“I remember the days when I couldn’t hear the phone ring, my grand kids laughing or carry on a conversation with my husband. I had to finally admit to myself, it was time to get a hearing aid. Then I met Joe Mutter and the war was over. Joe is a Hearing Aid SPECIALIST, sent to me by God. I think about all of the money I wasted on these other hearing aids and it just breaks my heart. done it on our own, but we’re very excited. The kids and the parents are thrilled,” she said. The team will be performing a

jazz-inspired routine, to the tune of “Ramalama (bang Bang)” by Roisin Murphy, Colon said. The studio’s director, Bruna Mo-

PORT ST. LUCIE — Richard Jove took over as director of the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Insti-tute of Florida more than a year ago, and it has been a time of challenges and hope. “It’s been very exciting, a great

ride,” Jove said. “There’s been a lot of promise and a lot of chal-lenges. The biggest challenge has been the sequestration.” The budget sequestration of

2013 cut funding from govern-ment agencies, including the National Institutes of Health. “We felt the impact immedi-

ately,” Jove said. “Within a few months, we were losing major grants that didn’t get funded. The challenge has been finding new sources of research funding because of dramatically reduced NIH funding.” The upside of the new position

has been the progress made in research to find preventions and treatments of illnesses includ-ing cancer, influenza and other viral diseases and side effects of aging. VGTI Florida recent-

ly announced the launch of its Center for Diseases of Aging, an initiative to discover ways to boost aging immune systems and deal with illnesses that affect the elderly. With an in-vestment of $3 million from the State of Florida, VGTI Florida researchers will collaborate with medical scientists from Sweden’s famed Karolinska Institutet on these programs. Karolinska In-stitutet is the body that awards the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. For Jove, the new initiative is

in keeping with the needs of the area in which it is located. “I felt we needed to be relevant

to the state of Florida,” he said. “We want to have the greatest positive impact on the taxpayers. “Taxpayers are supporting this

research and they have a right to know what we’re doing and a right to insist it be helpful to them. Heck, it’s their money. Aging is a chronic disease we all have.” The researchers will collabo-

rate on areas that include car-diovascular disease, cancer im-munotherapy and degenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. In the

heart, it might mean replacing or regenerating damaged heart tissue after a heart attack. “The goal is not necessarily

to live longer but to improve the quality of life and productivity as we age,” Jove said. Among the possible treat-

ments is the use of lab-gener-ated, genetically-modified stem cells. “You take the stem cell and by

adding a combination of genes, it has the capacity to become anything — a heart or a brain,” Jove said. “You put it back into the patient once it is repro-grammed to be a heart or brain cell. It repairs and regenerates damaged tissue. This is a major approach of the future and one I find most interesting.” Jove has a doctorate in mo-

lecular biology from Columbia University and did post-doctoral work at Rockefeller University. His field is viral oncology and cancer research remains his passion. Research is ongoing in the search for vaccines for breast and ovarian cancer, both as prevention and to prevent recurrence. “What’s been happening is

that the field has been making a lot of progress in boosting the immune system as a response against tumor cells,” Jove said. “There are checkpoints, like the (PD)-1 molecule, that block an anti-tumor immune response. We must regulate the check-points to allow the immune system to attack the tumor. Tu-mor cells have a stealthy way of

Editor’s note: Your Voice News & Views invited candidates in local races to tell voters why he or she is the best candidate for the offices they’re seeking. Some chose not to respond. Information from candidates who responded appears on the next several pages.

Your Voice News & Views encourages readers to exercise their Constitutional right to choose their representatives. Please vote between now and Election Day, Nov. 2.

My name is JoAnn Faiella. Like you, I am a caring member of our community- a member who is passionate enough to be your voice and strong enough to live under the microscope of con-stant scrutiny. I am confident I remain your best choice for mayor. Why am I the best choice?

