Jean Hauser is a tiny woman with a big heart.

That big heart has compelled Jean

to make many generous gifts to St.

Hilary, though she previously insisted

on being anonymous. Now, at age 82,

Jean wants to encourage others to

open their hearts to the Church.

When Jean’s husband died 13 years

ago, Jean joined St. Hilary and made her

first donation. The set of four vertical

stained-glass windows at the back of

the church (to the left as you

enter from the Market Street doors)

was Jean’s first project. The windows

bring light and add solemnity to the

worship space in that area of the church.

A small plaque under the second

window discreetly reveals that the

stained-glass windows are in memory

of Joseph Hauser, Jean’s husband.

Those windows were an appropriate

first gift from Jean.

“We always wanted to share our

wealth because it was God who gave

it to us,” Jean says. Jean and her

husband were founders and owners

of Hauser Products, a successful

electronics company in Akron.

After the windows were installed,

Jean next donated money to pay for seat

cushions for every pew in the church.

That gift to the Church was given anony-

mously. Jean remembers that when the

new cushions were announced at Mass

people applauded.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE:

What inspires you?Is it a beautiful song, an artisticsunset, an unexpected athleticfeat, a job well done? Do youfind inspiration in people? Infaith?

Lately I’ve been thinking aboutthe inspiration we gain from family, friends and faith.I’ve been considering what motivates and encourages usand why. As development director for the St. HilaryParish Foundation, I interact with inspiring people everyday but I couldn’t pinpoint why this work was inspiring.

I’m awed by the work of the Foundation and the Parishfocusing on the future. The Foundation has always supported a positive faith community. Its goals are avibrant Parish and excellence in Catholic education. The Foundation achieves its mission every day, year after year, by raising and granting funds for St. HilaryParish and St. Hilary School.

But it’s faith-filled people who make the Foundation successful. It’s people like the selfless donors who makesacrifices to make gifts. Or those who are compelled toestablish named funds or contribute to the endowmentwith gifts from the heart. These gifts may be large orsmall, to honor people or as memorial tributes, but theyare genuine, and they all are inspiring.

Other people help sustain the Foundation. There are thevolunteer members of the Board, who give selflessly oftheir time and expertise to safeguard the Foundationsassets and carefully distribute grants. These parishionersprayerfully consider the present and future needs of theParish in their deliberations. They are concerned andcommitted, and they are inspiring.

Parish staff and school personnel also support theFoundation. They are willing advisers, always generouswith their time and knowledge. They have a tough jobrecommending which of many urgent projects to fund

and when. They make those tough decisions with deliberate care, and they are inspiring.

For me, these people and their efforts represent“personal best” in a way that professional athletes cannever achieve. These people carrying out the mission ofthe Foundation are as inspiring as any world leader orcelebrity role model.

At Mass, I appreciate the beauty of sacred music. Likeothers, I value the art of a glorious day. I cheer ourteams, our victories and our accomplishments in thecommunity, at worship and in school. And I’m gratefuland inspired to know the work and generosity of peoplein this Parish. Building toward a vibrant future can truly inspire!

Sincerely,Diane Sarkis

PASTOR’S MESSAGE:

Making a differenceFor the past 36 years, the St.Hilary Parish Foundation hasprovided a vehicle for the support of St. Hilary Parish and School that is above andbeyond the standard offertorycollection. While offertory

commitments primarily fund the day-to-day operationsof the parish and school, Foundation dollars are generallydirected toward special projects and needs. Over theyears, donations to the Foundation have been used formajor building projects, several roof replacements, carpetand tile installations, school computers, Mass vestments, rectory improvements, church statue refurbishing, thebell carillon, new church kneelers, pew padding, tuitionassistance, and much, much more!

Many parishioners have shared with me their motivationfor giving to the Foundation. Three that capture theessence of what the Foundation is about are seeingwhere their dollars are making a difference, creating alegacy for their family’s generosity, and ensuring avibrant, solid future for our parish and school.

