Criticised by an art school lecturer as having “a remarkable eye for trivia” Chris Wood’s love of small things has made him one of England’s most vivid and arresting song writers. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. Hollow Point is his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezez and Wood’s feel for the sheer “one thing after another-ness” of life allows us, for the first time, to see the event through the eyes of the victim.

Joan Armatrading presented Chris with the 2011 BBC Radio Two Folk Singer Of The Year Award before inviting him as special guest onto her Autumn 2012 tour. They played 51 cities, and Wood found himself eavesdropping on conversations from pound shops to tea rooms, army recruiting centres to hotel saunas collecting the poetry of recession. His response is, None The Wiser, a fourth solo album released in Summer 2013. With humble hymns and sweeping statements from Alzheimers to William Blake, Wood lovingly takes the pulse of his homeland in what could be his best album yet.

Wood has worked and collaborated with a long list of artists, most recently Dizraeli, Billy Bragg, Eliza and Martin Carthy in Simon Emerson’s Imagined Village. His duet with Eliza added to the “Villagers” winning another Folk Award for “Best Traditional Song”.

The Irish Times dubbed him ‘the renaissance man of English folk’ because his work extends beyond song writing into commissions for Radio 3 Between The Ears, Late Junction and The Essay. He has written for The Times and lectured at Newcastle and Limerick Universities. His setting of Blake’s Jerusalem features in Paul Gilroy’s lecture on poetry and music at Kings College London and Wood’s lyric Walk This World With Music is included in Michael Morpurgo’s latest collection.

Dyma ‘Canwr Gwlad y Flwyddyn’ ar Radio 2 yn perfformio ar ein llwyfan ni, yn cynnwys casgliad o’i ddamhegion cyfoes a baledi rhynllyd, gydag urddas

OPRA CYMRU follows last year’s highly successful productions of Macbeth and Barber of Seville, with a new Welsh-language version of Tchaikovsky’s great operatic masterpiece Eugene Onegin. Onegin is a dissolute snob who derides his friendship with the young poet Lensky, and patronizes the romantic dreamer Tatyana for passionately declaring her love to him. Through his wilfulness and arrogance, Onegin kills his best friend and loses his one true love. OPRA CYMRU gives this moving tale the company’s unique ‘open-plan’ treatment under the leadership of new music director Jâms Coleman. For this performance only, local choir Cantorion Rhos also plays a supporting role. NB: The school performance is a shorter version of the public performance, and the choir are not participating in it.

Yn dilyn llwyddiant ysgubol Macbeth a Barbwr Sefil y llynedd, mae OPRA CYMRU yn mynd ar daith eleni gyda fersiwn Gymraeg newydd o gampwaith operatig Tchaikovsky, Eugene Onegin.Mae’r crachwr anfoesol Onegin yn gwatwar ei gyfeillgarwch â’r bardd ifanc Lensky, ac yn trin y freuddwydwraig ramantus Tatyana yn nawddoglyd, am ddatgan ei chariad tuag ato. Trwy ei styfnigrwydd a’i hyfdra, mae Onegin yn lladd ei ffrind gorau ac yn colli ei unig wir gariad.Mae OPRA CYMRU yn ymdrin â’r stori ingol hon mewn harddull ‘cynllun-agored’ dan arweiniad eu cyfarwyddwr cerdd newydd, Jâms Coleman. Am y perfformiad hwn yn unig, bydd y côr lleol Cantorion Rhos yn chwarae rhan ategol.NB: Mae’r perfformiad i’r ysgol yn fersiwn byrrach o’r perfformiad i’r cyhoedd, ac ni fydd y côr yn cymryd rhan ynddo.

DYLAN THOMAS UNDER MILKWOOD: A Reading

Dylan Thomas’ famous play for voices is brought to life through a live reading performed by local actors in the original format of the New York production of 1954.

This special one off production will journey through the silent cobbled streets and sloe black fishing boat bobbing seas of the fictional Llaregyb.

Drama enwog Dylan Thomas i leisiau, yn dod yn fyw drwy perfformiad byw o ddarllen gan actorion lleol, yn y fformat gwreiddiol.

Mae’r cynhyrchiad arbennig hwn yn teithio drwy strydoedd coblog tawel y dref ffuglennol, Llaregyb.

DYLAN THOMAS FINAL JOURNEYTAITH TERFYNOL DYLAN THOMASStarting in Dylan Thomas’s “lovely, ugly” home town of Swansea, this acclaimed one-man play, staged in the great poet’s centenary year, follows him through some of his journeys to his final journey to New York in 1953, where he died.

