Welcome to

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

It is with an enormous sense of pride that I welcome you to Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy as Executive Principal. We are a values-driven Academy with an unshakeable belief in human potential and are proud of all our students, in particular, the young men and women in the Sixth Form who as Academy student leaders, are role models for our younger year groups. We have the highest expectations of them in terms of academic achievement, personal development, attitude, conduct, attendance and appearance.

Our Sixth Form Centre, Arden, is highly successful, offering an extensive range of A Level and vocational courses. This, combined with extracurricular activities and personal development programmes, help enhance applications to universities, apprenticeships and future employers. We ensure that all our students receive specialist support in terms of careers, future training and informed university choices, including a substantial guidance programme for UCAS applications, 1:1 mentoring from business leaders, and

work-experience placements. When students leave us they are fully equipped to lead successful adult lives and are able to embrace the challenges of higher education, with many gaining places at Russell Group universities, securing apprenticeships or employment.

It is an immense privilege to lead such a highly skilled and dedicated team of staff, all of whom are focussed on students’ academic progress, character development, happiness and well-being. We know that young people face many choices and anxieties in their teenage years and their tutors and pastoral staff are a reassuring and constant presence in our young people’s lives and help them make the right choices, discover who they are and what they want to be.

As a Stationers’ school and part of a multi-academy trust, students have access to an incredible range of opportunities in education, industry and commerce. The commitment of the Governors and Trust members is outstanding. They

work tirelessly to provide advice, financial support, work experience, mentoring, apprenticeships and enrichment opportunities. ‘Stationers’ students’ are highly regarded by further education institutions and employers.

Please do visit us on one of our open evenings and take the opportunity to meet staff and talk to our young men and women. We very much look forward to welcoming you.

David Millar, Executive Principal

Welcome from the Head of Arden Sixth Form

We recognise that the choice of Sixth Form is a big decision in young people’s lives. Where they decide to study for the next two years will, to some extent, determine their university applications and indeed their future career decisions. It is important to us that parents are involved in this decision making process particularly given the nature of today’s competitive global market.

We encourage you to visit us on one of our open evenings to find out more about our community, our academic and vocational courses and our state of the art facilities. Here you will have the opportunity to ask questions of both the staff and student body and, in collaboration with parents and carers, help guide you onto the most appropriate courses. Following a successful application we will also invite prospective students and their parents/carers to attend an interview where you will be able to ask further questions.

Arden has a proven track record of guiding our Sixth Formers into their preferred futures. Whilst the vast majority seek to move onto university and are successful in doing so, a growing minority are moving directly into higher apprenticeships. The breadth and depth of our academic and extra curricular provision ensures that they are ready for whichever pathway they choose.

Time after time Arden produces well rounded, independent young adults ready to make their way in the world. We look forward to meeting you to discuss how we can do the same for you.

Norman Doyle, Head of Sixth Form

Academy Performance

In 2016 we celebrated our best ever set of academic and vocational results with an overall A*- C rate of 70% in A Level courses and 98% A*- C in vocational courses.

Our higher ability pupils excelled in 2016. These students, who had an overall GCSE points score equivalent to a high B grade, secured an A*- B rate of 93% in A Level courses.

Even more impressive was the value added performance within Arden. According to the Alps measure of student progress - used by the majority of Post 16 providers - Arden was in the TOP 20% nationwide in 2016 for both A Level and vocational courses.

For more details on our 2016 and 2017 outcomes please see the Arden Sixth Form pages on our website: www.scwa.org.uk

‘My time at Arden has been extremely successful, interesting and eye opening. Not only do the teachers do their best to get your academic work to the highest standard, they also ensure that your emotional well being is as good as possible. With all of this care and attention, I move onto the next stage in my life a much improved and well rounded human being.‘Daniel, Sixth Form Ambassador

“In the sixth form in 2016, students made strong progress across the range of academic courses” Ofsted, July 2017

Arden Post-16 Centre

The Arden Sixth Form Centre provides a base for subject specialists to deliver lessons in small group tutoring, with three lecture theatres for presentations. Students access specialist teaching rooms in other areas of the Academy. These include science laboratories, music suites and practice rooms, drama and dance studios, our Digital Media Centre, technology rooms and extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities. There is a fully stocked library for research along with independent supervised study facilities for up to 150 students with a new learning centre planned for September 2018. We have extensive, landscaped grounds with a nature reserve and Sixth Form students have their own dining room in our restaurant to relax and enjoy breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks.

‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) scheme:

Launched in 2017, our BOYD scheme ensures that all P16 students can develop digital learning skills. Students are able to lease purchase their own device from a specialist range including: Windows laptop, Macbook Pro, iPad or Chromebook. The variety of devices available reflects the range of courses offered in Arden providing our students with the best digital device for their needs. Please note that there is no expectation for all students to participate in the scheme.

