Prayer with the Sisters of the Good Samaritan On Monday evening I had the privilege of attending Evening Prayer at St Scholastica’s Chapel in Glebe with the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. The prayer was a celebration of a feast in honour of all the Benedictine Saints. School Newsletter Article:

Adolescent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program In early 2017 parents/carers of Year 7 students were asked to provide consent for their children to receive three doses of HPV vaccine in the NSW School Vaccination Program. Most* Year 7 students who have received two doses of HPV vaccine are considered to be fully vaccinated and do not require a further dose. This change is based on recent international studies that show for children aged 9 to 14 years of age, two doses of HPV vaccine provide the same protection as three doses, as long as the second dose is given at least six months after the first dose. Based on this evidence, the World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends a two-dose HPV schedule, and this has already been adopted in comparable countries (i.e. the UK, Canada, the United States and New Zealand) and is now being adopted in Australia. In 2017 Year 7 students were given the second dose of HPV vaccine at least six months after the first dose to accommodate the urgent roll-out of the Meningococcal W Response Program to Year 11 and 12 students. Year 7 students who have received only one dose of HPV this year will be offered their second dose in 2018. Parents/carers whose children were vaccinated in 2017 but who still wish for their child to receive a third dose of HPV vaccine can access a free dose from their general practitioner (GP). * Students with significantly impaired immune systems are still recommended to have three doses of HPV vaccine. Parents of these students should make arrangements to complete the vaccine course with their GP or by calling their local public health unit on 1300 066 055. More information is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/hpv or by calling your local public health unit on 1300 066 055.

CurriculumHISTORY NEWSRemembrance Day Ceremony – Saturday, 11 November 2017

Year 7 History have been studying Japan and learning about the story of Sadako and her 1000 paper cranes of peace. Sadako developed Leukemia as an 11 year old after the Atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 where she grew up. Sadako was 5 years of age at the time and was only a kilometre from the bomb site. Some of her personal cranes are on display in the Ground Zero Museum in New York, The Pearl Harbour Museum and the Hiroshima Peace Centre. For those looking for stocking fillers the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is a great read for your kids.

Year 7 History combined the story of Sadako with the Remembrance Day Ceremony and decided to make a peace wreath using their own origami Peace Cranes. Carla Krnel and Erin Fisher represented Stella Maris College at Saturday’s Remembrance Day Ceremony. They laid the peace cranes as a symbol of peace and hope for the future and a floral wreath to remember those fallen defending Australia in all previous wars that Australians fought. Thanks to Erin and Carla for giving up their Saturday morning to represent Stella Maris with such maturity and respect for the occasion.

VISUAL ARTS NEWSCongratulations to Charlotte Mackenzie, Hannah Bowley and Rachel Driessen on their works being selected for ‘Express Yourself 2018’.

Express Yourself is an exhibition of Artworks by HSC Art Students from 20 high schools across Sydney’s Northern Beaches region, representing diverse bodies of work including multi-media, digital, sculpture, graphics and drawing. In conjunction with Express Yourself, two awards are granted annually to students featured in the exhibition, Manly Art Gallery & Museum Society Youth Art Award and the Theo Batten Bequest Youth Art Award, awarded to a student continuing tertiary study in the arts. This exhibition is part of ARTMONTH, Sydney.

Rachel Driessens’ work is titled: ‘Delfls Blauw (Delft Blue) #4169E2’ and is a series of ceramic works about ‘Exploring relationships in my European and Australian connections, Delfts Blauw, a collection of ceramic plates, revisits the traditional art form of ceramic design.’ As Rachel expresses in her Artist Statement.

Hannah Bowley’s work is titled: ‘Your Body Is Still A Battleground”, a series of sculptures defined as ‘feminist’ by Hannah in her Artist Statement, she also adds: ‘Please understand that feminism simply means equality, not the suppression of men’. Inspired by artists such as Barbara Kruger and Tracey Emin.

Charlotte Mackenzies work is titled: ‘An Illustrated Account Of Creatures The World Will Never See Again,’ a series of ink drawings with watercolour of bird images, sewn into with cotton thread, accompanied by audio of bird song.

Charlotte’s Artist Statement reads: “We are looking upon the uttermost finality, which can be written, glimpsing the darkness which will not know another ray of light.” Henry B Hough. My body of work is the final resting place for bird species seemingly forgotten along with the growing list of extinct creatures.’

The works are very impressive and we are thrilled for the three students as this is a great accomplishment and a recognition of all their hard work. We also are grateful for the excellent guidance from the Visual Art teachers. We look forward to seeing the exhibition through March and April next year at the Manly Art Gallery & Museum.

Belinda Foss, Head of Visual Arts
