ANNUAL REPORT 2009

STATE OF THE ART CENTERBy Jules Masterjohn

Change and continuity. These are inevitable aspects of life. During 2009 the Rogue Gallery & Art Center experienced both. Change occurred in the economic picture of the organization with the near depletion of financial reserves that had been in place over the last many years. Continuity was provided by those who value this organization and the arts – an indefatigable Board of Directors, a professional staff, many dedicated volunteers, over 500 loyal members, and numerous generous donors. Due to this commitment, today our community art center is going strong and working to rebuild its reserves.

So far in 2010 our volunteer and membership base has increased and business support has grown. Our annual fundraising auction netted healthy proceeds. We are encouraged by this positive trend and welcome new business support from Anna Maria Creekside, CDS Publications, Horton Properties, Mountain Meadows & Skylark Assisted Living, Segway of Jacksonville, and Southern Oregon Sogetsu Ikebana Study Group. We also received grant funding from the Carpenter Foundation and Coquille Tribal Community Fund.

Relationships are critical to thriving as a community resource. In 2010, we were a site host for the Oregon Nonprofit Leaders Conference, and held receptions in the gallery for the Medford-Alba Sister City Association, and for Oregon’s newest Poet Laureate.

The Rogue Gallery & Art Center is an invaluable asset that provides opportunities for all citizens of all ages regardless of economic ability to enter the stimulating, interesting, and enlightening world of visual art. Our promise to regional artists stays strong through numerous exhibitions such as the Members’ Gallery, the Art in Bloom Invitational, and the new Rogue Valley Biennial. By increasing our public programs like the Meet the Artist Soirees and Docent Tours of exhibitions, we have stepped up our pledge to lead the community towards greater appreciation of art and understanding of the creative process. To meet this goal, in 2010, presentations were given by Mali-born artist and author Baba Wague Diakité, by internationally known printmaker Dan Welden, and by Los Angeles-based artist and art professor Raoul De la Sota, who offered a lecture in conjunction with the exhibition Viva la Vida: Synthesis of Cultures.

Art can help bring continuity to an ever-changing changing world. So take a class, visit an exhibition, attend an event, and volunteer time. Use us, depend upon us, and continue to support us. Our mission is to serve you, the community, through inspiring and informative visual art experiences. Hold us to task. Make us better through your contribution of ideas, time, and resources.

The RGAC education program targets both professional artists and new and younger students with classes and workshops in traditional and cutting edge art techniques. The Artist Teen Mentoring Project serves teen art students through workshops, studio sessions, and mentoring by professional artists. Children’s art classes and camps provide discipline-based study that fills a gap left vacant in public education in recent years. From open studios to intensivee topical workshops, adults can discover their creative selves, develop perspective, or learn new techniques. Grant funding and our scholarship fund make it possible for those who need financial assistance to attend quality art classes.

EDUCATION

RGAC advocates for art opportunities and events in the community at large, often helping to launch art programs that continue under the leadership and management of other organizations. The community is exposed to high quality and diverse art forms through the availability of the gallery for use as a meeting and reception venue. We provide further presence for the visual arts throughout the community by sponsoring exhibitions at satellite venues in collaboration with other organizations in the downtown arts and culture district, including the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater and the Medford Public Library. In addition we participate in community events such as the Art in Bloom Festival, the Taste of History, and Third Friday Art Walk.

EXHIBITIONS

ADVOCACY

RGAC is known regionally for presenting high quality art exhibitions annually. Each year’s exhibition series features established regional artists as well as those emerging in their careers. Exhibitions of cultural and social relevance and those spotlighting a specific medium or an artistic process are regularly scheduled as part of the organization’s interest in diversity. RGAC strives to help artists reach their potential by offering opportunities to exhibit and sell, meet the public to talk about their work, and build resumes through participation with a well established and respected arts organization. Public programs accompany the exhibitions in various forms: docent tours, lectures, and demonstrations offer informative and educational components within which to better understand and appreciate art techniques, styles, and the societal importance of art.