Stationers’ Digital Media Centre

A £500,000 refurbishment and investment project has transformed two classrooms in the William Morris building into a multi-media digital centre to rival any newsroom, magazine or silicon roundabout design company. The industry standard equipment and contemporary furniture gives the Centre a very professional feel, providing students with the opportunity to learn in a realistic work related environment. The project is the culmination of two years’ collaboration and has only been made possible by the generosity of sponsorship and donations from The Stationers’ Company.

The Centre is resourced to enable students from across all age and ability ranges to produce their own online media content, printed newspapers and magazines. Officially opened in May 2017, the Stationers’ Digital Media Centre has generated a large amount of excitement across the Academy. Students are working on exciting projects, for example, how to become responsible Digital Citizens; identifying ‘fake news’; and, working in collaboration with Ravensbourne University, to create SCWA’s own Digital Citizenship App!

How to choose courses

Choosing the right courses can be daunting. The decisions you make now will impact on what degrees you can read and which Universities will make you offers. Below is our guidance on making good decisions that will ensure your future progression.

1. Choose a subject YOU enjoy and are enthusiastic about, not one someone else wants you to choose. You are more likely to succeed.

2. If you know what degree or career you’d like to pursue, find out if specific A Levels are required. For example, to become a doctor you will need to study Chemistry and Biology whilst if you wish to become an Architect you will need to study Maths, Physics or Chemistry along with a visual arts A Level. Please note, Lawyers and Accountants do not need to study law or accountancy at A Level though you may wish to in order to get a sense of whether you really wish to pursue the career.

3. You have the opportunity to study new subjects such as Sociology, Psychology and Government and Politics. They are great subjects and particularly well taught in Arden, but do some research about the courses and make sure they are really for you, rather than choosing them simply because they are new.

4. BTECs are a great option, particularly if you prefer coursework over exams as a least 50% of all BTECs are assessed through coursework. There is however always at least one exam which must be passed in order to gain a Level 3 qualification.

‘Work consistently throughout your time here because that will be most beneficial in the long

term. Keep up with homework and try to do exam practise as much as possible.‘

Ayse‘Technology matters! Understand how it will impact your lives‘Amali de Alwis, CEO, Code First:Girls

How many subjects can I study?

We offer a very broad Level 3 curriculum which is reviewed every year in order to ensure we meet the needs of our community. With the recent reform of A Levels we intend to enrol students onto 3 A Level courses (4 for students with an average Grade 8 or higher) or vocational subjects of equivalent size.

Entry requirements

Whilst we understand that applicants may have a strong desire to study a particular subject we have devised entry requirements based on national success rates in Level 3 qualifications. This is to ensure that students enrol on courses they are most likely to succeed in and that will provide them with a pathway into Higher Education or Higher Apprenticeships.

Along with the general entry requirements, individual subjects have specific requirements that represent the demands of each subject. Please see our website for entry details.

Academic study programmes

The general entry requirements for an A Level study programme is an average GCSE points score of 5 or more obtained from 5 or more GCSEs including Mathematics and English Language. For non-reformed GCSEs please use the following scale to calculate your average points score: A*= 8, A = 7, B = 6, C = 4, D = 3.

Vocational study programmes

The general entry requirement for a vocational study programme is an average GCSE points score of 4.5 or more obtained from 5 or more GCSEs including Mathematics and English Language. We recognise Level 2 BTEC qualifications when considering applications to vocational courses using the following scale: Distinction* = 7, Distinction = 6, Merit = 4.5, Pass = 3.5.

‘I really enjoy the lessons and the chemistry with my teachers. They encourage me to study hard and perform at my best’ Ayse

‘The freedom and responsibility you gain and the respect is good, as you have to be much more independent’ Jay

Arden also arranged after-school revision sessions during the exam period which I found very useful and it made a significant impact on my results….. I would like to especially say thank you to the EAL department because they gave me huge help throughout my two years in Arden.’

Enrichment and Extra-curricular Opportunities

We run a full programme of enrichment opportunities, not only to enhance learning, but also to enable students to pursue deeper learning in areas they are passionate about, to develop particular skills and interests, develop independence and to enjoy new and exciting opportunities and experiences.

In line with Universities we devote Wednesday afternoons to our extra-curricular programme. Students can participate in a number of organised activities including the SILVER and GOLD Duke of Edinburgh award programmes, Film Club, Debating Society and, new for September 2017, the Academy will have its own on-site Combined Cadet Force unit in conjunction with the Royal Marines.

We encourage Sixth Formers to be independent in their pursuit of deeper learning by facilitating them in setting up their own clubs and societies in whatever area they are interested in. It is through this process that the all important soft skills of leadership and organisation are learnt and developed.

Sixth Formers studying the creative and visual Arts are encouraged to use Wednesday afternoons to make regular visits to museums, exhibitions, theatre and musical performances in order to build upon their theoretical and practical understanding of their subjects.

