Philip: I’m Philip, from the United States, and we don’t wear uniforms at my school. Kids usually wear casual clothes like jeans and T-shirts. But some schools in the States have rules about uniforms. At my cousin’s school, the students wear white shirts and blue pants. All the schools in Mexico have uniforms. It’s the same in Brazil. They often wear shorts because it’s hot. In schools in high altitudes in Peru, a hat is sometimes part of the uniform. In most European countries, like Spain, Germany, and Italy, students in public schools don’t wear uniforms. But in England, students in all schools, public and private, wear uniforms.Students in Japan and China wear uniforms. They often have a different uniform for summer and winter.I don’t know what’s best. What are the rules about school clothes in your country?

Katie: I want to know, do some animals dream?

Elizabeth: Well, Katie, let’s ask Doctor Michael Kent from International University. Doctor…?

Michael: Katie, that’s an interesting question. Well, there are two types of sleep. There’s sleep with dreams and sleep with no dreams. Now, we know that cows and horses can sleep when they stand up and when they lie down, but they only dream in their sleep when they lie down.

I recommend you take a train to Quebec City for the Winter Carnival. It takes about three hours, and you don’t have to worry about snow when you ride the train. Quebec’s carnival is so much fun! There are many games and parades. People dance outside in the cold and snow. You and your family will have a fun time in Canada in January!

Mike: Mr. Goldman, you traveled around the world last year. What was your favorite trip?

Mr. Goldman: I think my trip on a boat down the Amazon River was my favorite adventure. We saw so many fantastic birds, fish, and animals. It was really hot and humid, but I wore a big hat, pants, and shirts with long sleeves. I needed protection against the sun and mosquitoes.

Rachel: I don’t like really hot weather. Is there a fun city that has cool weather in the summer that my family can visit?

Mr. Goldman: Yes! Fly to San Francisco, California. It’s often cool in the summer. Perfect weather for walking up and down the big hills in the city! When you get tired, you can ride the old streetcars. It’s usually cool and windy on the bay. Pack good walking shoes, jackets, and pants. But also bring shorts and T-shirts. When the sun comes out, it’s hot.

Jenn: I want to go to Alaska, but my mom thinks it will be too cold. What do you think?

Mr. Goldman: Alaska is a great trip, and it’s warm in the summer so pack shorts. But take sweaters and a scarf, and gloves for the cold days. I recommend you take a cruise ship from Seattle to Alaska. From the ship you can see fantastic mountains, whales, and wild animals. It’s a very exciting cruise, and your mother will love it too.

Anyway, it was near the end of the movie, and suddenly there was a loud knock on the window. I thought it was the bad man from the movie! Of course it wasn’t him. It was just my dad. He didn’t have his keys to get into the house.

Unit 8Track 35

Page 96, Exercise 2

Mr. Goldman: One of my favorite trips is to Montreal, Canada, in January! Montreal is cold and has a lot of snow in the winter. Can you believe I forgot to pack my boots on my trip last year? Fortunately, Montreal is a great shopping city, and I bought a new pair of boots. There are a lot of sales in the stores in January, so shopping is fun. When you pack for a winter vacation in Canada, bring boots, a winter coat, a hat, and gloves for outside. For indoors, bring long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, and sweatshirts. You don’t need to rent a car and drive in the snow because Montreal has good public transportation. You can travel everywhere on the subway, and it’s warm on the subway.

Charlie: Dragons are always so mean and scary.

Sophie: Not always. Did you know dragons bring good luck in China? Chinese people name every year after an animal. The year of the dragon was 2012. The next dragon year starts in 2024.

Charlie: Do dragons ever do anything good in any stories?

Sophie: Yes! In many Greek stories, the dragon lives in a castle and watches over treasure of jewelry and gold. The word “dragon” comes from a Greek word. It means “the one who watches or sees clearly.”

Charlie: Do all countries have stories about dragons?

Sophie: There are stories about dragons in countries all over the world. The oldest story in English is about the hero named Beowulf. He was a leader in two countries, and later in life Beowulf killed a dragon.

Sophie: The modern British writer J.R.R. Tolkien loved this old story. In his book The Hobbit, he wrote about another dragon, called Smaug. There was a movie about this part of The Hobbit – the part with the dragon Smaug. Did you see it?

Charlie: No, but it sounds interesting.

Dad: Do Nothing Day? Is that what you did last Saturday?

Mary: No, Dad. BUY Nothing Day. It means you spend no money for one complete day. We heard about it on the radio. Buy Nothing Day started in Canada, and now it’s a popular idea all over the world.

Kyle: You see, Dad, when you don’t buy anything all day, it helps you protect the environment and think about how to live a simpler life.

Dad: That sounds good, but what did you do all day?

Mary: Mom made us a big healthy breakfast. Then, after breakfast we made sandwiches and we packed some snacks and drinks. We got on our bikes and rode over to the Old Town Park. We visited the Old Town History Center. It’s free on the first Saturday of the month.

Kyle: After that we had a picnic next to the river. Then we rode our bikes over to the basketball court. Four kids were there and they asked if we wanted to play. So we played basketball with them. Then we rode home.

Mary: We couldn’t go out for dinner on Buy Nothing Day, so Mom had a great idea. We made pizza for dinner.

Kyle: That was fun and it tasted great. Then we watched a movie on TV.

Dad: It sounds like a great day, and it didn’t cost anything. Let’s make Buy Nothing Day a family tradition every weekend.