Because I’m not a politician, and I don’t let politics interfere with decisions that are in the best in-terest of our residents and busi-ness owners. When I first won election, I upset the political insiders and their plans of suc-cession. I remain amazed at the number of attacks and fabricat-ed lawsuits, which I must point out, have either been dismissed or found “not guilty.” These are

nothing more than calculated attacks by my enemies. As your mayor, I prefer to stay focused on moving Port St Lucie forward. During my first term, I voted

not raise your taxes on multiple occasions because we have to be more efficient with our budgets, not just continue to throw more of our taxpayer dollars at every problem. I opposed sober/detox homes

JoAnn Faiella: candidate for Port St. Lucie Mayor

See FAIELLA page A10

In August’s primary election, 77 percent of voters cast their ballots for a new mayor, sending a clear message that we need change. Thanks to great community sup-port, we won the primary by a 2:1 margin; and, as we approach the runoff on Nov. 4, our growing team and I are working as hard as we can to earn your vote again or for the very first time. I want to go to work for you because I’m inspired by what we could be-come and believe that if we had the right leadership and values; if we utilized strategic planning and good decision-making; if we worked together and were ac-countable, we could make Port St. Lucie a great place to live, learn, work and play — a city for all ages and all people. I appre-ciate this opportunity to share a vision for our future and some of the reasons to vote “Oravec for Mayor.” reasons which include values, qualifications and proven leadership. Values are more than just

words. They’re the foundation of a good life and should be the foundation of good government. I believe in hard work, excellence, integrity, service and accountabil-ity, and my dedication to these values has been proven through 18 years of living in the fishbowl of public service and is reflect-ed in the number of community leaders supporting my candidacy. Please allow me to restore these values to the mayor’s office. I graduated cum laude from the

honors program of the University of Miami where I studied marine and political sciences. Before graduating, I began a career in local government which has spanned the last 18 years. In my appointments as a city planner, redevelopment director, assistant city manager and city manager, I have learned the ins and outs

of government, prepared $100 million budgets, managed more than 1,000 employees and proven that I can successfully lead large groups. With your help, we can put

these values, qualifications and leadership to work on a platform that will deliver our vision for our community. We can:• Lower taxes, reduce debt and

be an award-winning, safe, clean and beautiful city.• Transform the challenges of

City Center and Digital Domain into new jobs.• Partner with our neighbors

and sister governments to create jobs; improve our schools; build sidewalks; promote a university and Mets Stadium; preserve our agricultural and natural areas; and save our River. Can you imagine what our city

will look like when we successful-ly implement this platform? I can, and I would like to work with you to make it happen. In one year as your city manager, I was able to draft a budget which lowered your tax rate, increased financial reserves, put police officers back to work and made capital projects like the Southbend Roundabout and Fairgreen Road Extension come to life even though others said it couldn’t be done. Imagine what we could do in a four-year term! To learn more or to share ideas,

please visit www.OravecForMay-or.com or call (772) 342-6072. Thank you! Greg Oravec is a candidate for

mayor of Port St. Lucie.

Dear, St. Lucie County residents: Thank you and Your Voice

News & Views for allowing me to address you in this forum. I am seeking re-election to the Flori-da Legislature in District 84 to continue to positively impact the lives of St. Lucie County resi-dents. For 35 years, working in the

St. Lucie County community to make it a better place has been my passion. I have been involved in community organizations such as the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, Avenue D Boy’s Choir, St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Heath-cote Botanical Gardens, Leader-ship Florida, Parent Academy, Boy Scouts Troop 772, and the Roundtable of St. Lucie County. My experience as a local busi-

ness person, my civic community involvement and my willingness

to listen to differing views has always been assets. Those assets were both useful and import-ant during this past legislative session. I worked across the aisle in a bi-partisan manner to help address issues and develop solutions. I am proud to have worked

across the political aisle to address solutions to the mas-sive discharges from Lake Okeechobee that continually threaten the St. Lucie River. I was appointed by the Speaker of the House to be one of three House members to work with a select group from the Florida Senate to address issues relating to the Indian River Lagoon and to develop a plan to be funded

by the Legislature. I am happy that, along with other local Leg-islators, we were able to secure additional funding to address this threat. I will continue to work with both parties, the Riv-er Coalition and all interested citizens to protect our natural resources. I am proud to have advocated

for funding our new research industries and for providing literacy programs in our poor-est communities. I am also proud to have played a leading role, working in a bi-partisan manner, to ensure that St. Lucie County will be the home of Florida’s seventh veteran’s nursing home.Last term, I served on the Flor-

ida House Regulatory Affairs Committee as well as the Agri-culture & Natural Resources, Education Appropriations and Insurance & Banking Subcom-mittees. While on the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee, we worked on a bill that de-populated Citizens Insurance Company. This bill encouraged insurance companies to return to Florida, thereby increasing competition which is expected to make property insurance more affordable and available.

