“My mother is in a wheelchair,” said Cynthia Thompson, 43. “So we just stood still, wecouldn’t move.”

Thompson’s father recently had a bone marrow transplant to treat his bone cancer, andhe wasn’t physically able to maneuver his way to safety either.

During the earthquake, Thompson didn’t want to leave her parents alone in the house —but she did send her 8-year-old daughter, Brooke, out the window.

“It was really scary,” Brooke said. “I thought I was going to die.” In front of them was adeflated air mattress, which some of them planned to sleep on outside that night.

The Thompson family suffered no major injuries, but they are scarred and overwhelmedby having to clean everything they had accumulated over the decades living together.

Others in the neighborhood were doing the same. Thompson and her father drove backto her house, along with Brooke, leaving the rest of their family back in the shade.

They wanted to take a look, once again, at the damage.

On the way, they ran into their neighbors — Susan Witcher and ten other familymembers were cleaning up their own house.

The Witcher family could not stay in their home. Their chimney had collapsed andfissures lined the walls and roof of their home.

They were scared their home could crash down at any moment — it was time to go.

“I have lived here for 35 years,” said Susan Witcher, 67, as she carried out boxes ofkitchenware to her truck. “And I just had to throw away 45 years’ worth of stuff. We don’tknow if we will ever be able to move back in.”

They family was headed to her father’s house for the time being.

Thompson chatted with the Witcher family, then made her way to her own house aroundthe corner. In her home, the TV lay face down on the floor, broken china glasses wereeasy to step on, and sinkholes had formed by the outside walls of the house.

“Currently, it looks like a tornado just hit,” Thompson said. Brooke pointed to theaperture through which she made her escape during the earthquake. “I had to jumpthrough the window,” she said, navigating through her toys and books strewn across thefloor.

    Thompson seemed exhausted.

She had been back and forth to Los Angeles to take her father to the hospital for the lastseveral weeks and had been hoping to get some rest before the earthquake hit.

“It’s just been a lot,” she said, locking up the door to her house.

A sleeping bag was laid out on the patchy grass. Bags of chips and candies surrounded abasket of green apples and fruit on a picnic table. The Byrds — mother Kay; father Fred;sisters Karen and Cynthia Thompson; and the latter’s daughter, Brooke — were trying tore-create a household after two major earthquakes. Across Trona, an unincorporated community on the edge of Death Valley longmythologized in California for its desolate location and tough character (the high schoolfootball team is one of the few, possibly the only, in the United States to play on an all-dirt field), residents are still cleaning up after the quakes.

And though it’s hard enough to live here even in the best of conditions, many Tronanssay they now face a reckoning about their future.

The twin temblors cracked the very foundations of the town. A chimney stack at theSearles Valley Minerals plant, long Trona’s economic lifeblood, partially toppled. Gravescaved in at the cemetery. The sign at the only park crumbled. At Esparza FamilyRestaurant, where locals gather at 5:30 in the morning every day, a massive fractureblights its outside mural.

Water is inaccessible. Electricity is spotty. Dozens of homes have broken walls, splitdriveways or interiors that look like one of the hard winds that regularly sweep throughtown blew right through them. As of Sunday afternoon, cars still needed escorts in andout of Trona on Highway 178 from Ridgecrest, about a half-hour drive away, because of aphalanx of construction crews placing new asphalt.

Even the sulfur stench that usually pervades the air in Trona is more noticeable by itsabsence. The Searles Valley Minerals plant is shut down.

“If they don’t get up the mine,” Kay said, “the town is finished.”

Trona sits at the edge of a dry lake from which various companies have extractedminerals such as borax and soda ash for over a century, and its neighborhoods areroughly planned around four plants, all connected by long, winding Trona Road.

In the 1950s, it had the makings of any respectable town: bowling alleys, a Fox movietheater, a hospital, a large pool. At its height, it had 6,000 people.

