It is with an enormous sense of pride that I welcome you to Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy as Executive Principal. We are a values-driven Academy with an unshakeable belief in human potential and are proud of all our students. We have the highest expectations of them in terms of academic achievement, personal development, attitude, behaviour, attendance and appearance. Staff are committed to students being stretched, challenged and supported in their studies so that they can reach their full potential and learn essential life skills to help them succeed in an ever-changing world.

Our curriculum offer is diverse, innovative and inclusive with a rich variety of subjects to allow students to aspire, strive and thrive. Lessons, delivered in world-class learning facilities, are stimulating and challenging, meeting the needs of all our students. It instills value not only in the core subjects but also the EBACC and foundation subjects in all key stages.

It is an immense privilege to lead such a highly skilled and dedicated team of staff, all of whom are focussed on students’ academic progress, character development, happiness and well-being. Young people face many choices in their teenage years and our small school organisation enables us to provide outstanding pastoral support. Staff are a reassuring and constant presence in our young people’s lives and help them discover who they are and what they want to be.

As a Stationers’ school and part of a multi-academy trust, students have an incredible range of opportunities in education, industry and commerce. The commitment of the Governors and Trust members is outstanding. They work tirelessly to provide advice, financial support, work experience, mentoring, apprenticeships and enrichment opportunities. ‘Stationers’ students’ are highly regarded by further education institutions and employers.

Academy Performance

Our academic results show continual and sustained growth at both Post 16 and GCSE. In 2016, 70% of Year 11 students achieved A*- C in Maths and English, which far exceeds the national average and is the third consecutive year of improvement. Our relentless pursuit of excellence means that parental confidence in the Academy is at an all time high, attracting over 1400 applications for 270 places in Year 7 in 2017.

Academy Organisation

The Academy campus is large but our ‘small school, human scale’ approach ensures that every student is known, understood and valued as an individual. Students are allocated to one of three 11-16 schools: Ashdown, Delamere or Sherwood, based on their aptitude, ability, skills and interests. Each small school has 450 students, its own Head and Deputy Head of School and a dedicated team of teaching and pastoral staff including a School Support Officer. Academically gifted students are stretched through an accelerated curriculum within their small school. Every student is set challenging targets and the Academy groups in all subjects by ability.

Students are placed in Tutor groups where strong relationships are formed as they meet every day during ‘well being’ time. Topics such as health, well being, personal care, learning and thinking skills are discussed, with weekly whole school assemblies and celebration events held in the main hall.

Facilities

Key Stage 3 students are taught all core subjects in their ‘home school’ but also access specialist teaching rooms in other areas of the Academy. Creative arts, design technology and digital learning are delivered in the William Morris building, Music in the Symphony Centre, Drama in the Crown building, and our PE/Sports facilities are based in the 2012 Centre.

Specialist teaching areas include science laboratories, music suites and practice rooms, drama and dance studios, technology rooms and extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Each small school has its own lecture theatre and our fully stocked library in the Crown Building is open to students during breaks and after school for private study or reading for pleasure. We have extensive, landscaped grounds with a nature reserve and large restaurant where students can enjoy breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks.

The Curriculum

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8) students study the core subjects: English, mathematics and science, alongside history, geography, modern foreign languages, ICT, art, design technology, dance, drama, music, PE, RE with weekly sessions in PSHE and careers. In the latter half of Year 8, students receive advice on making choices within guided pathways to select their GCSE and/or vocational subjects.

Our three year Key Stage 4 (Years 9 - 11) pathways, tailored to each individual student’s needs, enables students to study at a pace suited to their learning styles: accelerated learning, in-depth research projects or additional support for those who require longer. All students continue to study English Language, English Literature, mathematics, science, PE

and RE and then select from a wide range of GCSE and vocational subjects including photography, media, computer science, health and social care.

The majority of students remain at the Academy for their Post 16 education and our Sixth Form Centre, Arden, is highly successful, offering an extensive range of A Level and vocational courses. This, combined with extracurricular activities and personal development programmes, helps enhance applications to universities and future employers.

We ensure that all our students receive specialist support in terms of careers, future training and informed university choices, including a substantial guidance programme for

UCAS applications, 1:1 mentoring from business leaders and work-experience placements. When students leave us they are fully equipped to embrace the challenges of higher education, with many gaining places at Russell Group universities, securing apprenticeships or employment.

Stationers’ Digital Media Centre

A £500,000 refurbishment and investment project has transformed two classrooms in the William Morris building into a multi-media digital centre to rival any newsroom, magazine or Tech City design company. The industry standard equipment and contemporary furniture gives the Centre a very professional feel, providing students with the opportunity to learn in a realistic, work related environment. The project is the culmination of two years’ collaboration and has only been made possible by the generosity of sponsorship and donations from The Stationers’ Company.

The Centre is resourced to enable students from across all age and ability ranges to produce their own online media content, printed newspapers and magazines. Officially opened in May 2017, the Stationers’ Digital Media Centre has generated a large amount of excitement across the Academy. Students are working on exciting projects, for example, how to become responsible Digital Citizens; identifying ‘fake news’; and, working in collaboration with Ravensbourne University, to create SCWA’s own Digital Citizenship App!

