Shopping malls are usually inside one or several large buildings so people can stay out of the weather while they shop. Escalators and walkways connect the different stores and levels. Shopping malls usually include large department stores, and smaller stores such as clothing stores, electronics stores and sporting goods stores. Apart from shops and services such as restrooms and ATM machines, there are cafés and restaurants. Many shopping malls also have movie theaters and sports clubs. 2 Work in groups. Follow the steps to create your own shopping mall. Take turns making notes. Step 2 Make a map of your shopping mall Draw the outline of your shopping mall. What shape is it? How many levels does it have? Where’s the main entrance? Add outlines of the different shops. Choose the best place and shape for each shop. What other things do you need to add to the plan – restrooms, ATM machines, stairs … ? Let’s make the shopping mall rectangular. This is the best place for the sporting goods store. I think the clothing store should be next to the sporting goods store. We need to add some restrooms and ATM machines. Why don’t we put the restrooms here? That’s a good/great idea. People like shopping malls because they can find a lot of different stores in one place. Step 3 Prepare your store ■ Draw the layout of the store you chose in Step 1. Copy the shape from the shopping mall map.■ What do you need to include in your store layout – a window, shelves, fitting rooms … ?■ Make a list of items to sell in your store and give each item a price.

Step 4 Make a TV or radio ad ■ Give your shopping mall a name.■ Make a list of your shopping mall’s unique features

– 12 stores, new fashions, great food …■ Write a script for a 15- or 30-second TV or radio ad.■ Record or shoot a video of your ad.

Step 5 Open your shopping mall ■ Play your ad for the rest of the class. ■ Present your store to the class.■ Role-play a store scene.

and asks to buy something.■ If the item is on your list, tell him or her the

Step 6 Visit other shopping malls ■ Watch the other groups present their

shopping malls. ■ Visit some of the stores and ask to buy

some things.■ Discuss the different shopping malls. Which shopping mall had the best stores? Did you find things to buy in the stores? Which was the most original shopping mall? Why?

Grand Central had the best stores.

I liked Grand Central because it had a sporting goods store.

It had the best services.

The design of the building was unusual.