While we made progress, there is more that our committee can and plans to do.I believe that education is the

key to success in life. St. Lucie County is where my wife of 36 years, Alice, and I raised our daughter, Tasha. Alice worked 32 years as an educator in the St. Lucie County School District. Tasha is a graduate of Lincoln Park Academy and recently completed her PhD in neuroscience. I know and appreciate the value of a public education and educators. It is essential that in Florida, we provide our children a quality public education, our educators with meaningful support and our graduates with employment opportunities. I love St. Lucie County, and I

pledge to work with members of our local delegation to bring jobs to St. Lucie County. In closing, I ask not only for

your vote but also for your sup-port by joining me as we work together on community and state issues.

Rep. Larry Lee is the current state representative for District 84. He is seeking re-election for a second term.

My name is Rob Siedlecki, and I am running for the Florida State House in District 84, which cov-ers large parts of Port St. Lucie (including all of St. Lucie West) and Fort Pierce. I am running because I want to finally bring effective leadership to our district and use my state and federal gov-ernment experience to benefit our residents. As for my background, I moved

to south Florida when I was 8 and graduated from high school here in 1987. After graduating from Harvard College (B.A. 1991) and Cornell Law School (J.D. 1995), I practiced business law and donated much of my free time to helping nonprofit and other community organizations. I then had the privilege of serving for almost six years in the federal government at the Administra-tion for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Task Force for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives at the U.S.

Department of Justice. Upon completing my federal service, I served for almost five years in state government in Florida and Kansas as a Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Chief of Staff of large health and human service departments. I managed billion dollar budgets and thousands of employees and was able to save taxpayers millions of dollars by implementing tough anti-fraud, waste and abuse initiatives, elim-inating non-performing contracts, and holding government provid-ers accountable for producing the goods and services they prom-ised. Some of the issues I want to

focus on if elected are bring-ing more and better jobs to our area, improving the condition of our fragile environment and

protecting our seniors and veterans. Histori-cally, St. Lucie County has always had higher unemployment rates because of our dependence on the tourism and construction industries; to bring more and better jobs to our area, we need to diversify our economic base with more high tech and biomedical jobs, give stronger support to Enterprise Florida (our state’s public/pri-vate partnership that works to have out-of-state companies relocate or expand in Florida), bet-ter promote medical tourism in our county and cut our state’s corporate income tax rate. As for the environment, we need to better protect the Indian River Lagoon, the St. Lucie River and our other water resources as our public health and our boating, fishing and recreation industries depend on them. We need to stop the discharges of polluted water from Lake Okeechobee (which reached over a billion gallons a day last year), and we need to clean up the damages already caused by such pollution. Importantly, I will fight to protect and support our seniors and vet-erans. Our seniors are entitled to the state and local benefits that have earned, whether Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, and I will do all I can to make sure they get them. As for our veterans, they are served our country to allow us to live in freedom, and we must do all we can for them. In particular, I will fight for their right to the receive the medical they need when they need it, rather than wait years, or even die, before they get help. So I humbly ask for your support this Nov. 4

or if you vote early or by mail. I will do all I can bring effective leadership to our area and with your support, I can win. Thank you and God bless.Rob Siedlecki is a candidate for Florida’s District

in our neighborhoods because, while we must have places for people to get help, our family neighborhoods are not the place. I also opposed refinancing the Digital Do-

main debt. I voted to turn it over to private investors who could have sold it off and generated revenue for the city instead of throwing more of our tax dollars at a prob-lem we should never have been stuck with. My opponent would have you believe he’s

a sharp, dedicated professional who can get the job done. Take a look at his work histo-ry and that story falls apart. While work-ing for the city he left three times; twice because he didn’t get his way and once so he could raid his retirement account only to get rehired one week later. Mr. Oravec’s resume shows he held eight jobs in 11 years before joining the city as assistant city manager. You don’t want a quitter as mayor, someone who is quick to act out and ill-tempered. I am not a quitter and through everything that has been thrown at me, I am still here. I worked with law enforcement and leg-

islators to create Brittany’s Law. (Editor’s note: Brittany’s Law allows law enforce-ment authorities to hold a person charged as a sex offender or sexual predator until

his or her first appearance in court instead of being released on bond, allowing author-ities time to look into the suspect’s history leading up to the arrest.) I helped bring large retail business to our

city and worked with commissioners to get the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs to select our city for its newest nursing home. Many small businesses have made Port St Lucie their home, as well. This has created and will continue to bring living wages, long-term jobs to our city so we can grow with confidence. I’ve helped move Port St. Lucie in the right, “quality of life,” direction. Last July, Forbes.com named our city the

