Explore Uni Camp and Somerset Sports Cup Victory

Year 10 students with an

interest in University studies

attended an Explore Uni camp

last week. The camp is

tailored by QUT to deliver

students an enjoyable and

interactive opportunity to

explore their tertiary studies,

training and career options.

During the camp, students

visited QUT campuses, the

Tertiary Studies Expo (TSXPO)

and Brisbane North Institute

of TAFE. A variety of activities

were held on campus and

there were current students

on hand to assist them in

making decisions about their

post-school options. Our Year

11 and 12 students will have

an opportunity to participate

in a similar camp next term.

Congratulations to the 50 students who competed in the

Somerset Schools’ Sports Cup on Friday June 3. Our touch

and netball teams won both games making us the overall

winners, bringing the Cup home to Kilcoy.

The netball, touch and soccer

teams all played great games with outstanding displays of

From the Principal

We are approaching the busy

end to the semester with the beginning of the assessment

period.

Parents should see a lift in the amount school work being

done at home, finalising

assignments and preparing for examinations.

Our year 12 OP cohort have

again spent a day with Mighty Minds in preparation for the

multiple choice sections of the

Queensland Core Skills test.

This group were very focused during these sessions and I

am encouraged by their work ethic and dedication to the

task.

It was great to hear the news

that Kilcoy SHS has retained the Somerset Schools’ Cup

following the sports day last Friday. Our touch football and

netball teams bringing home

the win. My congratulations to all the students and staff

involved. There have been a number of other Kilcoy High

success stories over the past week or so.

We have had staff and students camping out for the

Maleny show, well done to Coen Fry who will now

compete in the finals of the cattle judging at the Brisbane

show.

We have also had staff and

students enjoying “Explore Uni” camp over the last

weekend. This event is hosted by the Queensland University

of Technology and hopes to inspire students to aspire to

tertiary study.

I received very good feedback

about the calibre of our students from this camp.

I was recently privileged to

conduct an observation in a

pre-service teacher’s class

and while I was encouraged

that the future of our

profession was in safe hands,

I was most impressed by the

work ethic, comradery and

conduct of our students.

In a very practical class with

a great diversity of students

from high academic achievers

to students with diverse

learning needs it was

wonderful to see all of the

students engaged in genuine

collaboration and creative

tasks.

In the team work and co-

operation I witness the true

spirit of KSHS students was

clearly evident.

Innovation Learning Centre News

Hola (that’s Hello in Spanish)

Well we have hit week 8

already! Our students have been very busy completing

assignments and working on projects, our Distance Ed.

Students have just completed

their term exams.

In our learning area the first digital media workshop was

held last Thursday during lunch and it was great to see

enthusiastic students ready to

learn.

They have already begun planning and thinking about a

variety of projects which we look forward to seeing.

The 3D printer is printing away and many students are

trying to guess what the item will be.

As it prints, it layers two dimensional images on top of

each other from the ground up, it is always fun to try to

guess what the 3D product will become as Mr Tucker

never lets on what he is creating.

This Thursday lunch in the Cultural Group gathering the

movie “Bran Nue Dae” will be playing so that will be

entertaining.

The craft trolley has been

regularly used particularly by some very creative year seven

students.

Chappy Kate came along last Thursday and shared some

origami skills with them which

they really enjoyed.

I now have a beautiful blue paper swan on show on my

desk to prove it.

A new project has begun in

our quiet room, gathering information from our school

community about interesting places overseas, within

Australia and our local area they have visited.

I am sure our map will be covered in markers by the end

of term.

Our school community is very

diverse in their experiences, and we are so lucky to be

surrounded by students and staff with such interesting

stories and knowledge about our local area and abroad.

All Welcome!

Indigenous Perspectives Camp

Last week a small group of

our Indigenous students attended the inaugural

Indigenous Perspectives camp which was held on 24th -26th

May.

Through th is journey,

students were introduced to the word ‘Gunundjin’, the

meaning and history of which holds a special place in the

heart’s of the Jinibarra people, the traditional custodians of

the lands around our school.

