To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL THE SICK IN OUR PARISH If anyone wishes to receive Communion and is unable to come to Mass, call Jason Vaughan at 843-883-3044. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people, Greetings on the Feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday of this year of grace. As we look forward to the beginning of Advent next Sunday, let me give my annual exhortation about the season. While many of you have heard this every year, we are blessed with a number of new families and already I have heard about some minor confusion. I encourage our parish organizations and clubs to refrain from Christmas parties until Christmas, e.g. some years, our Women’s Club has an Advent gathering and ornament exchange. Fine. The difficulty with our commercial culture is that people simultaneously try to prepare for Christmas and celebrate it. Years ago, the stress got to me and I radically simplified my Christmas observances. Advent is the liturgical season to prepare for Christmas. By all means, do the material preparations: shop early, clean the house, send cards, but I encourage you to begin your main celebration when Christmas begins: sundown on Dec. 24. The Church’s Christmas season extends for weeks, at least until Epiphany, traditionally on January 6, giving us the 12 Days of Christmas, a great time for gatherings, parties (the Lowcountry oyster roast for example), and good cheer. Advent is a season of joyful anticipation, but also a penitential season. I encourage you to try to spend it like a mini-Lent taking up extra spiritual works, such as reading Scripture or attending weekday Masses. You might even fast or give up certain things for Advent. The daily Mass readings for Advent are beautiful, taking us through the various layers of the season. Your Christmas will be better. Traditionally, Christmas Eve was a day of fast and abstinence from meat, hence the Italian meal of seven fishes on Dec. 24. Mother Church knows: the feast is better preceded by the fast. Unfortunately, the culture of the mall has taken over Christmas. There’s money to be made and we all get weary of the hype. For a couple of weeks now the station for my clock radio has been playing Christmas music. When I awake to hear Elvis crooning “Blue Christmas” before Thanksgiving, I just laugh. This column is a long answer to the question why you don’t hear Christmas music or see Christmas decorations in the church until December 24: it’s Advent. I think it sad to see Christmas trees out on the trash on December 26. Christmas will have just begun! Have a blessed Advent.
