Project Title Triple AAA Housing

Detailed Project Description – What challenge or opportunity you would like the students to examine.

Affordable housing developer/operators including

public housing authorities control the majority of the

country’s subsidized housing. At present, it is typical

for these landlords to screen out those with

challenging tenancy histories or those with support

needs. To the extent that the housing needs of these

individuals and families are met, the job has fallen to

not for profit developers of supportive housing.

Similarly, underinvestment in the efficiency and

sustainability of existing affordable multifamily rental

housing is pervasive and undermines environmental

and health gains achieved through more energy

efficient new construction.

A strategy to make affordable housing more

environmentally and socially resilient that focuses only

on new construction is not adequate. As we learned

through our experience as a large developer of

supportive housing in New York City, the capacity of

not for profit developers of supportive housing is far

too limited ever to meet the demand for housing that is

socially inclusive of the homeless and others with

special needs. Moreover, with our aging population,

more and more people will need housing options that

have the features of supportive housing: accessible,

and linked to health and mental health supports. New

alliances are needed throughout the whole affordable

housing sector to adapt existing buildings to meet

today’s environmental and social challenges. Our goal

is to build the interest, confidence and capabilities of

the sector to rent to those they typically reject can

adequate housing options be available to those who

need them most and in so doing adapt their properties

physically to make them more sustainable and

resilient.

housing authorities, we found a surprising openness to

rethinking their practices on access and a readiness to

rent to special populations if certain fears could be

addressed. Their concerns fell into three areas:

● Need for training on adapting buildings and

management practices

● Need for third party guarantee of rent

● Need for identified social services partner

responsible for addressing tenant support

needs

To address these needs, we want to do a feasibility

study to test whether a membership based program for

landlords – akin to AAA for car owners – would assist

with addressing the concerns of landlords when

renting to special populations, including the most

vulnerable members of society.

The MBA student will report to our inspiring places team and they will help direct them to foundation and landlords to start on the research. We will also ensure they have access to experts and internal research that we have done to inform our planning work on this project.

A plan which helps direct our strategy with an eye for practical implementation. We do not need an academic work but a conclusive study of the market and how we can best position our proposed project to be most successful in the pilot stage.

Background: Brief biography of the project supervisor

Nadine is responsible for the development of supportive housing and community development through local partnerships and the implementation of strategic development initiatives that support the mission of the organization. Nadine has extensive experience in planning, design and construction supervision for housing development projects. Her expertise include sustainable design, program development based on needs of diverse populations and the integration of health concerns into building design. Nadine has been responsible for overseeing the design and development of more than 1,000 units of affordable housing, over 800 of which were built sustainably. She is a member of the Architectural League of New York, Architecture for Humanity and the Housing Committee for the Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program in the Northeast. Nadine has been a visiting critic and lecturer at Columbia University, Pratt School of Architecture, Parsons School of Design and Yale University. Nadine earned her BA in architectural studies from Tufts University and her Masters of Architecture with Honors from Illinois Institute of Technology.

Currently, our training services consist of 1 on 1 tutoring, where support is provided throughout the fiscal year as deliverables are due. There is a tremendous demand and need for training in charter schools across the country, but our current model does not allow us to meet the need. We plan to launch a training division that increases the efficient use of our current team members and allows us to expand our reach and provide training services to those outside of NYC. This division would include in-person group training seminars, publications documenting our best practices, webinars, online classes and remote 1 on 1 tutoring via Skype, Face Time, email and/or phone.

Background: Brief biography of the project supervisor

Raj Thakkar is a social entrepreneur committed to the financial solvency of the

charter sector. In 2006, after serving as the Chief Financial Officer of Explore

Charter School for 4 years, he founded Charter School Business Management

(CSBM) in New York City. CSBM currently serves more than 100 clients by either

training its clients regarding financial best practices or managing schools’ financial

responsibilities on their behalf.