Seeing Where Dollars are Making a DifferenceSeveral individuals and families have established named funds within the Foundation. Every year, theymake donations to their named funds and help directhow those monies are spent. Whether that money goesto Christmas bonuses for teachers, new carpeting in theparish office, the purchase of items used for Mass, orscholarships for school children, these individuals havethe satisfaction of seeing a direct benefit from their dollars.

Establishing a LegacyDollars donated to the Foundation are placed into funds established for the long term. A named fund, therefore, can continue to

perpetuate the generosity of an individual or familyindefinitely. Dollars given in honor of a deceased lovedone can keep that person’s memory alive for many yearsto come, and can celebrate his or her life’s work or pas-sion. Making the Foundation a beneficiary of your estatecan also ensure that your legacy of generosity to theparish will continue after your death.

Ensuring the FutureBecause Foundation dollars are invested for the longterm, donors can be assured that their generosity todaywill continue to support the ministry of St. Hilary Parishand School for future generations. The largest majority ofthe money held by the Foundation is distributed to theparish and school under guidelines that will preserve theprincipal and allow it to grow over time. When donatingto the Foundation, you really are helping to establish thefuture financial stability of St. Hilary Parish and School, thus ensuring the future vitality of our many parish ministries and Catholic grade school.

With these three motivations in mind, and with gratitudeto all whose past generosity has brought the Foundationto its present strength, I encourage you to consider making a donation to the St. Hilary Parish Foundation, remembering the Foundation in your estate planning, and considering the Foundation at the time of the loss ofa loved one. As many parishioners have testified, theFoundation provides a wonderful and rewarding way tosee where your dollars are making a difference, create alegacy for your family’s generosity, and ensure a strongand bright future for St. Hilary Parish and School!

With Abundant Thanks, Rev. Steven Brunovsky

Crystal Commemoratives UpdateCommitments and pledges are already over 42%,with installation of first set of committed panels in place.

Crystal Commemoratives are unique, individually crafted, etched

and beveled glass panels, installed over the windows in the

connecting hallway between the school and the gymnasium.

They are a perfect way to leave a legacy, remember a loved one

or celebrate a special event.

Three sizes offer a choice of participation levels, with the two

larger sizes featuring bigger typography for the commemoration.

There are 92 6”x 6”panels remaining available for a donation of

$2,500 each, 39 12”x 6” panels remaining available for a donation

of $5,000 each, and only 32 12”x12”panels left available for a

donation of $10,000 each. If all are pledged, these commemorative

panels will help raise over $1,200,000 for the St. Hilary School

Endowment Fund.

The photograph at right shows the first phase of the completed

windows in the connecting hallway. If you are interested in

participating, contact Diane Sarkis at 330-608-4787 for more

information.

Note: Yellow-tinted panels in graphic below indicate committed panels.Actual crystal panels are clear, with beveled edges and etched type.

ST. HILARY SCHOOL :

FoundationSupport is Vital to Our SchoolEach year, the St. Hilary Parish

Foundation underwrites a host of

needs at both the parish and the school. This year, the Foundation

supported many initiatives to help upgrade the school building and

grounds. Projects included the removal of asbestos-backed flooring

and replacement with VCT tile in one of the school hallways, totaling

$8,235, concrete work on school grounds to enhance safety, function-

ality and appearance, at a cost of $7,410,

and installation of new carpeting in nine

classrooms, costing $29,300. Labor costs

were minimized on the carpeting project

through the use of parent volunteers to

tear out the existing carpet and prepare the

rooms for installation of the new.

Also supported by the Foundation this year

were projects to improve school technolo-

gy and enhance curriculum. With

Foundation funds in the amount of $4,049,

a new computer

server was pur-

chased and

installed at the

school. SKITT Kits

totaling $6,918

were purchased to

augment the

hands-on compo-

nent of students’

science classes.

Three additional school-related items were funded through

Foundation generosity in 2011. Students who might otherwise not

have had the opportunity to attend St. Hilary School were granted a

total of $13,000 in tuition assistance. Teachers’ and school staff mem-

bers’ 2010 Christmas bonuses totaling $6,500 were subsequently

underwritten by the Foundation. A $1,000 Kevin Neff Memorial

Scholarship was awarded to current St. Hilary School eighth grader

Ellie Durkin. This scholarship honors the memory of deceased St.