But Trona’s fortunes soured as the Navy expanded its China Lake station and nearbyRidgecrest grew. Mining jobs became scarcer; many residents grumble that the currentplant owners, Nirma Ltd., are based in India and don’t care about their well-being likeprevious bosses did.

Earthquake batters Trona: Rockslides cut off town; water is scarce »

The population has declined dramatically, along with the aesthetics; abandoned homeslitter the already parched landscape. On the way into town, someone spray-painted a signadvertising a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department substation with the face of apig.

“The town is not too good right now,” said 80-year-old Gail Austin, who has lived inTrona nearly his entire life and retired in 2000 as a Searles Valley Minerals plantmanager.

“There is a bit of a drug class,” admitted Larry Cox, pastor at First Baptist Church ofSearles Valley, which had to cancel its 65th anniversary celebration after the roof of itsfellowship hall caved in.

“It’s gone from being a great town where we had everything to one where we only haveourselves,” said Ralph “Zeb” Haleman, who was eight stories up at the main mineralsplant when the second quake hit.

People had tried to rally community spirit in recent years. The nonprofit Trona Care hasbought abandoned houses to tear them down. There were plans for a new park, redeveloped apartments. A Family Dollar opened in 2015.

It hasn’t been open since Thursday.

“My house is wrecked,” he said. “And I don’t know if we’re going to have a job onMonday.”

When the quake hit these Trona families, ‘everything came tumbling down’ »

“If there’s another big one, Trona will be gone,” said 76-year-old RoseAnn Austin, whohas lived here since 1963. Her main house didn’t see much damage. But a property acrossthe street saw its front fence completely ruined; cinder blocks were spilled across thesidewalk and covered a large pile of wood that the Austins had left for chipmunks to livein.

“Our chipmunks don’t know what to do,” Austin said. “They don’t know where to go. Ihope they have enough food stored away.”

Tommy Channell, originally from Victorville, has lived in Trona only since October butsaid he quickly found a community groove he had never previously experienced. After thesecond quake, he immediately got a crescent wrench and went around his neighborhoodvolunteering to shut off gas lines.

“I’m 40, but this is the first time I’ve found a real home,” he said. “It looks ugly from theoutside, but inside, it’s a lot of love.”

First Baptist Church served as a water station and had the men of its congregation gofrom home to home to check in on “widows and shut-ins,” Cox said. St. Madeleine SophieBarat Catholic Church, usually open only twice a month, planned to hear confessions.

Tips came fast: The Red Cross was going to have a bigger presence from now onafter a miscommunication the day before. Beware of price gouging in town. People fromaround the world want to donate money, so who can help set up a GoFundMe page?

Julia Doss, who runs a Trona Neighborhood Watch Facebook page, did most of thetalking. She said that 40 sack lunches someone had donated were “grabbed in no time,”and that what the town needed most besides water and ice were diapers, wipes andgallon-sized Ziploc bags.

Doss, who works at Searles Valley Minerals, noted that there were a lot of newcomers intown. “As a community, we’ve gotten used to keeping to our friends,” she said. “Now is atime to learn who [strangers] all are.”

Those present nodded. They were enthusiastic but tired. Seven aftershocks withmagnitudes of at least 3.0 had already struck Trona on Sunday morning.

TRONA, Calif. — In this tiny and isolated desert settlement with survival

tied to a potash mining company, an Americana spirit ashes in its people

despite the town’s severe socioeconomic struggles.

When Searles Valley Minerals conducted signicant layos in 1982, the self-

sucient community on the route to Death Valley National Park was

devastated and, over the next nearly four decades, reduced to a skeleton of

    its former self.

“It’s never been the same since then,” said resident Zana Eisenhour, whose

retired husband worked at the plant like many in Trona, an unincorporated

community about 25 miles northeast of Ridgecrest.

So after two major earthquakes struck nearby, residents here — upset with

early media coverage focused on Ridgecrest — wondered aloud whether

    they may again be forgotten.

