Background information on Existing railway
• Railway operates over 2,600route-km, comprising sevenmain lines and several branchlines.
• Network is all of single trackwith 1,000mm gauge (85.5%),
1,435 mm gauge and dual-gauge sections.
• VR has two divisions:Transport and Infrastructure
• VR is an independent SOEunder the government

Master plan up to 20201. Development of railway transport:
• Until 2020: Railway transportation should account for 13% in terms ofthe demand on passenger transport and 14% in terms of the demandon goods transport.
2. Infrastructure developmentUntil 2020: Completing the improvement and upgrading the existingrailway network to gain the standardized national railway Grade 1;
completing the linkage of railways with international ports such as CaiLan, Lach Huyen, Van Phong, Cai Mep - Thi Vai, and with industrialzones, mines and tourism areas; striving for the completion of Lao Cai- Hanoi - Hai Phong railway route and Hanoi - Dong Dang railwayroute; connecting with Singapore – Kunming Rail Link.
• For new construction, railways with the standardized gauge 1,435mmshould be prioritized The Hanoi - Lao Cai route, Hanoi - Hai Phongroute and Hanoi - Dong Dang route are to be constructed with thestandardized gauge 1.435 mm.

Ha Noi – Lao Cai Railway UpgradingTotal length: 296 km,
Rehabilitation andupgrading of the section asfollows:
Replacement of superstructure, rehabilitation ofweak bridges, realignmentof some sections, set upsome new stations...
Financing: Co-financing $60M from ADB, $ 80Mfrom the Government ofFrance and $ 20M fromVietnamese Government
with the total cost of USD160 mil. Bidding forconstruction work is underpreparation.
Implementation period: 2010-2013.
Yen Vien – Cai Lan Railway Project
• 130 km long, dual-gaugetrack (1000 & 1435mm) ris under construction,with the total cost of
USD 400 mil.(VietnameseGovernment funding)and is expected to becomplete in 2013

Di An – Loc Ninh ProjectLength: 129 km including 12
stations, from Hoa Lu to DiAn, its P.F/S has beencompleted. Double track,standard gauge,electrification.
- Railway connecting pointwith Cambodia at Hoa LuBorder Gate.
- First Phase: construction of
single track with 1.000mmgauge (embankmentstandard gauge) to connectwith North – South Railwayline.
- Estimated cost: USD 740Million