8th Best City for Job Growth in the coun-try, one of the 25 Best Places to Retire and one of the 200 Best Places for Business & Careers. Unemployment was 14 percent in 2010,

and now it’s 7.2 percent and dropping. We have the lowest crime rate for any Florida city with a population over 100,000 people. Visit my website for more at www.VoteFor-Faiella.comThere’s still much work to be done. A vote

for me will ensure that we keep our city moving in the right direction. JoAnn Faiella is Port St. Lucie’s current

mayor and is running for her second term.

I know the value and rewards of hard work and the gift of the American Dream. I completed active duty service

as a Naval Officer in Vietnam and retired as a Commander. I built two successful companies, creating jobs and opportunity for the Palm Beach Treasure Coast region. In 2002, I was elected to the

Florida House, where I introduced “portability,” allowing homeown-ers transfer their property tax benefits to a newer property. I was the only elected official to stand firm against Governor Crist and the Digital Domain fiasco.

- Carl Domino

Carl Domino, candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, District 18

As a native Floridian, I under-stand the importance of protect-ing our environment, which is why I’m so proud to have secured $38 million to help clean our Indian River Lagoon and $12 million for local beach renour-ishment and inlet dredging. I am also focused on using my CPA and small business experience to get our nation’s fiscal house in order, putting forward bipartisan legislation to cut $330 billion in wasteful government spending. I remain committed to building a brighter future for Florida’s 18th district, serving as an indepen-dent voice for our community.

take in future community talks — the first being six months away — and also increase its social media presence.“We’re getting heavily involved in our use of

social media,” Yost said. The district is using Facebook more to con-

nect with businessmen and women. Accord-ing to the district’s statistics, 85 percent of the district’s Facebook activity comes from women. Twitter engagement has garnered mostly

businessmen viewing the district’s tweets, Yost said. Some skeptics said the district has not done

enough to get its message out. That may be because the district may not

be fully-equipped to get that message out. It does not have any public information spe-cialists to focus on spreading the message full-time, Yost said. Voss & Associates, a marketing company based in Dallas, handles public outreach for now.Yost said there may be one hired in the

Joe Negron, candidate for the Florida Senate, District 32I am asking the citizens of Dis-

trict 32 to give me the opportunity to continue to represent them in the Florida Senate for one more term. I will continue to advocate for funding and policies that lay the groundwork to treat, store and clean water south of Lake Okeechobee. I will also vote to protect our constitutional rights and safeguard our individual lib-erties. I know the priorities of the Treasure Coast and will always fight for our interests in Tallahas-see.

-Joe Negron

Voting is one of the greatest of all privileges. Please permit me to make a case for a vote cast for me. I am a native of Fort Pierce, who is seeking office for the reasons such endeavors were intended. It should be a sincere exercise in humility. With issues that need attention outside the scope of special interest influence and constituents of every kind, it is a requirement to act in the best interest of the entire district. I will work tirelessly to represent you fully and faithfully. Please vote Bruno Moore for District 32 State Senate on Nov. 4.

It’s been an honor to serve as your council member. I’ve fought to keep your taxes

During my six years as Chairman, the district has made great strides in accomplishing its mission: im-proved stormwater management, extended and improved potable water supply, extended and im-proved wastewater treatment facilities and assuming additional responsibilities from (Homeowners Associations) – all without raising rates.Improved working relations with

other agencies has had prolific results.Governing the St. Lucie West

Services District is a team effort. We have built a conscientious, efficient team at the district. The residents of St. Lucie West will be well-served by keeping this team together. I have the experience, qualifications and record to war-rant re-election.

