Dear Stella Community R U OK? Day This week’s assembly reminded girls about the importance of R U OK? Day. On this day, it’s important that we promote meaningful conversations and ongoing support for members of our school and our friends and family. We can always look to the Rule of St Benedict for guidance on being a good community. One of the key verses from the Rule that affirms how we should respond is: ‘Arrange all things so that the strong have something to yearn for and the weak nothing to run from.’ (RB 64:19).

There are times when we need to recognise that we can’t change the circumstances and just need to be there for those who could use our support. Maybe we can reach out to someone if we know that they need a little support with their learning. Perhaps we could remember to include someone that we don’t normally spend time with, who we know is doing it tough.

One of the greatest things I hear about Stella Girls is that the friendships made here are lifelong. Let’s make sure that everyone in our community feels that they belong.

Celebrating International Students at Stella Last week we celebrated International Night with fantastic performances from our overseas students, fun games for the audience and prizes for the winners. There were acts from students from Year 9 to Year 12 with several students who are still in China sending in videos of their performances.

Grace Chen and Emily Moy were amazing hosts, keeping everyone entertained and informed. The quizzes were lots of fun and created a sense of community.

Well done to Year 12 Thalia Gao and Momo Jia, Year 10 Nicky Li and Year 9 Malim Li for taking home the prizes for best performances on the night.

Happy Fathers’ Day Celebrating Father’s Day was a little different this year for everyone and we were disappointed we could not invite you in for a BBQ breakfast. Thank you to the girls who sent in their photos of the day with their dads and father figures. We hope that all families had a chance to celebrate and remember the important carers in their lives.

Providing a Term’s Notice Families are reminded that the College requires one term’s notice of any move to another school or learning environment. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, budgets are set on current numbers, and, as the annual budget is set in September, we need to ensure that we are calculating costs and student numbers accurately. Secondly, once school returns at the start of the year, we are unlikely to make up numbers lost for any students who choose to leave without providing the required notice. Please ensure that if your daughter is leaving at the end of 2020, you have informed Kerrie Dudley, the Registrar by the end of Term 3.

A Prayer for Living the Gospel

God of yesterday, today and tomorrow

We call to mind your presence within us and around us

Open our ears that we may hear your Word

Open our hearts that we may understand your Word

Open our mouths that we may speak your Word

Inspire us with the Gospel message

That we may celebrate all that is life-giving

Restore hope where it has been lost

And work to bring about change where it is needed

May we live the Gospel with courage, constancy and love

May we be open to the challenge of your call to true

freedom

May we be faithful to you in our daily choices and

decisions

May we make your love known through our words and

actions

May the triune God reign in our hearts now and forever

Amen.

Love Your Body Week This week was also Love Your Body Week and the girls in PC reflected on what that means from Year 7 to Year 12. The girls had opportunities to express themselves as sportswomen and hobbyists, showing who they are by wearing loud socks or a crazy hat and lots of colour. The Wellbeing Team were impressed with the response from the girls. Below is a speech from Ms Smith given at Assembly about Love Your Body Week.

“Thank you to all the students who came together to create the Love Your Body Week videos with Mr Wong. They were brilliant and full of honesty, humour and real-life opinions. This week – LOVE YOUR BODY WEEK - is just a snapshot into a conversation that we would love to become commonplace. The more we talk about loving our body for what it can do rather than how it looks, the better we will all feel.

YOUR BODY IS AMAZING. It is the most incredible thing you own. NOURISH IT, NURTURE IT AND RESPECT IT …. And most of all, say THANK YOU to it.

Think of all that you have been able to do up until now simply because your body has allowed you. I’ve climbed mountains, walked hundreds-of-years-old cobbled streets, backpacked, given birth and somehow (I don’t quite know how), stumbled across the finish line of a marathon! Start listing in your head all that you have done that you should THANK your body for!

As I looked for some inspiration for my short talk today, it became so obvious to me that it doesn’t seem to matter how many movies we watch that focus on the theme of “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” …. Because I think you’d all agree that we still often find ourselves in a judgemental headspace. We know the message in these movies is right. We know that there are people far worse off than us. We know that at a life and death moment, your appearance is the last thing that matters … and yet here we are.

So, I thought about the core messages of those movies: Tall Girl, I Feel Pretty, Dumplin, Hairspray, Shallow Hal …. the list goes on …. and when I looked at the heart of what each movie was getting to … the recipe to a positive body image is actually quite simple.

1. It takes COURAGE TO BE YOURSELF; TO BE AUTHENTIC 2. It takes SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH GOOD PEOPLE and GOOD INFLUENCES

That’s it!! So, what do you need to do? It’s time for some tough questions.

