Steps in Parquet Flooring Construction

This brief presentation is for those who wish to know how parquet flooring
construction is conducted. As such, parquet flooring had always been in vogue
since the times of Kings of France.
Parquet flooring involves usage of uniformly shape geometric blocks or tiles of
wood, called parquet blocks. These blocks are arranged in regular, uniform
geometric shapes. The parquet blocks are made of rectangle, square or any other
regular shape having particular, fixed ratios. This varies from one design to
another.
Read on below, for more information on how parquet floors are setup and what
methods are involved in its construction.
The initial phase involves preparation of the subfloor, over which wooden tiles or
parquet blocks are fixed upon. The final phase involves placing the blocks in
geometrical patterns that give a regularized, uniform shape.
Phase 1:
Step 1: Cleaning of the sub-floor
The subfloor, i.e floor below the tiles is to be thoroughly cleaned from debris,
paints, adhesives and other such obstructions. This is done, so as to provide a
smooth and clean surface to work with further.
Step 2: Leveling the subfloor
Surface undulations need to be scrapped by using a sander to sand the sub-floor.
This is crucial, because it would not be possible to setup wooden tiles, as they
may not fix easily and their edges will not interlock.

Step 3: Replacement of damaged areas
As described earlier, damaged areas need to be replaced so as to provide a
smooth surface to work on.
Step 4: Tightening of loose areas
Subfloor below the tiles may over time, sink in due to porous material. This can
lead to sunken tiles over a long term period. The remedy is to compress the
subfloor using machines.
Phase 2:
Step 1: Marking of the centre
Wall centers are marked as work begins by laying tiles from the centre till the
edges of the wall. Chalk lines are drawn which intersect one another.
Step 2: Placement of parquet tiles
Parquet tiles are to be laid down, but not glued, so as to mark any tiles that need
to be cut, for fitting properly.
Step 3: Adhesive use
Adhesive can be applied when the tiles are marked to be placed. It should be
applied so that eight tiles can be fixed with one tile at centre.

Step 4: Alignment
All the rows of tiles are to be laid, except the last row on the edge of the wall. This
is due to the fact that last row tiles have to be cut and shaped in a manner that
they can be fixed easily.
Step 5: Floor Roller
After the tiles are laid and fixed, a floor roller needs to be used for evening the
surface.