-Harvey L. Cutler

Harvey L. Cutler, candidate for the SLW Services District Board of Supervisors, Seat 2

I have a business administration degree and have been attending meetings for 17 years. I am up to date on what is going on in the district. The district has a bond debt reaching $60 million and now wants to get into the real estate business and pay $4.4 million to buy land for a pond and park. This will not help our flooding problems. We need new leadership to be

accountable to the people of St. Lucie West. Please elect me as your supervisor for St. Lucie West Services District Board Seat No. 2.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Despite having los-ing records, St. Lucie West Centennial and Fort Pierce Central High School are each looking to secure playoff spots going into the final week of District 8-8A play. Each team is 1-1 in the district, following

their Oct. 17 matchup in which Central (3-4) defeated Centennial 42-6. Both teams have a week off and will resume playing on Oct. 31.Following the win, Central head coach Josh

Shaffer said the team has had a relaxed week because of the bye week. Central’s odds are in their favor, going into

their Oct. 31 clash with Treasure Coast High School, which hasn’t won this season.“We’ve got to play good defense, and we’ve

done a good job at that,” Shaffer said. Central held Centennial (2-5) to 123 total

yards on offense in their matchup and held Centennial running back Basil Bradshaw to a season-low 9 rushing yards. The key though, will be keeping offensive

sabotaging the immune cells. “There are multiple regulatory

pathways that tumors disrupt. Some are intrinsic to the tumor and some extrinsic. With the intrinsic ones, cancer genes or oncogenes like HER2 get turned on, like the accelerator on a gas pedal, and the tumor suppressor genes get turned off. Mutations in the genes like the familiar BRCA 1 and 2 inactivate and deregulate them and accelerate breast and ovarian cancers.” Immunotherapy is intended

to let the body’s own immune system generate an immune response. One such treatment, Herceptin, is already in use for certain breast cancers where the oncogene HER2 is overex-pressed. The tumor is overexpressing

HER2, but the immune cells are no longer recognizing the tumor cells,” Jove said. The brakes are off. With immunotherapy, the immune cells would recognize the overexpression and would attack that.” The standard of care for

breast cancer is chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Keith Knutson, a cancer researcher at VGTI Florida is working on a synthetic vaccine targeted against HER2.

“Keith’s vaccine is ideal for a clinical trial after the standard of care treatment for the primary tumor, Jove said. “Cancer im-munotherapy is still experimen-tal and while it shows tremen-dous promise, it is hard to tell someone not to take the stan-dard of care. Trials will see if the vaccine prevents metastases. It can be used, not only as preven-tion, but when other treatments have failed. Keith is now talking with various hospitals and com-panies that can support trials to start doing Phase II trials that test efficacy. We’re planning to do it in hospitals and clinics in Florida. It’s well on its way to ex-panded trials. It’s very exciting. I’m very hopeful about Keith’s vaccine. I expect we’ll hear a lot over the next several years, a lot of good news.” It was impossible to talk with

Richard Jove and not ask him about the current Ebola situa-tion and the misunderstandings about vaccines that have made parents choose not to have their children vaccinated against com-mon diseases of childhood. “One of the things that’s hap-

pened in recent years is that vaccines have fallen in use,” he said. “The fears have not been scientifically or clinically prov-en. When people don’t get vac-cines, they are not only putting

themselves at risk but others. They are the best way to control infectious diseases. People have irrational fears, and they are hurting themselves and society as a whole. “Vaccines are the single great-

est impact as a therapeutic mo-dality on the health of humans in the history of humankind. It’s saved more lives. (It’s important) to get a flu shot. They’re very safe and 40,000-50,000 people die unnecessarily every year from the flu in the United States. If one person doesn’t get it, that person can infect many others.” While Ebola is not his field of

expertise, Jove said that there is research going on for a vaccine. “It’s normal to overreact when

there’s fear,” he said. “People (feel) they can’t protect them-selves, and it’s a normal human reaction. There’s a lot of re-search going on and Obama has just appointed a czar. Things will move after a slow start. It shows the importance of feder-al funding. Nobody cared and nobody funded the research. Now that it’s closer to home, it’s a good example of why we need to put funds into emerging viral areas.”

mistakes to a minimum, as the team did during the Centennial matchup, Shaffer said. “We need to come away with

touchdowns when we’re in the red zone. We can’t settle for field goals, and we can’t turn the ball over.”Shaffer will be back on the side-

lines against Treasure Coast after serving a one-game suspension after getting ejected from an Oct. 10 game against Mandarin High School for getting two unsports-manlike conduct penalties from arguing calls. He said he won’t be more re-

served, though.“Absolutely not. In fact, I’m even

more passionate about it than before. (The referees) don’t like to be questioned, so they didn’t appreciate that,” he said.