We continue to encourage competitive sport within Arden. Our dedicated PE department are happy to organise fixtures in all sports where students can muster a full team. This varies from year to year. We currently have successful football, basketball and badminton teams.

Volunteering

We believe that students should develop an understanding of their community and how they can contribute to it. To this end we have a large and successful peer mentoring programme within the Academy with over 50 Arden students providing academic and pastoral mentoring for lower school students. Mentors are trained and supported throughout the process enabling them to make a very real impact on the lives of those they mentor. We also support students in finding volunteering opportunities outside the Academy in a wide range of roles.

Dress code

Arden students are proud to wear business attire which reflects the purposeful and studious ethos of the sixth form. Details of the dress code can be found on our website.

‘I ‘ve been really happy at the Academy and made some great friends. The teachers have encouraged me all the way and I’m excited for my future at Uni.‘Jess, Sixth Form Student President

‘Take advantage of all opportunities given to you and ensure you work hard from the start.‘ Simba

Special Educational Needs and Disability Support

Students across all schools are supported by a team of staff including support for students with learning difficulties or physical disabilities. Interventions and support are tailored to individual needs and progress is closely tracked and monitored. We pride ourselves on developing successful partnerships between home and the Academy in order for every SEND student to achieve their potential.

Student Leadership & Student Voice

We expect our learners to be active participants and leaders in their own right. We have several opportunities for you to voice your opinions and to make a difference. There is an Arden Council led by the Sixth Form President and Vice-President.

Within the Council all tutor groups are represented and we have responsibility posts for a Treasurer, Secretary and Events Secretary. Our Council members are trained in public speaking and leadership skills to ensure they are effective in what they set out to achieve. The Sixth Form Council also provide leaders for the 11-16 small school’s councils. They offer advice and guidance to the younger years in how to run effective councils and make an impact.

New for 2017 we are launching a student led Multimedia and Marketing committee to capture the student voice and project this to the wider community on a range of platforms.

Throughout the year we encourage Sixth Formers to lead assemblies both in Arden and the 11-16 schools within the Academy as well as the opportunity to be peer mentors. Our multimedia marketing committee and a large number of Sixth Form Ambassadors take part in various public events.

Careers and Work Experience

At Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy we prioritise the future of our young people. Students are supported to make successful transitions when they leave the Academy whether into jobs, apprenticeships or university. We have a specialist Adviser who works with Sixth Form students and supports our work experience programme at the end of the summer term in Year 12.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust all of the academies are committed to the Investor in Careers Award and Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy is justifiably proud of having achieved the full award in 2014.Our links with the Trust and the Stationers’ Company provide a wealth of career development opportunities. Our students have access to mentoring schemes; business speakers; career talks; workplace visits; careers fairs and networking events; online resources; and open days at higher education institutions.

The Application Process

The deadline for completed applications is 31st January 2018. You will normally be called to interview within three working weeks of receipt of your application. Parents/Carers are welcome to attend interviews but are not required to do so. The Sixth Form interview is an opportunity for students (and parents or carers) to discuss the courses available and negotiate a suitable programme of study. The interview normally lasts between 15 and 20 minutes and will be conducted by the Head of Arden or a member of the Senior Team.

Successful applicants will receive an offer, conditional upon examination results and subject to references within three weeks of their interview. Students will be asked to confirm acceptance within two weeks of receipt of the offer.

Applications received after the 31st January deadline will be processed but students will be placed on the waiting list where courses are oversubscribed.

Application forms can be downloaded from www.scwa.org.uk - follow the link to Arden.

Selection Criteria

We are a comprehensive Sixth Form and as such we will make offers to students across a range of academic abilities. All decisions regarding offers are based upon the following criteria: 1 The likelihood of a student achieving the general entry

requirements and specific subject requirements for each course.

2 A satisfactory reference from the applicant’s current school/ college.

Enrolment will take place on the 23rd and 24th August 2018.

Applicants holding offers who are out of the country on our enrolment days will be able to make alternative arrangements via email.

Stationers’ Company

The Academy is sponsored by a City Livery company, The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers and our partnership brings huge benefits and enriches the education of our students.

Stationers volunteer their time to provide governance, resources, professional expertise, mentor students, give careers advice and work experience placements. The Company also provides money to support courses that lead to careers in related industries and gives extra opportunity to all students whatever their financial background. By supporting education that specialises in digital media, the Company aims to promote responsible digital citizenship, widen access to knowledge and maximise job opportunities.

The Stationers’ Company has been involved with education since 1557, initially in the management of apprenticeships for its trades but in 1861 it opened the Stationers’ School just off Fleet Street and later moved to Hornsey. This was closed in 1984 but in September 2014 a partnership was formed with Crown Woods College, now Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy.