CSBM’s work has been recognized by numerous highly-respected organizations:

In March 2009, we were named the Small Business of the Year for the Eastern region by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

In April 2011, Raj Thakkar was named the Small Business Person of the Year for the New York district of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

In November 2012, CSBM was named one of the Top 50 Best Places to Work in New York City by Crain’s New York Business. CSBM has also been profiled in the New York Daily News, Creative Living magazine, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce’s Quarterly Newsletter, and numerous publications of New York University.

Global Goods Partners (GGP) sells handmade, fair trade artisan goods produced by women's community organizations in Asia, Africa and the Americas. As a not-for-profit organization, GGP uses proceeds from product sales to provide technical assistance and capacity-building grants to its artisan partners. By focusing on increasing income for communities and raising global awareness, GGP strives to support sustainable development in the areas of economic empowerment, education, health and women's rights.

Global Goods Partners works with close to 40 groups of women artisans around the world. Our partners range from small cooperatives to large and growing for-profit companies. We recently developed a diagnostic tool to identify weaknesses in our partners’ business operations. As the next step, we want to develop a technical assistance program and curriculum to train partners and help them grow their businesses and change more lives. We would like the SCC team to survey business training materials publicly available, reach out to organizations like ACCION to assess and gather other resources for training materials, and generate trainings related to business basics like accounting, inventory management, finance, and pricing that are specifically tailored to the needs of GGP partners.

Jennifer Gootman has twelve years experience working with economic development and arts-focused nonprofits and social enterprises. Prior to joining GGP, Jennifer was the deputy director of City Futures, the nonprofit parent of City Limits magazine and Center for an Urban Future think tank. She has also worked as communications director for Art in General, a nonprofit cultural organization in Lower Manhattan, and with Agora Partnerships in Nicaragua, where she planned and implemented a distribution and scaling strategy for a jewelry business that trains and employs disadvantaged youth. In addition to her work in social enterprise, Jennifer designs and produces her own line of jewelry. According to the World Bank, currently 77% of Haiti’s population falls below the poverty line with over 40% unemployed (80% of those employed work in the informal sector).

challenges that Haitians face, the Government of Haiti issued the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development in which it emphasized the need for urban renovation, employment generation and support to microfinance institutions. Globally, microfranchising has emerged as a viable and innovative tool for poverty alleviation and is now being considered as a potential approach for spurring Haiti’s economy. The microfranchising model targets low-income entrepreneurs with a ready-made “business-in-a-

box.” The model reduces the risk of failure for participants by minimizing business start-up costs and reduces the risk for businesses, which are often hesitant to mentor student apprentices and young employees. In a successful microfranchise relationship, dividends accrue to both partners: participants (franchisees) benefit from increased income, while businesses (franchisors) benefit from expanded customer reach, visibility and market share. In February of 2013, the IRC conducted an initial diagnostic study to analyze the market conditions and business environment by which microfranchising has developed and/or can further develop in Port au Prince and Cap-Haitien in Haiti. The study set out to identify market needs and microfranchise opportunities for vulnerable women and youth, and to identify key stakeholders, understand regulatory frameworks, and, in essence, gauge the feasibility and sustainability microfranchise development and expansion in Haiti. This study produced a shortlist of promising sectors and businesses with potential for microfranchising. This project will take the next steps of developing full microfranchise models with two to three of the shortlisted businesses. This will entail close collaboration with the companies and potential microfranchisees to ensure that the relationship results in lucrative and sustainable models for all stakeholders.

Emerging consensus among experts in youth economic opportunities programming highlights the importance of mentorship in social and financial capital development as well as smooth transitions to adulthood. IRC has implemented a range of mentoring and training programs aimed at building skills of young people in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, basic decision making and other life skills. The stumbling block in programming comes when trying to find a sustainable way to continue mentoring and training models beyond specific project funding. IRC has been particularly interested in developing a for profit or business model that would allow delivery of specific trainings and/or the development of mentoring programs. Briefly describe your organization and its goals/mission

The Laundromat Project (The LP) is committed to improving the quality of life of modest-income

New Yorkers of color by bringing engaging, community-invested art and artists into local

spaces, such as coin-ops. By turning imaginations into creative fuel, we aim to amplify the

creative assets that already exist in communities; thus, helping to build networks, enhance

community ownership, expand tools for problem solving, and build pride right where we live and

work.

