Steel Magnolias By Robert Harling

Lois Crowley (Ouiser) was a thespian during high school. She is well remembered by her 4th grade Coalville Central students for her dramatic oral literature performance of Roald Dahl's The Witches. In 2011, she graced the stage for the first time in years as Ann Putnam in Dreamwell's production of The Crucible and then again last spring, as Marian Hollander in Don't Drink the Water, put on by the ICCT. She has enjoyed playing the role of the acerbic curmudgeon, Ouiser, and thanks Scott for the opportunity to work with him on this playful, touching, and inspiring production.

Jean Grewe (costumes) lives in Williamsburg, Iowa and is married to Mark, her husband of 30 years! She is an elementary teacher and is working toward her Iowa Teaching license. She has been active with ICCT for the past year and was seen in the ensemble for Gigi and was the costumer for that show as well! Other costuming credits include City Circle’s Legally Blond, Noises Off, Guys and Dolls and A Christmas Carol. She is glad to be back with ICCT and the amazing cast of Steel Magnolias!

Carole Martin (Truvy) is a Solon mom of four who works as an occupational therapist for Grant Wood AEA. She has appeared on stage at TCR, MVLCT, City Circle, Usher's Ferry, and was last seen on the ICCT stage in Last of the Red Hot Lovers. Carole thanks Scott for the opportunity to work with him and such a talented group of ladies. She especially thanks her husband Dean for his support, and for running Noelle, Marcus, Lance, and Garett to all their practices, lessons, and games.

Valerie Mozena (Annelle) recently graduated from the College of Wooster where she studied English, Film, and Theatre. After working backstage for the past few years as a lighting designer, director, and techie, she is excited to be back on the stage as Annelle. She is also delighted to be working once again with the wonderful people at ICCT. She'd like to thank her family, both near and far, for their loving encouragement and give special thanks to Megan and Travis for their unwavering support!

Connie Peterson (Stage Manager) is honored to be part of ICCT's Steel Magnolias. She is stage manager for the production and excited to support the director, the cast, and the rest of the crew. Connie started her career in Iowa City working with the UI department of Theatre Arts as marketing director for University Theatres. She then moved on to be art director of University Relations and finally, before retiring, worked as part of the Marketing and Communications team for the University College of Medicine and UI Hospitals. Connie is also the communication chair of the development committee for ICCT.

Kristen Schneider (M’Lynn) has been in many Iowa City Community Theatre productions including Harvey, The Odd Couple, Hedda Gabler, On Golden Pond , and Stage Door. She returns to the stage after a 2 year hiatus to have her two beautiful boys Christopher and Nicholas. Kristin would like to thank Scott for his patience and direction, Ellen for being a wonderful friend as usual, her husband Don Schneider for convincing her it was time to get back onstage, her mother-in-law Vernita for all the babysitting, and most of all her to wonderful boys for sacrificing their mommy time.

Ellen Stevenson (Clairee) has wanted to be in this show since she ran sound for ICCT's last production of it in the 90's. She has performed in many shows with ICCT, as well as City Circle Acting Company and Dreamwell Theatre. She was last seen in a ten minute play for the 24 Hours In A Day Play Festival just this last September. When not on stage, Ellen works for Titronics R&D, and is also a Juice Plus Representative. She would like to dedicate her performance to Mary Beth Schuppert, who played Clairee before her. Mary Beth was too Cha-Cha for words!

Scott K Strode (Director) retired after 34 years at Manchester College, Indiana, as Director of Theatre. His productions included Roman and Shakespearean Comedy, American and European classics, and both large and small musical theatre productions. He directed Steel Magnolias in 1993 with an excellent cast of college women. What an honor to be asked by ICCT to revisit this wonderful play; and it has been a director’s dream to work with these six more mature women who bring to life the nurture, the humor, and the pathos of these six women. To the cast, he says: Thank you, my dears.

Noel VanDenBosch (Shelby) is very happy that Steel Magnolias has given her the excuse to talk with a Southern accent everywhere she goes. Her first ICCT show was Gigi where she played the title role. Most recent performances include City Circle's Christmas Carol(Mrs. Dilber), Dreamwell's Writer's Skirmish play, World's Teeniest (Woman), and MVLCT's Julius Caesar (Cassius). Many thanks to Scott, cast, and crew - it's been amazing! Special thanks to her loving and supportive family and friends. Lastly, Noel would like to thank Jesus Christ for his eternal love, grace, and blessings. Enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE—Scott K Strode

In my opinion, the film version of this play dilutes the central themes of the play by forcing the viewer to experience the husbands, the families, the birds, the dog, and the interminable hospital scene. For me, the power and pathos of the play comes from the love, humor, empathy, and support shared by these six women in their sacred space: Truvy’s beauty parlor. It has been a privilege and an honor to work with these six women to achieve such a powerful ensemble piece. Here are some of their thoughts: “It is rare that a script touches on such profound themes with such a sense of humor and style. It is a huge challenge and a tremendous amount of fun.” “From auditions to table readings to blocking, props, and scenery, as the physical show blossomed around us we grew together.” “This show has such a powerful message about friendships and how they can carry you through the good and the bad. As Truvy says ‘Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.’” “Being in this play has been such a real life reflection on my relationships with my friends.” “We are all different ages, coming from different places each night. But once we’re all together, we are a true ensemble. Our chemistry on stage is real.” “Difficult and heartbreaking, yet beautiful and moving, Steel Magnolias had me mesmerized from the start. I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful group of people to do it with.”
