ST. LUCIE WEST — Golfers eager to make par on the PGA Country Club course can’t play the game until fall, but the wait will be well worth it, course pros said. The course will be closed un-

til Oct. 1 because of a massive capital improvement project to the turf on all 18 holes, Chris Donahue, head golf professional at PGA Golf Club, said. The club’s Wanamaker and Ryder courses underwent the process within the past five years, Donahue said.“We decided back in Febru-

ary to replace all of the greens. It’s a pretty normal thing to do. About every 10 years, you replace greens,” Donahue said. The project began close to two

months ago, Donahue said. It includes replacing all 18 greens, the practice putting green and the driving range turf. The time-consuming process includes removing 20 inches of turf and dirt and replacing it with new-and-improved soil and grass. The project will improve the course’s health and improve play.

“It gets rid of all of the contami-nation,” said Donahue, who add-ed the course will be installing high-quality Tiff Eagle grass. “It gives a better and truer putting surface.”The course, which lies just

beyond the gates of the Country Club Estates, was created by acclaimed course designer Jim Fazio, and is noted for its small greens and already fast putting surfaces. The course contains 10 holes with water and more than 80 bunkers that provide an added challenge to the relatively narrow fairways, according to PGAVillage.com.Other amenities at The PGA

Country Club include a refur-bished clubhouse complete with a fine dining room, grill room for quick items including burgers and sandwiches, full-service golf shop and men’s and ladies’ locker rooms. Also included are five Har-Tru tennis courts, a swimming pool and spa, the site states.Donahue, who didn’t disclose

the project’s cost, said members are excited about the October tee time.“The members are dying to

get out there,” Donahue said. “They’re very excited about it.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — In an effort to eradicate invasive plant species from St. Lucie West, the Services District voted overwhelmingly in a 4-1 decision to approve an agree-ment that will allow Florida De-partment of Corrections inmates to complete the task.Historically, district staff has

been responsible for the remov-al of exotic plants from dis-trict-owned wetlands, wetland buffers and upland pine pre-serves. To help with the under-taking, the district has occa-sionally contracted the work out every two to three years to private contractors, district staffers said. Contract costs for 40 to 60 days of work ranged anywhere from $75,000 to $100,000.Under the parameters of the

contract, a five-man inmate crew and supervising officer would work approximately 250 days a year at a little more than half the amount of the private contractor. The year-long contract is worth $65,122. Pending state approval, work is expected to begin in Au-gust, staffers said.“Over time, we’re going to spend

about the same amount of dol-lars, but we’re going to see more of a benefit, because they’re going to clean more preserves,” district manager Dennis Pickle said. Two district employees would be

trained in criminal justice stan-dards to assign work and relay safety aspects of using power equipment, the contract states. A vehicle, radio and cell phone will also be provided by the district. Pickle said similar inmate pro-grams are a success in St. Lucie County, Martin County and the

Local businessman helps those in need

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — It was the hug heard around the world. President Barack Obama came into Big Apple Pizza & Pasta in Fort Pierce during the 2012 campaign, looking for owner Scott Van Duzer. Van Duzer, a big man, embraced the president and lifted him off the ground. The photo and story were carried from California to China. “It wasn’t staged,” Van Duzer

said. “I wasn’t in the store. I’ll never forget. It was Sept. 9. He was in Melbourne and we got a call that he would stop by if I would be there. He wanted to thank us for our community service.” Van Duzer rushed back to the

store, arriving just before the president. “It was very cool,” Van Duzer

said. “The convention was a cou-ple of days earlier. He (came in) and said, ‘Where’s Scott?’ I said, ‘Here I am, sir.’” Then he said, ‘You’re the biggest pizza man I’ve ever seen. Will I get as strong as you if I eat your pizza? ‘I said, ‘You want to see strong…’’’ That’s when he lifted the pres-

ident off the ground. The chief executive took it in stride. “What a great guy,” Van Duzer

said. “He’s a caring family man. We were invited to a debate and sat next to the first lady.” Van Duzer was being honored

for the work of the Van Duzer Foundation, an organization he founded that helps families in need in St. Lucie County and raises awareness about the need for blood donations. Still, the hug showed him a different side of people. There were bomb threats and hate mail.“I saw the good side and the bad