“This is the rst time that we’ve been acknowledged at this magnitude,”

said Julia Doss, president of Trona Care, a local community group collecting

and assisting drop-os of food, water and necessity items on Sunday.

    Following Thursday’s 6.4-magnitude earthquake, Trona’s roughly 1,800

residents were left without power and water. It was momentarily restored.

Then a 7.1-magnitude temblor hit Friday night. Both quakes were felt in Las

Vegas, a nearly four-hour drive from Trona.

Since then emergency crews have been working on a x. By early afternoon

broken line carrying water from Ridgecrest to Trona along Highway 178 was

still causing headaches, and a boil-water order was in eect. A water station

manned by emergency response teams and National Guard members at

Trona High School oered temporary relief as ocials issued a high heat

    advisory.

Still, residents reported homes ooded by snapped water-heater supply

lines and chimneys that collapsed. Rooms are o-limits until a blockade of

tipped hutches and scattered household items are cleared. Without water for

swamp coolers — many cannot aord air conditioning — some camp

outside to escape nighttime heat and the persistent clutter.

“This is going to be a several-month endeavor,” Doss said, “I would

    suggest, at a minimum.”

But in the face of adversity, the community has rallied together, which

residents say is simply a reection of its closeness that goes overlooked by

most outsiders. San Bernardino County 1st District Supervisor Robert

Lovingood, whose district includes Trona, described the town as “really

Americana” with “an incredible sense of pride.”

“People know their neighbors,” he said. “It’s still where kids listen to

adults, and adults correct kids even if they’re not their own.”

Lovingood toured the damage Saturday amid a “very heavy response” from

local ocials. The response included Victor Valley Transit Authority busing

residents without transportation to the American Red Cross shelter in

    Ridgecrest.

He relayed that the entire valley had been cloaked in dust from boulders and

    dirt falling from mountains.

“It’s amazing that there wasn’t serious injury,” Lovingood said. “If that

would have been a major city, if that would have been Las Vegas — yeah.”

Long after parachuting journalists skip town and even as experts downgrade

the likelihood of a more serious earthquake soon rocking the region,

residents in Trona will have no choice but to contend with the aftermath.

“There’s enough damage to go around,” said Todd Owens, a lifelong

resident and member of the Christian Fellowship of Trona, where Trona

Care operated Sunday. People as far away as Las Vegas and Visalia had

    dropped o goods.

Eisenhour, 65, a member of the Trona Municipal Advisory Council, agreed

    with his sentiment.

“We’ve never had anything like this before,” she said.

Too much in her home was toppled over to be livable Sunday, so she and her

husband planned to spend another night in their RV parked in the front

yard. But she underscored that they did not face a lonely predicament.

“We’re not the only ones,” she said. “Everyone I’ve talked to is in the same

    boat.”

The earthquakes had knocked many of their household items to the oor. A

heap of nonperishable food was bundled in front of a larger-than-usual

pantry. It comes in handy since the nearest grocery store is in Ridgecrest.

Eisenhour planned to donate much of it.

“Anytime people are in need,” she said, “we take care of it.”

The town was temporarily cut off after the earthquake when officials shut down a highwayconnecting Trona to Ridgecrest because of rockslides and cracks in the roadway.

The hardscrabble town with 1,500 residents on the edge of a dry lake bed is considered thegateway to Death Valley.

Eugene Johnson was cleaning his home Saturday after the 7.1 magnitude earthquake broughtdown his brick chimney and fireplace.

The 61-year-old Trona resident told the AP that he and his wife were in bed watching TVFriday night when the quake started. They rushed into their living room to hold onto theirfish tank and big-screen TV and watched the fireplace collapse.

TRONA — Shawn Dodson was still in bed when his wife came in to tell him heneeded to get up.

She had just felt a fairly moderate earthquake — a magnitude 4.0, according toUnited States Geological Survey officials.

Then, just 30 minutes later, at 10:33 a.m., an even bigger quake hit.