Tough road ahead

Centennial has a tougher task, on paper, going against first-place district foe Vero Beach High School (7-0, 2-0 in district play).Centennial head coach Ron

Parker has had a different ap-proach than Shaffer, having the team practice in full pads during the bye-week.“We’re just trying to make sure

we are up on our responsibili-ties,” he said. “We made it hard on ourselves.”

Some blown coverage assign-ments made it hard to stop Central’s passing attack, which accounted for 279 yards in their last game.“If somebody’s breaking down

on defense and not doing what they’re supposed to, then you’re making it harder on everyone else,” Parker said. The team also had problems

running in the correct lanes when rushing the ball on offense, Park-er said.Despite the last game, Parker

said practice has gone well and he feels good about the matchup against Vero Beach because of the effort from his players.“They’ve been on time, they’ve

worked hard and have done ev-erything we’ve asked them to do.“Last year Javid (Ellis) had 217

rushing yards against them, so we feel pretty good,” he said.Ellis, the team’s starting quar-

terback, said, while it was nice to have a nice game on the ground in last year’s 37-33 loss to Vero, he wants a win.“We need a win … we need to

pick up blocks better and com-plete more passes so we can move the ball down the field,” Ellis said.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A local real estate company is among the best at getting homeowners the maximum market exposure when they decide to sell.According to statistics submitted

by real estate companies in 2013, The Keyes Company, based in Miami and with a branch along Southwest Gatlin Boulevard in Port St. Lucie, was a part of the top-selling real estate group, bringing in $314 billion. The group, called Leading Real

Estate Companies of the World, edged out bigger companies like Coldwell Banker, RE/MAX and Prudential. Mike Pappas, the company’s

president, said the company’s connection to a larger conglomer-ate of real estate companies helps customers get the most exposure for their homes while still feeling

like they are dealing with a small, family-owned business.“That’s what we are. We’re a

large, regional, family-owned business,” he said. “That network, though, can attract buyers from all over.”Deb Shockley, Port St. Lucie

district sales manager, said Keyes posts homes on more than 900 websites to get buyers’ attention.“We want to make sure our list-

ings are positioned in the market-place,” Shockley said. “We know that nearly 90 percent of buyers start their search online before they talk to a Realtor.”Keyes has 35 branches across

south Florida and has been in business for 89 years. Today, it has about 2,400 associates. Lo-cally, the company has about 40 associates, but is looking to grow to 80-plus in Port St. Lucie, with a potential future office targeted along Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard.

The expansion would coincide with a rebounding market, Pappas said.“We’re bullish on south Florida.

There are 700 people moving here every day. We’re out of the great recession, so we’re seeing a growing market and that allows us to grow,” he said.Other ventures have allowed the

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The upcoming play at the Pineapple Playhouse has a head-shaking title. The Steve Franco comedy, “In-Laws, Outlaws & Other People (That should be Shot” will be pre-sented Nov. 6-23. Dawn Achin, president of the

Pineapple’s board and the play’s director, said it was chosen for several reasons. “I was the chair of the

play-reading committee last year. We were researching some new-er shows and the name caught my eye. How could it not? It was published in the last few years and was written by Steve Franco, a high school drama teacher from Virginia. It’s exciting for us to be able to stage a new show that hasn’t been done in the area.” The play takes place during a

family Christmas Eve dinner. Two inept robbers burst in and hold the family hostage.

Family comedy speaks to all

Photo courtesy of the Pineapple PlayhouseThe cast of the comedy, ‘In-Laws, Outlaws & Other People (That should be Shot)’ rehearse a scene at the Pineapple Playhouse. The play will be presented Nov. 6-23 at the theater in Fort Pierce.

