Dear Athletes, Coaches, Families, Volunteers, and Friends:

Welcome to the 2019 Special Olympics Ohio State Basketball Tournament Finals and Basketball Individual Skills Contest!

This journey began more than a month ago on courts across the state with an original field of 157 teams. This weekend 34 teams are competing in semifinals and championship games for nine different divisions.

Another 285 athletes will continue to prepare for future team competition with drills in shooting, dribbling, and passing at the Individual Skills Contest.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the overwhelming support and help from ourwonderful fans and partners!

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Hilliard school district and community for providing top-notch competition venues.

To our coaches, volunteers, and families: it’s hard to put this much appreciation into words. Thank you so much for giving of your time, talents, and so much more to help these athletes truly realize their potential and dreams.

To every athlete participating this weekend: congratulations! Your hard work and determination have brought you to this point and, regardless of the outcomes of competition, you have achieved something important!

I am reminded of these lines from the poem ‘Thinking’ by Walter D. Wintle:

Each year Special Olympics Ohio recognizes a member of our organization to honor their passion and dedication for the sport of basketball.

For the 2019 State Basketball Tournament, we would like to recognize a very special athlete who displayed this same passion and dedication in everything that he did. This year we dedicate the State Basketball Tournament and its Opening Ceremonies to the memory of Michael Stanfield.

Michael was an active team member of the Cuyahoga MBB and Cuyahoga Strongsville programs. He played on Cuyahoga MBB Grinders Basketball team and he also participated in Track & Field and Bowling.

We lost Michael during this basketball season but we will always remember his kindness, dedication, and the passion he demonstrated both on and off the playing field.

Special Olympics Ohio is honored to dedicate the 2019 State Basketball Tournament to Michael Stanfield.
