  • Again you ask, what is it?While it was launched and shipped 3 months ago were not talking about version 1 technology Oracle Collaboration Suite is a set of mature applications based on and integrated with the 9i Database and application server and all their options.These applications include:Email, Calendar, Voicemail, Fax, Files, UltraSearch based on Oracle Text formally known as InterMedia which is a federated search engine all with wireless and voice access.

    Oracle Collaboration Suite offers embedded Oracle database technology to store files, messages and user information, and embedded technology from Oracle's application server to provide a Web server, directory services, and single sign-on capabilities. The application and access layer enables you to find and manage all the information you need to makes it easy to collaborate and communicate more effectively. It eases user administration of email, voicemail and fax by providing one integrated message store with one centralized inbox. It provides voice access to your calendar allowing you to review your schedule and receive alerts when new meetings are created or existing meetings changed. Users can find and access all the information they need with a single user id and password. In addition, Oracle allows users to easily search across all enterprise information repositories regardless of where the information is located. And, Oracle Collaboration Suite integrates with familiar desktop clients and interfaces like Microsoft Outlook and Explorer so no end user training is needed.

    In addition to lower management costs, Carl Olofson of IDC highlights how we can learn about how our business works by examining our data. Carl points out that distributed email and file servers (that do not have central management) invites a proliferation of largely the same data throughout it, as well as data that people save and then forget about. And it just sits there and takes up space. Carl stresses the importance of consolidated management of files and email.

    More DetailHaving a system that has a concept of file exploration, having a system that has a concept of file versioning, having a system that has a concept of file recovery in case of a problem, takes all the issues away from the user, doesnt require the user to go through lots of manual steps in order to have a rational file system, saves disk space and actually makes peoples jobs easier.

    An un-aided file system invites a proliferation of largely the same data throughout it, as well as data that people save in files and then forget about. And it just sits there and takes up space.

    whats really important whether you consolidate the data, whether you consolidate the processing is that you consolidate the management of those things and that you rationalize those things.

    So the question becomes do we or should we consolidate our e-mail into one system? I think as with database, consolidating the management of e-mail makes infinite sense.

    When we consider managing e-mail, like any data that we can manage, theres always the opportunity to mine it for business intelligence. Theres always the opportunity to learn how our business works by examining our data. The better managed the data is, whether its structured or unstructured, whether its in database tables or e-mail, or files, the better managed that data is, the more able we are to learn things from it.

    Does it work? The answer is absolutely. In a recent study conducted by Radicati Group, funded my multiple vendors and measuring real world customer experiences, Oracle beat IBM and Microsoft on total cost of ownership for Messaging by a wide margin.

    This research is on the Lotus.com home page.The Oracle Collaboration Suite uses the Oracle Enterprise Manager for administering the suite. Because OEM is the standard administration tool for other Oracle products as well, administrators do not need to learn another tool for maintaining the Collaboration Suite.

    Shown here are screenshots of OEM managing the Oracle Email component of the Oracle Collaboration Suite. As you can see, administrators can see the health of the system at a glance; drill down to check or change settings for the different components of Oracle Email; and obtain numbers and graphs of system statistics, such as the number of users logged on, the transmission rate of messages, and so on. (These screenshots only partially display the Oracle Email portion of OEM; there is a lot more, but it doesnt fit on one screen.)Oracle Files provides familiar access to content- from Windows to the browser enabling users to collaborate more effectively.     Where does number come from: Meta Groups Senior Vice President, Andrew Wyzecha in 2003: The quantity of content generated by business operations has escalated rapidly, as has the importance of unstructured data. Currently, 80%+ of the information that knowledge workers require is unstructured data. Oracle Outsourcing lowers the ongoing costs, and also provides a level of predictability unattainable through in-house management or through most outsourcers. Oracle customers on average see at least a 50% savings on their costs of managing the software.

    Oracle Outsourcing also delivers better service levels which we will delve into in the next section.