We focus on neighborhoods (primarily Bedford-Stuyvesant, Harlem, Hunts Point) grappling with

a range of inequities from housing to education to the environment. Yet, the talented and

resourceful artists living within our midst are often under-utilized assets. They are problem-

solvers who often see issues from multiple and unexpected perspectives. Many of them are

seeking ways to better connect to their neighborhoods, rather than sometimes being viewed as

troublesome outsiders. On the other side of the coin, local residents who do not identify as

artists are rarely asked to recognize, value, or tap into their inherent creative capacity,

especially in addressing local concerns. Through our work, The LP hopes to seed, connect, and

nurture a “creative corps” that includes both artists and residents working together to build a

better community of their own making.

We run two major programs to help us realize these goals. Our flagship Create Change is two-

pronged: 1) we resource 3-6 artists of color each year to set up arts residencies in their own

neighborhood laundromats; and 2) we recruit up to 15 professional development fellows, of all

diversities, to partake in a five-month series of workshops focused on developing/deepening

their socially-engaged art practice; 3) Our Works in Progress program brings free, fun, and

engaging arts programming to local Laundromats and neighborhood festivals.

The LP has a number of untapped assets and opportunities for earned income that we would like to explore and quantify. For instance, we have considered charging Laundromats a membership fee for using their business as a site for our art classes; thus, often creating a buzz and improving their business through color and creativity. Success would be a well-thought out business plan that is feasible and scaffolded while also being a bit of a stretch as we grow organizationally. Ultimately, we are aiming for long-term organizational sustainability and an earned income model is a critical component of our overall strategy. The Osborne Association was incorporated in 1933 to carry on the work of prison reformer

Thomas Mott Osborne, perhaps the most forward-looking criminal justice system visionary of

the 20th century. His guiding principles – that everyone deserves a second chance, that

everyone can change, and that everyone deserves to be treated with respect – inform, inspire

and infuse all of our work. With more than 70 years experience in the business of criminal

justice alternatives, Osborne has continually enhanced and expanded its services to incorporate

new knowledge and research to best meet the changing needs of those affected by crime and

America’s response to crime. During the mid-1980’s Osborne developed its Alternatives to

Incarceration (ATI) program, which includes both advocacy for jail and prison-bound individuals,

in support of and in partnership with Court-appointed attorneys, and the capacity to place

individuals directly into individually tailored alternatives. Osborne’s ATI program is part of a

range of programs that make Osborne a premiere multi-service organization helping men,

women and children involved in the criminal justice system at every stage, offering vocational,

educational, family, health, housing and advocacy services. The oldest such organization in

New York, Osborne offers programs that divert people from prison, assist them and their

families during incarceration, and support the transition of prison families following release.

Programs revolve around an evidence-based, dynamic theory of change, supported by factors

known to bring success, including employment, sobriety and strong family ties. Services are

offered in community sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Poughkeepsie, in courts citywide, and in

facility-based sites on Rikers Island as well as in ten New York State correctional facilities,

including both men’s and women’s prisons.

Project Title Court Services Market Research

Detailed Project Description – What challenge or opportunity you would like the students to examine.