Dodson said that when the shaking started, it was loud. He and his wife got outof the house.

“I never sat through an earthquake that big as long as I’ve lived here,” he said.

The magnitude-6.4 temblor that shook Southern California on IndependenceDay was the strongest one to strike the region in 20 years, USGS officials said.

Its epicenter was located in a remote area known as Searles Valley, whichincludes the unincorporated community of Trona, northeast of the Kern Countycity of Ridgecrest, which has a population of about 28,000.

Neighboring responding agencies answered the city’s request for help by sendingfire engines, urban search and rescue teams, K-9s and other resources. Gov.Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area.

The quake forced the evacuation of the local hospital, at least one house fire, water main breaks, gas leaks and at least two dozen fire and medical calls, swamping the dispatch centers there. Viral video footage showed a houseburning while a lone firefighter worked to put it out.

While most of the attention was focused on embattled Ridgecrest, the powerfultremor originated in San Bernardino County, just 6 miles west from whereDodson lives, and County officials had to spring into action to make sure theirown were taken care of as well.

Searles Valley, with a population of around 1,800, lies in a somewhat isolatedarea in the northwest corner of San Bernardino County. Trona is located about20 miles away from Ridgecrest, on State Route 178.

San Bernardino County Fire Department Captain Jeremy Kern said that after themain quake stopped shaking, an engine, ambulances, a chief officer and a heavyrescue truck from Hesperia were sent to the site. The heavy rescue is staffed withurban search and rescue firefighters.

USAR teams are specially trained to rescue people trapped in structures that havecollapsed and can assess “whether a building is habitable or needs to be red-tagged for non-occupancy,” Kern said.

They also carry equipment, such as a specialized camera that can locate potentialvictims.

Until responders arrived, community residents had to deal with the effects of thequake on their own.

Dodson said that he and six others immediately went to staff Trona’s fire stationafter the shaking “mellowed out.” He said he’s part of a team of 10 paid-callfirefighters who respond when emergencies arise.

Power was knocked out in the area so the crew started a generator. Dodson saidTrona was without electricity until about 9:30 Thursday night.

A cooling center and cell phone charging area was set up at Trona’s golf courseclubhouse, since it’s powered from a nearby raw materials processing plant,Searles Valley Minerals.

The plant was the cause of some concern by County Fire officials at first, Kernsaid, due to a potential hazardous materials incident. Searles Valley Mineralsprocesses materials such as borax and soda ash from minerals gathered from thenearby dry lakebed.

It also uses chemicals that if released in a damaging earthquake could be harmful,he said.

The safety systems in place for the chemicals worked, and plant safety officialscooperated with firefighters.

Dodson said he and other firefighters began to drive around in their apparatus toassess the damage. He reported a couple water main breaks, block walls that hadfallen over, and buildings with external cracks, including a local restaurant.

Water officials were also advising residents to use only boiled tap water orbottled water for drinking and cooking purposes, according to a statement fromFirst District Supervisor Robert Lovingood.

Dodson said this was likely due to a broken water line that feeds the area whichmay have become contaminated after the quake.

But despite minor damage and power loss, Dodson said he noticed people wereout in their yards barbecuing on the Fourth and in “pretty good spirits.”

In an area straddling the Kern County-San Bernardino County line, however, firefighters found heavier damage.

Known as Windy Acres, just east of Ridgecrest and south of SR 178, Kern saidthe area received “most of the impact from the earthquake.”

Crews discovered multiple trailers that had slipped off their foundations, fireplaces shifted away from buildings, rock slides and smaller residentialelectricity lines downed.

Firefighters could be heard doing an exhaustive block-by-block assessment of thedamage, per scanner traffic.

Ultimately, no injuries were reported in the county directly caused by seismicactivity itself, Kern said.

Officials still warn that a larger earthquake may be on the way.

She also predicted plenty of aftershocks. A magnitude-5.4 earthquake hit the areaat about 4:07 a.m. Friday morning.