Please ask yourself right now …. Do I hang out with people who build me up? Do I walk away feeling happy and relaxed after a conversation? And this last question will take some serious honesty with yourself …. Do I feel that the respect in my friendships goes both ways? Because, when you feel respected and comfortable with your people …. that’s when the magic happens – You. Can. Just. Be. Yourself!

One other important thing to do: As you have heard and will continue to hear from your peers in the morning videos, please talk positively to yourself!

My challenge for you tonight is to get hold of a photo of you when you were 3 or 4 years old. Look at that picture and tell that little girl how much you love her! Think about what her dreams were? Were they to be on stage? To be a professional ballerina? A doctor? A teacher? A marine biologist? Honour her dreams.

What would you say to yourself now if your younger self came running up to you for a hug? Would you tell her she’s beautiful and she can be anything she wants to be? I think you would. Keep remembering the obvious in that scenario – that little girl is YOU.

I now want you to only very briefly think about some negative things you tell yourself ... would you ever whisper them in that little girl’s ear? Of course, you wouldn’t.

That little girl danced when she heard music, she sang while she played , she laughed and laughed and laughed, she dressed up because it felt AWESOME. So, girls, essentially my challenge is for you is to:

Surround yourself with people who make you feel GREAT! This might take some adjustments. And have the COURAGE to just be the bigger and bolder version of that little girl!”

VISUAL ART NEWSMassive Art Opportunity!!!

The Freshwater Community bank are keen to focus a light on the community’s youth and offer an opportunity for a young artist to shine so have kindly notified us of a very exciting art opportunity.

They have asked students in Years 10 to 12 to create an artwork that is inspired by the John Green quote:

‘If you don’t imagine, nothing ever happens at all’

The winning submission will be photographed and printed large scale to hang on the side of the bank in Freshwater.

The final piece will be 2,700mm wide x 2,100mm high.

Your approach to the art work should be to create a positive and uplifting image for the community.

Your artwork may be in any 2-dimensional media and may be something you have already created at school or home or could be a new artwork created just for this opportunity.

All artworks will need to be photographed at a minimum 300 dpi and emailed to Ms Silburn by the 20 September along with a brief description of your vision for the wall.

The winning students work will be exhibited in Freshwater, will receive their work full scale and be awarded $500.

Have fun girls and we will look forward to seeing your amazing entries. The Visual Arts Department

CareersCAREERS NEWSThe end of another week people! What did you learn from this week? Take a moment to reflect on how you approached an assessment task. Do you sometimes wonder how what it is you are working on relates to your future?

The skills and competencies we use to produce our assignments and prepare for exams can be as important as the content we are trying to master! Giving our time to help a friend with their work, can reinforce our learning. Collaborating with others, perseverance, being proactive and self-awareness of how we are feeling about our learning and pushing past a negative mindset can help us to move our learning forward. These competencies are also really relevant in the work place!

***Remember that there is a NEW Stella Extra-Curricular Activity***

Year 10 E-Portfolio Workshops in Library

Year 10’s have been busy with assessment lately. When things settle down, why not join Mrs Barbetti to put together an e-Portfolio?

This will take place in the Library, Room S2-20, during Monday (Day 6) and Thursday (Day 9) lunchtimes. If you would like to spend a little time (as many sessions as you feel you need) giving yourself an advantage that could even be used now as you apply for a part-time job or leadership position, come to the Library in Room S2-20.

These are not resumes/CV’s. They are much more than that and many young people don’t know about them. E-portfolios can include video and photos of work you have done, experiences you are engaged with and it will give you a competitive edge! Check out the link to get an idea of what you will be able to create. The Monday group and the Thursday group, will have a limit of 10 students each. By the end of the year, students who participate will have worked on an e-portfolio such as the example in this link: https://careertools.com.au/portfolio/view/DAKJZAaf

Although you might only need three or four sessions to get it up and running , this will be an ongoing career task that you will be able to build on as you progress through secondary school.

Anybody in Year 10 can join and it will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. To guarantee your place email Mrs Barbetti ([email protected]) stating which time works best so that groups can be organised. Alternatively, if you would like to drop in on the day to check it out, please feel free. Looking forward to working with you!

5 Additional COVID Adjustment Points for Year 12 students applying to the University of Newcastle

2020 has proven to be a challenging time for Year 12 students and we continue to look for ways to provide additional reassurance and support for students.

Based on feedback from a range of stakeholders, we will be providing all school leaver students with an additional 5 adjustment points for all programs (excluding the Joint Medical Program).

These additional adjustment points are in recognition of the disrupted and challenging year for year 12 students. We would love to see these extra points provide encouragement for students to continue to strive for their best results in the HSC.

The additional 5 adjustment points will automatically be applied by UAC and there is no need for any additional application. Students are eligible for a maximum of 12 adjustment points.

We are very excited to share this with you and continue to provide support and reassurance for your students. If you would like further information, please reach out to your Future Students team contact.