The Osborne Association’s Court Advocacy Services (CAS) serves NYC criminal defense attorneys whose clients face incarceration. Forensic social workers and court advocates conduct in-depth psycho-social assessments, collect and review records, and develop individualized pretrial release and sentencing recommendations for submission to the court and district attorney. We seek alternatives to pretrial detention when possible, and in appropriate cases seek alternatives to incarceration. Our recommendations for lesser or non-incarcerative sentences meet the needs of the individuals we serve, satisfy the conditions set by the Court, and promote public safety. Currently CAS is funded almost entirely by government contracts and the individuals served are all deemed indigent by the courts. We seek to develop a fee-for-service component that generates revenue for our operations, geared to clients who can also benefit from our advocacy services and who can afford to pay directly for them. This is a new endeavor for us and more information about the feasibility and potential market for this approach is needed before we can launch the effort.

We seek students who are skilled in market research, including interviewing. Skills in marketing plan development will also be important. An understanding of the court system and public defender services is not necessary; we will provide information and resources in order for team members to understand the context of our work.

We are experts in our program area but do not have internal expertise in the areas of market research or business plan development. We believe that this is a project that is very well suited to the skills and knowledge of MBA students.

We will make any necessary internal documents available, including copies of current government contracts and examples of CAS work products. We will provide access to CAS staff and partners (including client attorneys) as needed for information gathering. In addition, we will

facilitate access to courtroom visits, for team members who wish to see our court advocates in action.

What outcomes do you feel would make the project a success?

This project would be successful if the student team can provide us with well-researched recommendations on whether or not Osborne’s Court Advocacy Services is a viable revenue source and, if it is, recommendations for how to implement initial marketing efforts.

She has held various positions with the Court Advocacy Services and she is currently the unit’s program director. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from the Hunter College School of Social Work. Ms. Goupalsingh’s experiences have instilled in her a deep passion for working with the criminal justice involved individual and she is a tireless advocate for increasing the role of social work in the criminal justice system.

This year marks my 4th year selling Cold Roman – an espresso with a natural blend of ingredients. In only a few months into the new year, we’ve branched out from the local farmer’s markets and are now selling our bottled espressos to 4 specialty food stores throughout Fairfield County, CT. Having worked with Stern Consulting Corps this past spring semester, I got a better understanding of my customers and the reasons they buy my product. The SCC project helped me with my product positioning covering the needs of the customers and the benefits the product provides. Moving forward, with the ultimate objective of growth in mind, I now need to understand my target customers in more detail. The objective here is to explore geographic, psychographic, demographic and behavioral aspects of customer segmentation. This is a key for the firm to focus its resources in an efficient manner.

Final project deliverables would include market segmentation analysis for the Cold Roman product line and complete understanding of our customers on the following levels: geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral. The information obtained in the market segmentation would give us an understanding as to why consumers purchase our product and would allow us to develop product differentiation strategies for each of these segments. It would also aid in developing product pricing, tailor marketing programs, and determining our product placement/which retailers/restaurants/bars/cafe/markets we will approach to sell our products.

Donny Raus has been active in the coffee community for 10+

years. Having worked in various capacities, from barista to an

educator and roaster, one thing has always rung true, coffee

and people have always been his passions.

In college he worked for Starbucks and was quickly

recognized for his enthusiasm and interest in coffee. Selected

to partake in the company’s certified coffee specialist

program, Donny became one of the first in the country to earn

the title of "Coffee Master".

After college he took a job in corporate accounting and

brought his coffee with him, literally. Armed with an espresso

maker, drip coffee pot, and a half a dozen single origin

coffees, his office became the meeting spot for company

executives to get a great cup of coffee.

While at Starbucks he started/managed the “Free Pour

Mailing List”, highlighting new products, coffee tasting and

pairing notes, equipment reviews, and subscriber Q&A. He

also spent his time traveling the region presenting “Coffee

Talk”, an educational series on coffee and was commended

by the company’s President of Coffee for his contributions to

the company.

In 2005 he left Starbucks and the corporate world, immersing

himself deeper in the specialty coffee scene. In 2007 he

founded the Connecticut Coffee Society, where he educates

all who want to learn about the magic beverage through

cupping. That same year he was elected President of the

To further this aim, we are planning to enter an East African tech innovator hackathon in 2014.

