State Nature Biosphere Reserve “TAIMYRSKY” http://taimyrsky.ru http://taimyr.info http://byrranga.ru
The reserve is located in the tundra
zone, its territory is represented by
mountain and lowland landscapes. It
also hosts unique areas of the world's
most northern forests - Ary-Mas and
Lukunsky.
Fauna of the reserve includes 25 species of mammals, 127 species of birds and 24 of
fish. Among them there are 26 rare and protected (Red Books of IUCN, Russia and
Krasnojarsky region).
Muskox, acclimated to the site
"Bikada" in 1974 is now widely
spread through the north of Taimyr.
Taimyr population of wild reindeer
is the largest in the world.
The Laptev Sea Atlantic subspecies of
walrus is included in the IUCN Red List
and Red Book if Russia. Since 2013,
reserve launched a long-term program
to study its population with the support
from WWF .
Red-breasted Goose is also included
in the list of rare and endangered
animals.
Research & monitoring In 2012, the research department of the reserve included 20 people, 7 of them with
a degree. Research on 14 scientific topics, including:
- Inventory and monitoring flora of the reserve and neighboring territories.
Flora of the reserve includes 484 species of vascular plants and 287 species of
mosses. Results of multi-year research are published in the monograph "Flora of
vascular plants of Taimyr and neighboring territories". Scientists of Reserve also participate in the
international program “Arctic Shorebird
Demographics Network”. There carry out
coordinated demographic studies of model species
of waders to determine the factors influencing
their numbers. Participation in the "Programme
for the collection of data on the conditions of the
arctic breeding birds", which aims to create an
information resource on Arctic biodiversity
(http://www.arcticbirds.net/) continues as well.
Project to
monitor waders
on the Taimyr
Peninsula.
- Inventory of reserve soil cover, moni-
toring of seasonal thawing and tem-
perature of the seasonal thawing layer.
- Landscape mapping of the territory and inventory of reserve ecosystems, carried out on
the basis of "Nature of Eastern Taimy" database and GIS "Eastern Taimyr“.
According to the research, 147
scientific papers were published in 2012
only. Total of more than 1,500
publication were created during the
whole history of the reserve, including
foreign publications. 5 "Transactions"
of the reserve were published, and also
series of monographs on the flora,
fauna and ethnography. The staff of the
scientific department created and
maintains websites "Taimyr Reserve",
"Flora of Taimyr" and WEB-GIS
"Taimyr Reserve”.
Reserve contribution to the
preservation of
biodiversity of the Arctic. Scientists of the reserve participated in the
design and organization of the territory of
traditional nature use "Popigay"which is a
regional level Protected Area. Reserve puts
forward proposals to expand the network of
protected areas north of the Krasnoyarsk
Territory. Reserve scientists collaborated in
the project to organize 2 regional wildlife
preserves. Scientists of the reserve
participated in UNDP project "Expert
assessment of landscape diversity and the
integrity of the landscape, the impact of
natural and anthropogenic factors on the
landscape, the preparation of proposals to
reduce the threat landscape diversity and
preserve the integrity of landscapes." The list
of rare and threatened plants of Taimyr is
included in the new edition of the Red Book
of the Krasnoyarsk Territory (Plants &
Mushrooms). Certain scientists of the reserve
are included in the group of CAFF experts to
develop a plan for pan-Arctic terrestrial
ecosystems monitoring.
Cooperation with local communities and
environmental education.
Museum of Nature and Ethnography is based at the reserve and successfully
develops. The staff of museum and of the department of environmental
education is formed exclusively of the members of the indigenous population
of Taimyr. The museum provides exhibits and photos telling about the
nature of the region, and keeps palaeontological and mineralogical
collections as well as extensive ethnographic collection - national costumes,
handicrafts.
Officers of the protection department,
in addition to protection of the cordon
territories, are involved in the
protection of tribal lands of the
indigenous population.
Reserve stuff members are actively
involved in the promotion and
implementation of national
holidays and regularly travel with
lectures and exhibitions to remote
communities.
Development of tourism. Remoteness and inaccessibility of the Taimyr
Reserve, as well as extreme weather conditions
hinder the development of mass tourism in the
region. However, the region is attractive for
birdwatching enthusiasts, for water and water-
hiking, tracking, skiing and mountain hikes.