Hilary School alumnus Kevin Neff, and annually recognizes one St.

Hilary School student who exemplifies the ideals Kevin aspired to

during his life.

Your generous giving makes possible contributions like these and

many others from the Foundation each year. Without your support,

our school and our parish would not be able to provide the many

enhancements from which our St. Hilary community benefits. Our

school staff, parents and stu-

dents are especially grateful

for the funding provided by

the Foundation through your

benevolent donations. To

ing to the St. Hilary Parish

ST. HILARY PARISH FOUNDATION GRANT DISTRIBUTIONS FROM 1979 TO 2011Jean Hauser is a tiny woman with a big heart.

She enjoyed knowing she had made it possible for parishioners

to be more comfortable during worship. “That was fun,” she says.

Those endeavors were the beginning of Jean’s generosity to

St. Hilary. Jean then started making contributions through the

St. Hilary Foundation and she subsequently funded repair of the

church carillon. She says she had often heard church bells ring-

ing elsewhere in Akron and she wanted to restore the bell

recordings and carillon at St. Hilary. Later, when the kneelers

needed to be re-cushioned, Jean provided the resources for that

project.

Among other things, she has financed repairs at the priests’

rectory, she helped pay to install a tabernacle inside the rectory

(so priests don’t have to enter the church when they’re called to

late-night emergencies), and she provided new vestments for

Fr. Steve. In all, Jean has given more than $100,000 to the

Church and the Foundation. She also is a member of the

St. Hilary Parish Foundation Legacy Society*, which means that

she has made provisions for the Foundation in her will, ensuring

that her big-heartedness will continue for many years.

Now is the time to release the anonymous donor, Jean

explains. She says she likes seeing her gifts come to fruition and

make a difference for people in the parish. She says she wants

others to know the feeling of happiness she gets from her

donations and contributions.

Jean says it feels good to be able to give back to the Parish

that has given her so much spiritual guidance.

“It would be very nice for other people to do the same thing;

go through the Foundation and share the experiences that I’ve

had,” she says. “Besides,” she adds with a mischievous smile, “it’s

probably getting me into heaven!”

Make the Gift of a Lifetime: IRA Charitable RolloverGreat news for donors 701/2 and older! The Tax Relief,Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of2010 extended the IRA Charitable Rollover into 2011. This legislationallows individuals age 701/2 or older to make direct transfer fromtheir IRAs of up to $100,000 to eligible charitable organizations,including the St. Hilary Parish Foundation, without having to countthe transfers as income for federal income tax purposes. To qualify:• The owner of the IRA must 701/2 years of age or older;• The gift must be completed by December 31, 2011;

This may be of particular interest to you if:• You do not need the additional income necessitated by the

minimum required distribution, or• Your charitable gifts already equal 50% of your adjusted gross

income, so you do not benefit from an income tax charitable deduction for additional gifts, or

• You do not itemize deductions.

We suggest you discuss your options with your financial advisor. Experience the joy of making a major gift by using your IRA assets!

Your St.Hilary Parish Foundation

The St. Hilary Parish Foundation wasformed by our first pastor, Father EdwardHorning in 1976.

The mission of the St. Hilary ParishFoundation is to ensure a vibrant parishlife and the highest standards of excel-lence in Catholic education by raising, safeguarding, and granting funds thatsupport the operating and capital needsof St. Hilary Church and School.

How the St.Hilary ParishFoundation works:

The St. Hilary Parish Foundation includesthe Unrestricted Endowment Fund, St. Hilary School Endowment Fund,18 family named funds and 11 other designated funds.

The Foundation seeks and accepts donations in any amount at any time ofyear. 100% of your contribution to theFoundation helps support programs atSt. Hilary Parish and School.

If a contribution is designated for a specific purpose, the gift is added to thatfund. Undesignated donations are addedto the Unrestricted Endowment Fund. The endowment funds are permanent;that is, the original contribution is addedto the permanent fund and only intereston the funds is spent.

A board of trustees, made up of parishvolunteers and including Fr. SteveBrunovsky, oversees the Foundationendowment, investments and spending.