“It’s a big, loud, raucous family comedy,” Achin said. “It’s about blood family, neighborhood family and the family of friends. That’s what attracted me to it. The theater becomes your family. It all ties together, especially at the holidays.” In this show, family dysfunction

is on display, front and center. The feeling many have when they go home for the holidays is taken to a new level. “Taking the family hostage on

Christmas Eve is now real,” Ach-in said. “Everyone is aware it’s about family. The biggest goal is to get the audience someone to identify with and elbow each oth-er. It’s definitely something we’re looking forward to, having people say, ‘Yes, this is my family. This is how we are.’” The show itself is a family affair,

with two sets of relatives. Rose-mary Knight, who had the lead in “Funny Money,” is Bunny Nester and her son, Danny, is one of the

neighbors. “We also have newcomers, sis-

ters Kelli and Tiffani Kinnaman, who play Beth Douglas and Emily Wakowski. A little less than half the cast is new to our stage. That’s something I love to see. I love to expand that part of our family. The rest of the cast includes

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Bob Car-ey, executive director of Sarah’s Kitchen of the Treasure Coast, is pleased to announce that Sarah’s Kitchen has received a $10,000 grant from The Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation. “On behalf of all of our vol-

unteers and guests, we thank Dunkin› Donuts & Baskin-Robins for their generous gift. Without support such as this grant, we would not be able to continue our efforts to feed those in need. In spite of the signs of economic recovery, the majory of our popu-lation is still struggling financial-ly. Sarah’s Kitchen has seen an increase in the numbers of meals we serve each month,” Carey said. In 2013, Sarah’s Kitchen

served over 53,000 hot nutritious meals, and they expect that num-ber to be in excess of 60,000 by the end of the year. Sarah’s Kitchen is an inter-

faith organization that believes people should put aside doctrinal differences and share God’s love

TREASURE COAST — Unveil-ing a unique and special focus on the local community, PGA Country Club will transform into the open-to-the-public “St. Lucie Trail Golf Club” beginning Nov. 1. The facility and golf course, originally designed by Jim Fazio in 1988, will continue to be owned and operated by the PGA of America, upholding the same maintenance stan-dards as nearby PGA Golf Club. St. Lucie Trail Golf Club has

undergone a tremendous re-vitalization program to its tee boxes, fairways, greens and landscaping over the past 18 months, under the direction of Superintendent Dick Gray, a

protégé of Pete Dye. According-ly, golfers now have the ability to play a picturesque, 18-hole course for the best value in the local marketplace. “The PGA of America is ex-

tremely proud to unveil St. Lucie Trail Golf Club, as golf-ers from the local community and surrounding counties can now enjoy unparalleled public access to this beautiful course,” said Jimmy Terry, PGA general manager for St. Lucie Trail Golf Club. “In addition, the course will serve as a national testing ground for player development programs originated by the PGA of America, in order to further grow the game, both here in St. Lucie County and across the country.” St. Lucie Trail Golf Club also

features a new logo, which pays homage to the local community by incorporating a warm and welcoming green-colored trail.

Rounds will range from $49 in the summer to $89 during the winter season. In addition, an annual, golf-only “Preferred Player Program” that offers unlimited access for $1,995 for a single player and $2,995 for a family (husband, wife and chil-dren under 17). Memberships to PGA Golf

Club will continue to offer access to four courses — the Wanamaker, Ryder and Dye Courses at PGA Golf Club, in addition to the new St. Lucie Trail Golf Club, which is locat-ed at 951 S.W. Country Club Drive, in Port St. Lucie. PGA Golf Club will also remain open for both public and resort play.

North 17th Street in Fort Pierce. Cooper’s play depicts Zora’s life,

her literary achievements and her final years in Florida. Actors will bring back the Harlem Renais-sance period of the 1920s, when Zora won several awards for her writings published in black maga-zines. She also participated in the Federal Writers Project in Florida during the 1930s, collecting the history of blacks. Many of those interviews are included as stories in Zora’s books. Her most famous book is “Their Eyes Were Watch-ing God,” published in 1937. Finally, Zora returned to Florida

in the 1950s, where she worked as a maid in Miami, in a flow-er shop in Belle Glade, at the Patrick Air Force Base Library and finally arrived in Fort Pierce

at the request of C.E. Bolen, the publisher of the local black newspaper, The Chronicle. While in Fort Pierce, Zora was a ninth-grade English teacher at Lincoln Park Academy and wrote articles for The Chronicle. Cooper has coordinated a Zora

exhibit at the Agape Senior Cen-ter on North 9th Street in Fort Pierce. It was formerly known as the St. Lucie County Welfare Home and is the location where Hurston died. The center is in-cluded on the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail. Use of the library meeting

rooms does not imply library en-dorsement of the aims, policies, or activities of any group using the room. The play is funded by a non-

profit organization, St. Lucie County Agape Seniors Recre-ational Center.