It is the traditional name for

the place where the Stanley and Brisbane Rivers meet

and was an extremely apt name for their group and

what it represented while on the three day camp.

This camp has allowed other indigenous students from

Lowood and Toogoolawah high schools to come together

as a group, much like Gunundjin.

Through this camp, students had a better understanding

and awareness of their identity, country, and culture.

They also learnt some great skills such as teamwork,

leadership and resilience.

The students had the pleasure

of meeting Uncle Ken and Uncle Noel both local tribal

elders who were incredibly generous in giving up some of

their time to pass along some words of wisdom and share

stories of the past with the next generation.

They also got to make a connection to the land by

travelling on canoes to the

sacred Bora grounds along the banks of Somerset Dam.

The students slept outside under the stars, shared

damper around the campfire and experienced some

cultural dances and songs with the community.

The students who attended the camp came away with a

much greater understanding of the history and traditions of

the people from this area and would like to thank Stanley

R i v e r s E n v i r o n m e n t a l Education Centre and the

Somerset Regional Council who facilitated this wonderful

experience.

Without their support and the

fantastic behaviour and open minds the participants

approached this camp with, much of the culture of the

Jinibarra people would remain unknown and slowly fade

away, which would be a great

shame.

It was by coming together and mixing with others in the

community and sharing a yarn that we became Gunundjin.

REMINDER—Cyber Safety Session 5pm 13 June

A number of Ag students

camped at the Maleny Show last weekend as part of an

extension to their Agricultural studies.

During the weekend, our stud

beef cattle were prepared by

the students for the event,

which involved washing, drying

and brushing the cattle to show standard for the led

events. The students also participated

in the junior handling and junior judging events, with

Coen Fry winning the Junior Judges competition.

Our Cyber Safety Information Session on Tuesday 13 June at

5pm is aimed to provide parents with the latest

information on cyber safety. Sgt Tanwan attended our

Pastoral care day on Tuesday to provide a short

p r e s e n t a t i o n o n t h e importance using digital

technology responsibly to our

students. Children today are proficient in technologies such

as mobile phones, email and the internet; however they

don’t always have the confidence or the knowledge

to deal with cyber bullying. All school parents are

encouraged to attend. No RSVP is required.

Another activity that is taking

place in the Innovation Learning Centre this term is

Chess Club.

The Chess competition is getting close to the end with

only two more weeks until the winner will be revealed.

Mr Kirby has acquired some impressive new chess sets so

our students are certainly enjoying and taking advantage

of their new resources.

We have many newcomers

who are interested in just sitting down and learning the

game as a challenge and for fun.

Holt Bolt Somerset School Sports Cup

It was wonderful to see the

community get behind our local chaplaincy group and

participate in the Holt Bolt last weekend. Two waves of

energetic thrill seekers converged on the oval to test

their skills on a range of inflatable and climbing

obstacles. Thank you to Chappy Kate for organising

this event as a way to bring the community together for

some fun, whilst raising funds for the chaplaincy group so

that they can continue to

provide a valuable service to the schools in our area.

On Friday 2 June, Kilcoy State High

School participated in the 2017 Somerset

School Sports Cup held at Toogoolawah

State High School. The students

participated in mixed touch football,

soccer and netball in a round-robin style

of competition against Lowood SHS and

Toogoolawah SHS. Both the junior and

senior netball teams won all games,

while the touch teams had some tough

matches against Toogoolawah and the

soccer teams tried very hard, even

scoring a few goals against their

opponents with some great saves as

well. But at the end of the day both

junior and senior netball and touch teams

came out on top of the points ladder.

This meant that the school was victorious

overall and retained the overall trophy

outright for another year.

Great work students, but this day would

have not been a success without the

amazing staff at all 3 schools and the

Somerset council for providing this

opportunity for our students. I would like

to particularly thank Mr Gledhill, Miss

Barry and Mr Clegg for giving up their

time to coach and ref our teams.