In its heyday, jazz was the pop music of its time. But the genre has not evolved in a healthy way. Long dead musicians still top the jazz charts. And the genre has become so broad and diverse that it’s difficult for one to even define it. Lost in this shuffle is a group of musicians producing music that is both steeped in the legacy of those who came before them and relevant to today’s cultural landscape. Strick Muzik is committed to developing a new audience for today’s jazz. Originally founded to produce and distribute recordings of jazz saxophonist Marcus Strickland, Strick Muzik is broadening its mandate to expose a larger audience to today’s vibrant urban contemporary jazz musician. Part of this initiative is to transform the organization into a not-for-profit to facilitate fundraising from the public. Another major element of this transformation is to develop a touring music festival that presents artists who comfortably cross the genre boundaries of jazz, soul, and hip hop.

TECHO is a youth led non-profit organization present in 19 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the joint work of families living in extreme poverty with youth volunteers, TECHO aims to overcome poverty in slums. TECHO seeks to build a fair and poverty free society, where everyone has the opportunities needed to develop their capacities and fully exercise their rights. The Social Intervention Model has community development at its’ core and it consists of three phases. TECHO is present in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Project Title TECHO ALUMNI Network

Detailed Project Description – What challenge or opportunity you would like the students to examine.

TECHO is an organization that involves the work of university student volunteers. During their university years, students participate in different ways with TECHO from community programs, to fund raising, events organizing, etc. When volunteers leave school and start their professional careers, they have the will to continue to be involved in the organization’s work, however they don’t have the time to be involved. donors (TECHO Friends), is a possible way for ex-volunteers (TECHO Alumni) to continue to be part of the organization. We need to find the appropriate online platform where TECHO Alumni can find resources relevant to expanding TECHO FRIEND enrollment by the utilization of their professional network across the world.

• TECHO ALUMNI: a person that was involved in TECHO’s operations anywhere in the world. This person includes and is not limited to volunteers, board of director members, former employees, and current employees.

• TECHO FRIEND: program where individuals are given the opportunity to donate in a reoccurring manner. They are allowed to choose the amount and installments on a monthly basis.

The business plan presented works effectively in establishing a platform where TECHO Alumni can be recruited and can obtain tools necessary to enroll new constituents and promote new opportunities.

Background: Brief biography of the project supervisor

Juan was born in Colombia but immigrated to the United States in 1999. Juan studied Humanities and Social Science with double minors in Sociology and Criminal Justice at Cumberland University in Tennessee. Juan has actively volunteered for organizations like the Salvation Army, UNICEF, and Habitat for Humanity. Juan was the project coordinator for Ride for Reading, a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy among children of impoverished communities. Juan is the current Director of Community Giving of TECHO US, he oversee monthly donors and creates new opportunities with community organizations and individuals.

strategic business challenges or opportunities our partner organizations are facing while

applying what they have learned through their MBA coursework. We look for projects that

require thoughtful and actionable recommendations to address complex business issues.

Project Title Entrepreneurial Fellowship Program

Detailed Project Description – What challenge or opportunity you would like the students to examine.

Assistance in developing a 6 or 12 month entrepreneurial fellowship program where start-ups apply for reduced or waived fees for services if they agree to participate in the program. The program would consist of monthly guidance on everything from business and partnership structure to guidance on cyber security, developing business plans, public speaking training, office organization, etc. This complementary guidance is in addition to bookkeeping and other accounting services which would be offered at reduced or waived fees. Fees would be reduced or waived based on the start-ups choice of participating in Entrepreneurship Days which we would hold at local inner city high schools. Entrepreneurship Day would consist of a series of speakers from start-ups discussing their business, how they made the choice to do what they do, what makes them successful, etc. The day would also incorporate activities with the students.

The project will also afford the students the opportunity to help intermingle and integrate the entrepreneurial and start-up community with city youth.
