PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
It’s hard to believe that the summer is coming to a close. We hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing summer and are ready to get involved in our many exciting community service and fun activities. Our annual pool party at the beautiful home of Marsha Forman was a wonderful event. The weather cooperated and the food, fashion show and vendor were enjoyed by all who attended. Blanket making at FountainView produced many cuddly fleece blankets which will be given to the Family Shelter and to the Prenatal Clinic at Nyack Hospital. We invite everyone to come to a blanket making meeting. The blankets are easy to make and are so important to help women and families in our community. If you haven’t been to a Book Club discussion, you are missing out on a very interesting and fun afternoon. Check the bulletin for the book title and location of our next club meeting. Everyone is invited to attend the upcoming Wine, Cheese and Dessert Party on September 22nd. Details for this and other activities can be found in the bulletin.
September also brings the High Holidays. In accordance with Jewish values, this is a time to reflect on the past year and make a commitment to improve our own lives and the lives of those in our greater community. The holidays also present us with the opportunity to do better in the new year.
National Council is the perfect place to do better by participating in Community Service projects such as: the Rhoda Bloom Food Pantry; Busy Bags; Fleece Blankets and Knitted Toys; Center for Safety and Change activities like Luggage for Freedom. If your interest lies in advocacy then NCJW is the place to participate in supporting women’s rights. We believe strongly in a woman’s right to choose and continue to fight to see that abortion rights are protected.
We look forward to seeing you at our September 4th meeting. The speakers will describe how we are “Still Fighting for Women’s Rights.” This is sure to be a very important and stimulating presentation.
May you be blessed with good health, happiness and prosperity in the New Year. L’Shanah Tovah!

MEMBERSHIP
Would you believe…..it’s almost time to put away the summer clothes and pull out the sweaters and jackets. And…...of course, time to renew your commitment to National Council of Jewish Women, Rockland Section. You should have already received your renewal packet in the mail.
This summer we have been very busy with a pool party, blanket making, and book club meetings. Don’t miss out on the many exciting and interesting events planned for the coming season. Send in your membership renewal today.
Your membership in NCJW helps to improve the quality of life for women, children and families through direct social services, education and advocacy. Through our various programs, we educate, advocate for and assist those in need locally, nationally and in Israel.
Annual Members and Life Members can also contribute to Program Support which helps our national organization lobby for us and promotes our ideals and beliefs. Each section contributes to Program Support so that national NCJW can provide us with educational services, conventions, advocacy in Washington, coalitions with national organizations, brochures, and campaigns for reproductive choice, domestic violence prevention, promote the vote and Israel Grants.
New member? Want to get more involved? Or maybe just find out more about what we do? Just contact any one of our vice presidents who would be delighted to hear from you. Come and be part of the excitement the New Year offers. Fill out the Volunteer Interest Survey on page 5.
Only with your support can we continue to turn ideals into action and be a positive force for change.
Together we can make a difference…together we can make an impact!
We wish you and your families a year filled with sweetness, joy, good health and peace. L’Shana Tova,

FUNDRAI$ING
The 2019 Pool Party at the home of Marsha & Gary Forman is a wrap! There was nary a sighting of an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini, but it certainly looked like everyone had a good time!
“What a difference a day makes” can certainly be the caption for the Pool Party! Wednesday was a splendid weather day…Tuesday, not so much. The swimmers swam; the canasta players were tucked into a cool setting; the tan-seeking guests were treated to a delightful day; many thanks to the raffle prize donors and the raffle purchasers; Chico’s fashion show with our members modeling was fun; Pride Caterers and Marsha Forman planned a delectable menu; and there was a lovely vendor selling beautiful Swarovski jewelry. Something for everybody!
“Perfect” is a challenging word, but it did seem as if the planets were properly aligned the day of the Pool Party. “It takes a village” is a familiar term and is applicable for so many happenings. The efforts of our members and friends will benefit the many we serve in the county and beyond. Thanks to all for this day of having fun in July that will spread goodness into our new fiscal year. YOU ARE THE BEST!!!
On Sunday, September 22nd, 2PM, we are planning a Wine, Cheese, & Leave Room for Dessert Social at the home of Elaine & Martin Hirsch, 14 Hazelwood Road, Sloatsburg, NY. (Rain date: Sunday, October 6th) Detailed directions will be sent before the event. Please bring wine or cheese, or dessert; let us know what you are bringing. Cost per person: $10. Come alone, with your Spouse, or Significant Other. Shalom,

DeCicco’s Community Rebate Program
Here’s how NCJW can benefit from your shopping at DeCicco’s in New City. Use your DeCicco’s rewards card when you check out, but BEFORE the cashier begins, tell him/her that you want your reward points to go to National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). You still get all of the sale prices for your groceries, and NCJW gets points that will turn into a donation
from DeCicco’s. Don’t have a rewards card? Sign up for one at the service desk.

