MANUAL INSTALLATION DEVICE MANAGER If the drivers were not automatically installed they will need to be in-stalled manually. Open up Device Manager as shown opposite. You can do this in Control Panel but it may be best to use the Google Search Engine for a tutorial depending on your Operating System and PC expertise. 1) To manually install the device drivers for the Black USB Dongle expand the ‘Other Devices’ item in Device Manager and you will see the unin-stalled device labelled ‘AMB2560-1100D428’ shown above, its icon will have a yellow exclamation mark that signifies that the drivers for this device have not been installed correctly or at all. 2) Right click on this icon and select properties and press the button ‘Up-date Driver’. This will bring up a dialog box to allow the user to select where the driver files folder is. Click on ‘Browse my Computer…’ and go to the folder on the root directory of the CD labelled below.

\Device Driver\RF Dongle Drivers\Red RF Dongle \Device Driver\RF Dongle Drivers\Black RF Dongle

\Device Driver\RF Dongle Drivers\bebalance+ 3) Select one of the folders above for the USB Dongle being used and click ok. The drivers will now begin to install and may take a few moments. Another Windows Security dialog box may appear informing that Win-dows cannot verify the publisher of the driver software. Click ‘Install this driver software anyway’ and the installation will be completed. 4) When the software has been installed correctly another dialog box will appear showing the device name and the virtual comport number that it has been assigned by Windows. Wireless USB Dongle Drivers

Installation Guide

Introduction This document guides the user through the process of installing the USB Device Drivers for either the

RF (Radio Frequency) or Bluetooth communications devices or dongles that can be used with the

bebalance+ software. The driver files used in this guide can be found in the root directory of the in-

stallation CD or on the Steeper Group website (www.rslsteeper.com/downloads).

Figure 1 – bebalance+

The following wireless devices can be used to interface to the bebalance+ software, the latest be-

balance+ version is v1.2. The Bluetooth USB Dongle is the latest addition and provides IP based

communications.

Bluetooth USB Dongle - BLE121LR

Red RF USB Dongle – AMB2561

Black RF USB Dongle – AMB2560

Bluetooth USB Dongle - BLE121LR This device is a long range Bluetooth device that creates a virtual comport driver that the software can use to communicate with the bebionic hand (Small only). This Bluetooth device is more powerful than its predecessor allowing for more stable connections over a greater distance. This device was designed by Steeper to overcome the limitations of the other RF devices. Driver Files: Steeper bebalance+

Figure 2 – Bluetooth USB Dongle (BLE121LR)

Red RF USB Dongle – AMB2561 This device is an older device that communicates on a single frequency band and therefore can inter-fere with other devices that use the similar frequencies. When reading and writing to the bebionic devices only a single device must be powered to avoid communications conflicts. Driver Files: Steeper bebalance+ (new)

Standard FTDI

Figure 3 – Red RF USB Dongle (AMB2561)

Black RF USB Dongle – AMB2560 This device is even older than the red RF device and has since become obsolete. However we include the guide and drivers for this device as there are still many customers who use this. Driver Files: CP210xVCP

Driver s & Windows Device Manager Tool Each of the USB Dongles listed above creates a virtual comport that the bebalance+ software con-

nects to in order to read and write data to and from the bebionic hands. Before it can communicate,

the correct driver files need to be installed so the operating system can communicate with each de-

vice.

When new hardware/devices are plugged into a computer the operating system should au-

tomatically select the best driver to match but sometimes this does not happen. In this instance the

driver will need to be installed manually.

Below is the Windows Device Manager tool which shows all connected hardware/devices. Below we

can see that there are a number of communications devices listed under ‘Ports (COM & LPT)’. We

are only interested here in the Steeper compatible devices (circled in black, amber and red below).

You can access the Windows Device Manager through the control panel on the Windows

start menu. There are tutorials on the internet for the Operating System being used.

A quick Google search will find these easily enough.

Automatic Driver Installation – RF USB Dongles When an operating system detects new hardware it usually tries to automatically find and install the device drivers itself depending on the operating system in question. When this fails it is up to the user to install them manually.

The following procedure shows what happens when device drivers are installed automatical-ly. The user doesn’t have to do anything except insert the device.

Figure 6 – Red RF USB Dongles (AMB2561)

Inserting a Red RF USB Dongle 1) Insert the Red RF USB Dongle into any USB Port. There will/should be an audible and visual notifi-

cation of a device that has been attached to the system as shown below in figure 7. Here Win-

dows will try to install the drivers automatically.

It may take a few minutes for the driver files to be found and installed. It may appear that

nothing is happening however if you look at the notification icons in the bottom right corner you

will see that one is animating, this indicates that it is still working on finding and installing the

driver files.

Figure 7 – Installing Red RF USB Dongle Drivers (AMB2561)

2) If the device drivers for the red USB Dongle have been installed successfully then another notifi-

cation will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen informing of the successful installation as shown below in figure 8.

The device should now be visible in the Windows Device Manager Tool and in the bebalance+ software.

Figure 8 – Red RF Dongle Drivers installed successfully

The notifications above, figures 7 & 8, show images from the Windows 7 operating system and may appear differently on other operating systems.

The installation of the Black RF USB Dongle is the same as the Red Dongle except the device name is obviously different. Again follow the procedure below for automatic driver installation.

Figure 9 – Black RF USB Dongle (AMB2560)

Inserting a Black RF USB Dongle 1) Insert the Black RF USB Dongle into any USB Port. There will/should be an audible and visual noti-

fication of a device that has been attached to the system as shown below in figure 10. Here Win-

dows will try to install the drivers automatically.

It may take a few minutes for the driver files to be found and installed. It may appear that

nothing is happening however if you look at the notification icons in the bottom right corner you

will see that one is animating, this indicates that it is still working on finding and installing the

driver files.

2) If the device drivers for the Black USB Dongle have been installed successfully then another noti-

fication will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen informing of the successful installa-tion as shown below in figure 11.

The device should now be visible in the Windows Device Manager Tool and in the bebalance+ software.

Manual Driver Installation – All USB Dongles If the drivers were not automatically installed they will need to be installed manually. Open up the

Windows Device Manager Tool as shown below in figure 12. You can do this in Control Panel but it

may be best to use the Google Search Engine for a tutorial depending on your Operating System and

PC expertise.

Figure 12 – USB Properties Figure 13 – Manually Updating Driver Software

1) To manually install the device drivers for any USB Dongle expand the ‘Other Devices’ item in De-vice Manager Tool and you will see uninstalled device(s) labelled as one of below.

The icons will have a yellow exclamation mark that signifies that the drivers for these devices have not been installed correctly or at all.

2) Right click on the icon for the device you want to install and select properties and press the but-ton ‘Update Driver’. This will bring up the dialog box shown in figure 13. We now need to tell the Operating System where the drivers are. Click on ‘Browse my Computer…’ and go to the folder on the root directory of the CD labelled below.

4) When the software has been installed correctly another dialog box will appear showing the de-

vice name and the virtual comport number that it has been assigned by Windows.

As an example the device drivers for the Black RF Dongle were installed correctly as shown below. The bebalance+ software can now be use the Black RF USB Dongle to communicate with the bebionic medium or large hands.