A USGS map showed over 150 earthquakes since the 6.4 quake as of 6:00 p.m.

Hundreds of weary residents from Ridgecrest and surrounding communities packed a town hall meetingSunday afternoon to discuss top concerns — including mental health, building inspections and access tobasic services — in the aftermath of the area's two recent big earthquakes.

Officials from the Ridgecrest police and fire departments, the mayor’s office and others addressed thecommunity’s pressing needs after the 6.4- and 7.1-magnitude temblors that struck the region on July 4and a day later.

“Let’s try to start recovering now,” Ridgecrest Police Chief Jed McLaughlin told the crowd, which eruptedin applause.

Ridgecrest Regional Hospital is open again, McLaughlin said. He urged residents to start reentering theirhouses and asked them to recognize the emotional toll of the earthquakes.

“PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] is a real thing and we are all suffering it right now,” he said.

Officials reminded residents to keep using boiled water if they couldn’t access bottled water, out ofconcerns that the quakes cracked water mains, creating a risk of contamination.

The gas in some buildings — particularly in mobile home communities — is still not working, residentstold leaders. Gas operations officials said they would send teams to fix utilities upon request.

Two women asked how residents with disabilities could access relief services given the lack oftransportation in the area.

“I’ll take you in my car,” McLaughlin told Teresa O’Malley, a resident who has a broken back and can’ttravel far. The police chief offered the same help to anyone else who needed it.

Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden asked residents to keep checking on their friends, family and neighbors.

“I know we have heroes in this community,” she said.

Earlier in the day, a trio of researchers assessed the damage of buildings in nearby Trona. It was hard forthem to tell which were battered by the earthquakes that pummeled this San Bernardino County town inrecent days — and which were simply old and abandoned.

“Some of this damage was already here,” said Kenneth O’Dell, 55, a structural engineer.

But he nonetheless noted that the earthquake had hit Trona hard, particularly because the walls of mostbuildings were not reinforced with steel or other material that can keep them upright, or prevent crackingduring severe tremors.

    https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-earthquake-trona-ridgecrest-engineers-20190707-story.html[7/8/2019 7:50:35 AM]

“It looks like most of these structures were built during the 1930s and 1940s,” O’Dell said. “So it makessense that they weren’t ready for this kind of shaking.”

O’Dell had arrived from Los Angeles on Saturday with engineer Martin Hudson and his 25-year-old son, geologist Kenneth Hudson, to assess earthquake damage in Trona and nearby Ridgecrest after massivequakes rocked the region.

Their goal was to study the structural damage of the buildings in Trona so they could understand howexactly the earthquakes affected those structures and surrounding areas. These findings, they hoped, couldsomeday be published in a research paper and help guide future geologists and engineers.

They stopped Saturday afternoon on California 178 between Trona and Ridgecrest, where the elderHudson stood on one of the fault ruptures caused by Friday’s magnitude 7.1 quake.

“It’s moved everything three feet to the right,” said Hudson, 52, an engineer who forms part of theEarthquake Engineering Research Institute, an organization based in Oakland that brought researcherstogether in the Ridgecrest area to study the effects of the earthquakes.

After assessing the fault rupture, the three researchers hopped in their car and headed to Trona, aboutthirty miles northeast of Ridgecrest. At the side of a faded pink house at the community’s entrance, theresearchers noted that soil liquefaction had caused portions of the ground to crack and collapse — some ofthe soil had started turning into a liquid state, the researchers explained. Nearby, a chimney had caved inon one of the houses.

“We saw a lot of this type of damage in the ‘94 Northridge earthquake,” O’Dell said.

In the end, the three anticipate that their research could help prevent future building damage duringearthquakes.

“The goal of our research is to improve the designs of these structures so that they are not as susceptible, and we’re hoping that our work today can contribute to that,” Kenneth Hudson said.

