4. Put on Eye/Facial Protection Eye protection, or a face shield must cover the entire front of eye and extend completely along the sides.

Prescription eyewear alone does not qualify as eye protection.

5. Put on Gloves Gloves must be clean, durable, chemical and tear resistant. They must be long enough so the cuffs of the gloves cover the cuffs of the gown. Ensure your skin is not exposed at the wrist.

Examination gloves are not appropriate for cleaning and sterilizing medical equipment.

Removing your PPE (Doffing): The steps for removing your PPE must be done in the order shown, whether you are using disposable or reusable equipment.

Steps for removing your PPE (Doffing) Important Points

1. Remove Gloves Grab the outside edge of your glove near the wrist and peel away from your hand, turning the glove inside out.

Hold the glove in the opposite gloved hand. Slide your un-gloved finger or thumb under the wrist of the remaining glove.

Peel the glove off and over the first glove, making a bag for both gloves. Put the gloves in the garbage.

2. Hand Hygiene Use soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Applying hand hygiene after removing soiled gloves reduces the risk of contaminating the back of your neck while removing your gown.

3. Remove Gown Start by unfastening the ties. Then, beginning at the back of your shoulders, pull the gown down over your arms. Roll the gown off and away from you.

Place the gown in the hamper or if disposable, the garbage.

4. Hand Hygiene Use soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Applying hand hygiene after removing a soiled gown reduces the risk of contaminating your neck and face while removing your eye protection and mask.

5. Remove Eye/Facial Protection Only touching the headband or earpieces, pull away from your face.

If reusable set aside for later cleaning; if disposable, place it in the garbage.

6. Remove Mask Bend forward slightly, and touch only the ties or elastic bands. Start with the bottom tie, and then remove the top tie. Place the mask in the garbage.

Do not touch the front of your mask.

7. Hand Hygiene Use soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Applying hand hygiene after removing soiled PPE reduces the risk of self-contamination.

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta has also produced a brief video that clearly demonstrates the steps for
