Bonclarken

We had a fabulous time atthe Middle School Retreat at Bonclarken with 20 of our Junior Highs! Through thekey note speaker, awesome music, and small group discussions, our youth were encouraged to rememberthat God iswith us always, especially when we are under pressure. They enjoyed yummy mealstogether, walked around the beautiful lake, and took turns on the zip line, rope swing and climbing wall. Thank you to allof our youth and chaperones whohelped make this such a great trip!

Operation Christmas Child Christmas already? Yes, it is time to start thinkingabout ourmission, Operation Christmas Child! Weare asking each family to pack at leastone shoe boxfor needy children all over the world. If you start nowpacking and preparing yourboxes, you can savemoney and maybe pack more boxes for poor childrenall overthe world. This not only brightens theirday, but it also spreads the word about God’s love tochildren everywhere whomight not have heard thatmessage otherwise. This year we will have somepre-made shoe boxesavailable on the stage in the Fellowship Hall. Or,you can use an empty shoe box (standardsize, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap thebox (lid separately), but wrapping is not required.Youcan buy these at Dollar Tree or Dollar General.

Most importantly, pray for thechild who will receive your gift.

Determine whether your giftwill be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.Print outthe appropriate boy/girl label from the Operation Christmas Child website, check the correct age category onthe label, and tape the label to thetop of your box.

Fill the box with a variety ofgifts that will bring delight to a child. Click here for gift ideas.

Please donate $7 or more foreach shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. Youcangive online by using our “Follow Your Box Donation” option, or you canwrite a check to Samaritan’s Purse(note “OCC” on memo line) and place it in anenvelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or yourfamily arepreparing more than one shoe box, please make one combined donation.

Place a rubber band aroundeach closed shoe box and drop it off in the Fellowship Hall during ourcollectionweek, by Sunday, November 20, 2016.

Thank you for continuingyear after year to brighten the lives of needy children all over theworld! Questions? Call Harriette Drescher 864 982-8870 [email protected]

Richer Life Ahead

Part of the joy of the gospel for me is God’sinvitation to livea richer life. When I listen toGod’s Word, I hear the gracious beckoningof aloving Lord who asks that I trust Himenough to follow. And as I choose tofollow, Idiscover the richness of a life that isotherwise beyond my reach.

Of course, none of that is natural tome. Notthe listening, not the trusting, not thefollowing. By nature I amcautious, selfish, and self-involved. Following Jesus is workfor me. Butthroughout my life God has graciously called me into connection with others whofollowJesus. Some do so beautifully and winsomely; others do it haltingly andwith great effort. But thecompany of others on my way of faith has convincedme of the beauty, joy, and richness of life withGod. Their example–yourexample–helps me live more fully as Jesus’ servant.

As a pastor I think this way a lot, butmore so in the stewardship season of the church. I see ourfinancial pledgingas part of an invitation to a richer life. The process of looking at our livesand offeringour livelihood to God is a spiritual transaction. Our discernmentchallenges us to think clearly aboutour needs, our blessings, our church, andour faith. The fruit of this process is a commitment to God

thatdeepens our lives in service to God through the ministry of Christ’sChurch.

It’s a tough sell to convince peoplethat generous giving leads to rich living. Our world sees it theopposite way, that our possessions and net worth create the good life. Advertisers do aneffective job ofreminding us of our material desires and inviting us toindulge ourselves. But most of us know thatmaterial pleasures are fleeting, not eternal. The faithful know the truth of the prophet Isaiah’sprobingquestion: “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, andyour labor for thatwhich does not satisfy? . . . Incline your ear, and come tome; listen, so that you may live” (Isaiah55:2-3). Our only satisfaction willcome from the hand of the loving, generous God who gives us theBread ofHeaven.

I pray that each of us will listen forour invitation to richer life with God. I hope that as we do, we willtrust theLord enough to live more fully, more generously, and more abundantly. And Ilook forward toall the encouragement and blessing ahead for our church as wecommit together to deeper, richer lifewith God.