More than 45 researchers, including engineers, geologists and others, met Saturday night in Ridgecrest todiscuss findings from the weekend, according to the California Geological Survey. At least four moreresearchers arrived Sunday to study the grounds near Ridgecrest and Trona, said Cynthia Pridmore, chairof CGS’ California Earthquake Clearinghouse.

Geologist teams from USGS and CGS have been invited over the last three days to survey the Naval AirWeapons Station China Lake in Ridgecrest, near the epicenter. Pridmore said that one of their goals is tomap out the length of the surface rupture from Friday’s quake.

In Ridgecrest and surrounding areas, the tremors have subsided, and officials don’t expect any of theupcoming aftershocks to cause serious damage.

“The dangerous side of the hazard is tapering off,” Pridmore said.

On Saturday, USGS calculated a 27% probability the region will be hit by a magnitude 6 or greater quakein the coming days, Caltech seismologist Egill Hauksson said. The probability that another earthquake will

strike with a magnitude 6 or higher is dropping by the minute, he said.

As scientists try to glean lessons in the quakes’ aftermath, residents are still sorting through the damage.

In Trona, a family of five sought shelter from the scorching sun on Saturday afternoon under the shade ofa tree. In front of them was a deflated air mattress, which some of them planned to sleep on outside thatnight.

None of them were injured in the quake, but they felt overwhelmed by the work ahead, cleaning upeverything they had accumulated over the decades. Cynthia Thompson and her father decided to driveback to their house, along with her 8-year-old daughter, Brooke, to take another look at the damage.

On the way, they ran into their neighbor Susan Witcher, who was cleaning up her home, along with familymembers, before heading to stay with her father. Their home’s chimney had collapsed and fissures linedthe walls and roof.

“I have lived here for 35 years,” said Witcher, 67, as she carried out boxes of kitchenware to her truck.“And I just had to throw away 45 years’ worth of stuff. We don’t know if we will ever be able to move backin.”

Although the home did not seem to have suffered severestructural damage, it was impossible to walk through hallways, and rooms were blocked by belongings.Sinkholes had formed near the exterior walls.

After two major earthquakes in as many days, the communities ofRidgecrest in Kern County and Trona in San Bernardino County arecoping with the aftermath.

During a Saturday morning, July 6, news conference, public officialsaddressed the need for support. Right now, following emergencydeclarations and recovery efforts underway in San Bernardino and KernCounty, monetary support is what’s most needed, they said.

Ridgecrest police Chief Jed McLaughlin said Saturday morning, July 6, during a newsconference in Ridgecrest, that there have been no fatalities due to the two major quakes thatstruck near the Kern County city in the past two days. (Photo by Brian Rokos/The Sun/SCNG)

Please do not bring supplies, they said, that would require handling byworkers needed elsewhere.

    Here’s how you can help:

    • Monetary donations are necessary at this time, officials said during thenews conference. “Cash donations really are the best right now” so theycan be distributed as needed, Mimi Teller of the Red Cross said duringthe news conference. The link is available at Redcross.org/donate.

SoCal Residents Recover From 2 Major Quakes as ScientistsWarn of the ‘Big One’POSTED 6:54 AM, JULY 7, 2019, BY ASSOCIATED PRESS, MEGAN TELLES, ERIN MYERS, STEVE KUZJ AND CARLOS SAUCEDO,UPDATED AT 11:17PM, JULY 7, 2019

Shaken residents were cleaning up Sunday from two of the biggest earthquakes to rattle California indecades as scientists warn that both should serve as a wake-up call to be ready when the long-dreaded "BigOne" strikes.

California is spending more than $16 million to install thousands of quake-detecting sensors statewide thatofcials say will give utilities and trains precious seconds to shut down before the shaking starts.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said it's time residents did their part by mapping out emergency escape routes andpreparing earthquake kits with food, water, lights and other necessities.

"It is a wake-up call for the rest of the state and other parts of the nation, frankly," Newsom said at aSaturday news conference on efforts to help a desert region jolted by back-to-back quakes.
