Director of CurriculumThe Stella Tutor ProgramThe Stella Tutor Program continues to grow into a great study aid for our senior girls. Operating out of the Senior Study hub at the Benedict Campus, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, Stella girls are able to get help with their study across a broad range of subject areas. Cross-curricular skills like essay writing, directive verb attack, scaffolding, question dissection, how to use a quote, how to use data to support a conclusion, how to chunk information, different ways to solve a problem, even basic study skills are proving popular areas for assistance.

Our three ex-students – Brigid, Rebecca and Angel, are patient, caring and of course, super smart! They were excellent students while at Stella and have continued building from that solid foundation in various courses at university. We thank them for their continued commitment to the College.

All senior students are welcome to use the program. Our Year 12 students are preparing for their HSC exams and our Year 11 students are working towards their final assessments in the last two weeks of this term. The Senior Study Hub should be packed with students embracing this fabulous free opportunity for help. Please encourage your daughter to stay after school and study, connect with others and reinforce positive work practices.

Louise Yeates, Director of Curriculum

Family Handbook – JewelleryOur 2017 Family Handbook is still available on the College Parent Portal and is a great ready reckoner to have close by when those tricky questions come up about uniform.

Heads of Year and I have recently had lots of questions regarding jewellery, particularly earrings, and the Stella Uniform. We have been completely clear with the girls about what is acceptable at Stella. If you would like our support, or more information, please let the relevant Head of Year know, via email or phone. In the short term though the Family Handbook is concise and clear. Information regarding jewellery can be found on Page 35.

If your daughter does have a piercing that is outside of the College uniform guidelines, she is now able to wear clear plastic spacers to ensure the piercing does not close over but is not visible. Bandaids are not acceptable in these circumstances. Given the time it takes for piercings to heal we would advise these do not take place during term time.

Sarah Carter, Deputy Principal

from the Deputy Principal

Happy Father’s Day to all of the wonderful fathers/father figures within our Stella community and thanks for joining us at our Fathers’ Day Breakfast. We hope you have a relaxing day with your family on Sunday.

NAPLAN 2017 – Keeping Perspective NAPLAN results letters went out to our Year 7 and 9 students this week. We needed to wait until we had completed the Readiness Test – a NESA requirement of all schools in NSW in preparation for NAPLAN to go online. Thank you for your enquiries, we had not forgotten.

Our Year 7 students have performed at levels well above State. The percentages of our students in the top three bands compared with the State averages are shown:

Reading: 79% Stella 60% State Writing: 69% Stella 43% State Numeracy: 78% Stella 64% State

Together with our on-going assessment data and teacher observations, NAPLAN data can be used to target student strengths and highlight areas for improvement. Further analysis by staff will occur at our next twilight professional learning session.

This year, for the first time, there was the perception that a lot more was riding on Year 9 NAPLAN results. Students are able to “tick off” that they have reached the new minimum literacy and numeracy standards required to qualify for the award of the HSC. Remembering that the HSC for a student in Year 9 is still three years away, this is indeed a feat. Students achieving a Band 8 or above result in the Reading, Writing and Numeracy tests have reached the standard already. This is a very high standard for a Year 9 student – it is the standard expected for people entering the workforce as adults. The Stella Vs State statistics:

Reading: Stella 74% State 58% Writing: Stella 67% State 45% Numeracy: Stella 69% State 59%

It is then not surprising that many students are not at this standard yet. The word “yet” is crucial if we want to support a growth mindset so our girls feel confident and positive about their future. It is so important that any student who has not yet reached this level gets the message that about 50% of Year 9 students in the State are in the same position; they have not failed or let anyone down. I was reminded by my own children that they would have been in this group, but they have managed to survive school and get to uni. Sometimes I’m not sure how, but they did it!

NAPLAN provides just one early opportunity to demonstrate the minimum standard in literacy and numeracy. Given that benchmarks in learning don’t run by the same calendar in every student, opportunities will be given during Years 10, 11 and 12 to complete an on-line test to shown the required level of achievement. This is all very new, so as more information about the on-line tests becomes available next year, it will be communicated to students and parents.

SCREENAGERS is a film about the impact of the digital age on our children and how to help families find balance and in turn minimise any harmful effects. After seeing the film, you will feel more confident and better equipped to establish balance around screen time.

This movie probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director’s own, and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists, solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.

Mission

Stella CommunityINTERNATIONAL NIGHT“Our International Night held on Thursday, 24 August, was a huge success with all Year groups joining us and a lot of teachers and homestay parents who came along to support us. It is the night to see the talent and creativity of our Stella international girls and you can’t imagine how wonderful the night was.

The entertainment ranged from singing, Japanese and Korean dances, piano pieces and games… And guess what? We had a talent magic show by Karis from Year 12. It was just fabulous and everyone enjoyed it. Also, Year 7 girls had a fantastic drum performance and singing. They showed their talent and young energy to the rest of the school- it just cannot go unnoticed!

Our International prefects Carmen Luo, Cici Liu and Steph Cramer put a lot of effort into organising and hosting the night and they did an amazing job.

Honestly, it was night you should not have missed out on at all. The talent was exceptional on the night and I really enjoyed it as usual.’

First: Karis Peng, Year 12 – Magic show

CurriculumHISTORY NEWSVeterans HonouredThe Year 10 Elective History class attended the Northern Beaches Council’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Service at the Manly Corso War Memorial last Friday. They appear here with George Carpenter a Veteran who Commanded the Parade. The class had recently completed a unit on the role the media played in the Vietnam War and Australia’s role in the conflict. Jessie MacDonald and Natalie Taylor laid the wreath on behalf of Stella Maris College.

One of the most well-known Australian engagements of the Vietnam War was the Battle of Long Tan, 18 August 1966. The battle saw the action of 108 Anzacs against a Viet Cong (North Vietnamese) force estimated between 1,500 and 2,500. The battle was one of the heaviest conflicts of the Vietnam War as well as one of the few battles in the recorded history of the world to be won against such odds.

Vietnam Veterans' Day, celebrated in Australia on 18 August each year, commemorates the Battle of Long Tan and those Australians who served during the Vietnam War, and is an opportunity to remember those who did not come home.

Sydney Harbour Attack Remembered Seventy-five years ago, under the cover of darkness, a group of Japanese midget submarines secretly cruised into Sydney harbour and launched an attack that would bring the Second World War to the city's doorstep. Twenty-one Australian and British sailors were killed when a converted ferry, the HMAS Kuttabul, was sunk by a torpedo in the surprise naval offensive that shocked Sydney. Left shattered was the belief held by many Sydneysiders, that they were safe and protected from the conflict being played out across other parts of the world. Stella Maris College was represented at the Memorial Service that commemorated this event, by Year 11 students Brianna Richardson and Layla Zak-Volpato. The event was organised by former PM Tony Abbott, Mark Biskin, Head of the Australian Defence Force, was the guest speaker, reliving the day when World War 2 came to Sydney’s shores.

Performing ArtsDANCE NEWSJunior Dance Ensembles On Saturday the Junior Dance Ensembles competed at the Ryde Eisteddfod against eighteen groups from other Secondary Schools across NSW. This was the first competition the girls have competed in since we reworked their routines with new choreography and music. The girls all performed beautifully and I was very impressed with how well they had mastered their routines after only four or five lessons. The Jazz Ensemble gave a sharp, sleek performance but missed out on a place by two marks. The Lyrical Ensemble gave a particularly moving performance and placed third! We were all very excited with this result and are looking forward to our final competition on 22 October, and to performing the new pieces at Dance Night in Term 4, on 9 November.