Clarkstown Pharmacy Rebate Program
By doing your pharmacy shopping at Clarkstown Pharmacy, you can enable NCJW, Rockland Section to receive a cash donation. Here's how it works: Obtain your Clarkstown Pharmacy Community Rewards Card free-of-charge. Specify NCJW as the community organization to receive reward point credit. Present your card each time you make a purchase at Clarkstown Pharmacy. NCJW receives a percentage of sales.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
The chief goals of National Council of Jewish Women are to improve the quality of life for women, children and families. How do we do this? Sure, money is important, but actual hands on activities offer the opportunities to see the assistance to people in real time. The Rockland Section of NCJW has many projects that members perform in the community. Here we describe only a few of them.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Fight for $15 Minimum Wage
The federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009, and the tipped minimum wage has been frozen at $2.13 since 1996. The Raise the Wage Act (S 150/HR 582), introduced in the House by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) and the Senate by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2024. The bill would also index the minimum wage to a median worker’s wages going forward, ensuring workers would not be grossly underpaid again and end unfair exclusions for tipped workers, people with disabilities, and youth. No one working a full-time job should be unable to afford the essentials for living a full life. NCJW can make a difference! Call Representative Nita Lowey at 202-225-6506 and encourage her to join the fight for $15 minimum wage by passing the Raise the Wage Act. Here’s a sample script: My name is [name] and I’m a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and I live in [city/town]. The federal minimum wage is only $7.25 and hasn’t increased in ten years. Right now, a person earning the federal minimum wage cannot afford a 2-bedroom apartment in any county in the United States. This disproportionately affects women and people of color, who are more likely to work minimum wage jobs. As a Jewish person guided by the value of tzedek, or justice, it’s important to me that my friends and neighbors are able take care of themselves and their families. I urge you to pass the Raise the Wage Act (House bill 582) and vote against any amendments that would weaken the bill. Thank you. This bill was passed by the House of Representatives . Urge the Senate to pass it as well.

WOMEN’S ISSUES
Anti-Abortion Bill Introduced in NY
Another Fetal Heartbeat Bill While many of us know that the Reproductive Health Act was passed on January 22, two days after the legislature was sworn in and many years after being blocked by Republican members, an anti-abortion bill (A05389) was introduced in February of this year by Assemblyman David DiPietro, Republican from Erie and Wyoming Counties, and co-sponsored by five Assemblymen also from upstate New York. It was referred to the Health Committee.
In the face of calls at the federal level to weaken abortion rights, the RHA maintains abortions as legal within 24 weeks of the start of a pregnancy – “or at any time when necessary to protect a woman’s life or health.’’ Late-term abortions had previously been authorized under state law if they meant saving the life of a woman.
The measure expands access to abortions by authorizing other health professionals – beyond physicians under a 1970 state law that came three years ahead of the landmark Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision – to perform abortions. The new anti-abortion law would:
require testing for a fetal heartbeat before
performing an abortion (and we thought this
could not happen in NY);
establish standards for informed consent;
expand the definition of medical professional
misconduct to include certain acts of abortion
and authorize certain sanctions for violations;
criminalize the performance of an abortion
under certain circumstances;
establish the joint legislative committee on
adoption promotion and support;
provide for certain remedies in the event that
the Supreme Court of the United States
overrules Roe v. Wade;
and authorize the commissioner of the dept.
of public health to promulgate certain rules
and regulations.

NCJW Calendar Journal
Dedicated to our 70th Anniversary
I was just sitting at our wonderful successful pool party and realizing we have to plan for next year’s Calendar Journal. As I
am, once again, so privileged to chair the Calendar Journal Committee for 2019/2020, I am, of course, kindly sending you my usual requests. This is going to be a special year as we are dedicating the entire Calendar Journal to our 70th Anniversary, so everyone has an opportunity to make their donations for this special occasion. I will be needing volunteers to help mail out the letter requesting ads and donations, helping put the journal together, and preparing it to go to the printer. Once printed, it must be sent to our members which means I will need help for the mailing. MOST IMPORTANTLY - We need advertisers. The more advertisers and well-wishers we have the bigger our profits and ability to increase funds to NCJW community projects and programs. The greatest help is if you can hook onto advertisers. Looking forward to having another very beautiful calendar and very successful fundraiser. Please give me a call or e-mail me if you would like to help (and I will be calling you).