Digital Learning

The Academy vision to transform lives and enable every member of the SCWA family to thrive in an ever-changing world is embodied in our commitment to develop powerful digital citizens of the future. With the highest expectations and aspirations, inspiring innovation, creativity, and a lasting love of learning, we create opportunities for digital skills to be developed through every learning experience across our curriculum.

We recognise that the development of independent learning habits is critical to student success and that by having access to digital technology students can use the varied learning tools and online resources available to help them realise their full potential.

Our ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) scheme, launched in 2017, ensures that all students can develop digital learning skills. Currently available to Key Stage 4 & 5, students are able to lease purchase their own Chromebook to support their learning; this scheme will be rolled out across the Academy during 2017/18 academic year.


Rewards and Praise

Our rewards system recognises and rewards student achievements and encourages students to exceed their targets. Successes are celebrated in weekly and end of term assemblies as well as via our newsletters, social media, and through displays around the Academy. Our inclusive ethos recognises achievements in all areas: academic, vocational, sporting, enrichment and charitable or community service.

Uniform

At Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy, we believe that high expectations around uniform and appearance form the basis for students to show pride in their learning, in their Academy and in themselves. Consequently, students strive to achieve the highest standards academically, thus securing the best life chances.

To encourage a sense of ‘family’ and belonging, the uniform is differentiated with colours of the crown badge, tie and blouse denoting which ‘small school’ students belong: Ashdown: Red; Delamere: Purple; Sherwood: Blue.

Arden students are proud to wear business attire which reflects the purposeful and studious ethos of the sixth form.

Enrichment and Extra-curricular Opportunities

We run a full programme of enrichment opportunities, not only to enhance learning, but also to enable students to pursue deeper learning in areas they are passionate about, to develop particular skills and interests, and to enjoy new and exciting opportunities and experiences.

The Arts are extremely popular with regular visits to museums, exhibitions, theatre and musical performances. Weekly clubs including art, drama, dance, music, photography, debating, etc are organised, with opportunities for students to showcase their talents in annual productions and performances.

Competitive sport is encouraged with teams in all year groups for football, basketball, rugby, netball and cricket. Students are also able to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and, new for September 2017, the Academy will have its own on-site Combined Cadet Force unit in conjunction with the Royal Marines.


Homework

We aim to foster a culture where students and parents value homework and understand its contribution to students’ success. In Year 7 students are expected to complete 1 hour of homework per day. Assignments and resources are uploaded online via Show My Homework. Parents, carers and students are able to see at a glance all homework set and the completion deadline. This system encourages independent learning and helps students’ organisation and time-management skills - essential qualities needed for successful futures.

Reports, Assessment and Monitoring

Our termly schedule of assessment, ensures that student progress is regularly monitored and reviewed. Additional support and intervention can be swiftly put in place if necessary with extension work provided for those who have made exceptional progress. Parents receive a report on their child’s progress three times a year.

Transition

We understand that the transition from primary to secondary school is important in the lives of children and their families. We have designed a programme to support children and parents, minimise the anxiety and help them settle quickly and smoothly into Academy life.

For those in need of additional support an opportunity to spend more time familiarising themselves with Academy life.

Special Educational Needs and Disability Support

Students across all schools are supported by a team of staff including support for students with learning difficulties, disabilities or behaviour issues. Interventions and support are tailored to individual needs and progress is closely tracked and monitored. We pride ourselves on developing successful partnerships between home and the Academy in order for every SEND student to achieve their potential.

LAT Alumni

Leigh Academies Trust has partnered with Future First, a registered charity, to bring the LAT Alumni community to life. The Trust is keen to foster a thriving community of ex-students who can bring their expertise back into academies as they progress with their careers.

The LAT Alumni website, designed as our shop window for prospective alumni members, provides the gateway to joining the alumni communities for The Leigh Academy, Longfield Academy, Wilmington Academy, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy and Mascalls Academy.

Stationers’ Company

The Academy is sponsored by a City Livery company, The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. The Stationers’ Company has been involved with education since 1557, initially in the management of apprenticeships for its trades but in 1861 it opened the Stationers’ School just off Fleet Street and later moved to Hornsey. This was closed in 1984 but in September 2014 a partnership was formed with Crown Woods College, now Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy.

Our partnership brings huge benefits and enriches the education of our students.

Stationers volunteer their time to provide governance, resources, professional expertise, mentor students, give careers advice and work experience placements. The Company also provides money to support courses that lead to careers in related industries and gives extra opportunities to all students whatever their financial background. By supporting education that specialises in digital media, the Company aims to promote responsible digital citizenship, widen access to knowledge and maximise job opportunities.

Careers Education and Work-Related Learning

At Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy we prioritise the future of our young people. Students are supported to make successful transitions when they leave the Academy whether into jobs, apprenticeships, Sixth Form or university. We have a specialist adviser who works with students with the emphasis on the points where young people make important decisions e.g. Year 8, 10/11 and Sixth Form. Work experience placements are organised for Year 10 and Sixth Form students.

As part of the Leigh Academies Trust all of the academies are committed to the Investor in Careers Award and Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy is justifiably proud of having achieved the full award in 2014.

Our links with the Trust and the Stationers’ Company provide a wealth of career development opportunities. Our students have access to mentoring schemes, business speakers, career talks, workplace visits, careers fairs and networking events, online resources, and open days at higher education institutions.