We see him leave Aberystwyth in the pouring rain to start his project of walking through Wales. The mission is aborted after a couple of pints and the sighting of a queen rat. We then travel with him to the ‘insane city’ of London, which he claimed ‘smelled of goat’. In the capital he meets Caitlin and several members of the drinking literati. In New York he is chased by a secret detective and finally collapses after proudly announcing he has drunk 18 whiskies, which he believed was the record.

The play is both comic and tragic and gives an insight into the tortured life of a writer who could not decide whether he wanted to live with Caitlin or another woman, write poetry or plays and live in America or Wales.

Peter Read is an actor and prize winning author, both as a playwright and poet. He has performed as Dylan Thomas throughout Britain and America, performances which have won him five star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival in two consecutive years.

“It is testimony to Read’s script and performance that a one man show can conjure up the presence of (Dylan’s) women so convincingly. We are able to see how they shaped his life and he theirs.” Derek Webb, Theatre in Wales

“Dylan’s text is wonderfully expressive and Read can speak it beautifully” Jenni Williams, British Theatre Guide

“…the words tumble from Read’s mouth like diamonds. Theatre this exquisite is a rare thing indeed” Ruth Cameron, Fest Magazine 5 Star Review

“Peter Read as Dylan Thomas is a fabulously hypnotic performer whose passion and enthu-siasm for his subject is self-evident. This superlative production knocks similar efforts into a cocked hat” Graham Williams, South Wales Evening Post

“Peter Read brings Thomas so completely to life in his one man show that he sparkles. Catch this while you can, you really will be missing out if you don’t see it. Brilliant.” 3 Weeks, 5 Star Review

Gan ddechrau yng nghartref Dylan Thomas, Abertawe, mae’r drama un-dyn enwog hon, ym mlwyddyn canmlwyddiant y bardd mawr, yn ei ddilyn trwy rai o’i deithiau at ei daith olaf i Efrog Newydd ym 1953, lle y bu farw.

Four couples, three bedrooms, two celebrations, one blazing row and an illicit kiss (or two). Alan Ayckbourn’s ingenious comedy shines a brilliant spotlight onto the trials and tribulations of suburban marriage.

Trevor and Susannah, whose marriage is on the rocks, inflict their miseries on their nearest and dearest: three couples whose own relationships are

tenuous at best. Taking place sequentially in the three beleaguered couples’ bedrooms during one endless Friday night of co-dependence and dysfunction,

Future For BeginnersMatthew and Bethan share a dream of growing old together - to be the type of couple who can say everything with just a look. They plan every day of the rest of their lives in great detail - to future-proof their future. But there’s a problem, a schism that could bring their world tumbling down around them.

Created by Liveartshow’s Martin Constantine and Alan Harris, co-produced with Wales Millennium Centre, with new music by Liveartshow’s Harry Blake.

‘Inventive, impressive, striking... An eccentric gem’ Time Out

‘Uncompromising eccentricities... An astonishing oddly moving success’ Guardian

Sky HawkSky Hawk is Gill Lewis’ debut novel. It has been nominated for a total of 23 awards to date and has been published in 25 languages.

The story revolves around two characters, Callum and Iona, who discover that a rare bird, an osprey, is nesting in their farmland. They make attempts to protect it but the bird becomes injured just before its annual migration to Gambia. However, they succeed in placing a tracking device on the bird, and so begins a natural and electronic adventure as they follow the bird on its migration. When the bird’s signal disappears in Gambia, a frantic internet search reveals a companion to them in the character of Jenaba, a Gambian girl.

Gill Lewis is thrilled that Clwyd Theatr Cymru Theatre for Young People are taking Sky Hawk to a wider audience.

Could you... LEND A HAND?We’re not asking for money, we simply want to know if you have at least one hour, every three months, to help YOUR local theatre.

Don’t worry if you don’t know what to do or think that you don’t have the necessary skills, we need people from all sorts of backgrounds and it’s never too late to learn! Of course, we need people who will cut the grass, clean the windows and paint the doors but there are also more exciting roles such as assisting backstage, stewarding, helping with sound and lighting...the list is endless.

Volunteering at the Stiwt is really good fun, all you need to to do is just call 01978 841300 or email [email protected] for more information.

So what are you waiting for, stick your hand up and be counted and if you’re looking for a reason to volunteer at the Stiwt then we have one for you...because you can after all it’s your theatre!
