Mortgage Elimination Project UnderwayThis summer John Knox has been asking an important question: are we able and willing to eliminateour long-standing mortgage? We started July 2019 with a mortgage balance of about $428,000, andthe cost of debt service this year is over $56,000—5.6% of our ministry budget.

Happily, the answer to the question seems to be an enthusiastic “yes!” Members are being asked toconsider pledges above and beyond their customary annual pledge to the ministry; these capitalpledges would be payable over up to five years. Early responses have produced pledges of $278,000,with gifts in hand of $45,100. Since all monies received for this project are going directly to pay downthe principal of the loan, this commitment is already making a big difference. We are stronglyencouraged by this early response--almost 65% of our total need.

Please join in praying for our church’s generous response to the opportunity. We hope to receive allcommitments by September 10. Thanks to all who are faithfully praying about how to further this effortto strengthen our ministry.

Jasmine RoadSarah Circle invites all of the women at JohnKnox and their friends to attend a programabout Jasmine Road on Tuesday morning,September 10, at 10 o’clock in FellowshipHall. Jasmine Road’s mission is “to offerwomen who are trapped in a cycle of sexualexploitation and addiction a path to freedom, ahaven for healing, and the opportunity toflourish, leading to generational change andthe betterment of our Greenville community.”

Guatemala ScholarshipsJohn Knox continues to respond to God’s call toserve our sisters and brothers in and aroundCobán, Guatemala. Please join in thistransformative work by helping to fundstudents’ education in two vital ministries withwhich we partner:

The WALC program (Women in AgroecologyLeadership for Conservation) invites adolescentwomen to a 25-day residency at Rob and TaraCahill’s agroecology center. These young womenlearn sustainable local agriculture, personalgrowth, leadership development, and women’shealth. They commit to continue in school

through the following academic year and receive a modest monthly stipend to cover the cost of tuitionat a local school in their town or village. One scholarship of $150 covers the expense of one student’sparticipation this year.

La Patria Norte is a K-12 school established in 2009 by the Evangelical National Presbyterian Churchof Guatemala. It provides excellent secondary education in Christ’s name to this underserved region, offering degrees in medicine, judicial sciences, agro-forestry, and computers. Worship, Bible study, and faith formation are integral to the learning these students receive. Cost for a student is $600 peryear. One scholarship contribution provides significant support; four scholarship contributions providesa full support for a student in Cobán.

The contribution form is available here and at the church. Thank you for your generosity.