side,” he said. “I was on the An-derson Cooper show and talked about the Foundation. There were 11,000 online donations of $24,000 from all over the world. I’ll take the hate any day. We used that money to help those in St. Lucie County. A lot of the ha-tred was nationwide. I don’t think it was local.”Van Duzer began in the pizza

business in 1983, with a summer job.“I’ve had one job my whole life,

with Big Apple Pizza,” he said. “I started out washing dishes and now I’m the owner. It was a cool place to work in the summer. I started in high school. My mom told me if you like what you do,

you never work a day. It’s like ‘Cheers’ here. Everyone knows who you are. I like making pizza and I like the people.”Van Duzer, who lives in St. Lucie

West, began the Van Duzer Foun-dation in April 2008.“We wanted to help people,”

he said. “Eighty percent of the families we’ve helped had health crises.”

The Foundation is known for its blood drives. He is, in fact, the first Ambassador of Florida’s Blood Centers.“It started with a little boy who

needed blood daily,” Van Duzer said. “We included a blood drive with the fundraising. Now we’ve learned that every two seconds,

laws, Pickle said. The major draw is how low the district could pay per acre, said Pickle, who added the district is going to explore how much acreage they need and where it would mitigate land. It’s projected each acre would cost about $26,000, Pickle added. “We’re going to go back to the

city once we come back with all

of these designations,” Pickle said. The only snag is the city and

county are embroiled in a dis-pute about the annexation and are set to hold a county-initiat-ed conflict assessment meeting for July 17 to hash out their differences. Both municipalities maintain

rated due to the disagreement. “We’re looking forward to meet-

ing with the city staff and we’re hopeful, of course, that we can resolve any issues that we have,” said county attorney Dan McIn-tyre, who said the county is “just trying to determine what they’re proposing to do with it and what the effect on the county is.” “I think from the county’s per-

spective, we have a pretty good relationship with the city,” McIn-tyre said. Interim city manager Jeff

Bremer maintains the city has no hidden agenda of turning the land into residential development.

He added no bridges with the county have been burnt. “It’s an issue of disagreement. I

mean, are the relations strained? I don’t know,” Bremer said. “I’ve heard that there has been strained relations in the past and we’re certainly not looking for-ward to embarking on a strained relationship.” The county would like the city

to use the parcel under the coun-ty’s jurisdiction. McCarty Ranch is not adjacent to Port St. Lucie for a large part of its boundary. It’s only connected to the city by a 650-foot strip of land, county officials said. The city contends since it owns

McCarty Ranch, it should be their sole responsibility to control it.

“Our position has been we own it, we’re going to annex it and we’re going to rezone it,” Bremer said. “That makes it easier for us to control the use of the property through our own zoning and our own processes, rather than have to deal with others, like the coun-ty, for example.” The city said McCarty Ranch

will be a pivotal parcel for the 400,000 customers expected to live in Port St. Lucie by 2060. “It is really to provide water for

our residents for the next 50 to 100 years and to provide some solid conservation and recreation-al usage for the property,” Bremer said. “Those are our two main goals and they remain our goals.” The city’s plans for the property

will also benefit the environment, Bremer said. “This provides us an opportu-

nity to really take water that’s coming from Lake Okeechobee, for example, treat it and use it for future water use,” Bremer said. “It’s almost like a reuse of wasted water.” It also provides an area for new

and exciting recreational activi-ties, Bremer said. “If you’ve seen the property, it’s

awesome in terms of recreational opportunities,” Bremer said. “It’s part of an old mining operation, so there are large areas of water that can be used for kayaking. I even know a couple who have been out there for fishing and they say the fishing is great.”

Meet Your St. Lucie MetsJayce Boyd – First Baseman ST. LUCIE WEST — The year St.

Lucie Mets first baseman Jayce Boyd is having in 2013 can be summarized in two words: He’s raking. Before being promoted to St.

Lucie, Boyd enjoyed a breakout first half with Class A affiliate Sa-vannah, hitting for a .361 average, with five home runs, 46 RBIs, 16 doubles, 35 walks, .441 on base percentage and a .494 slugging percentage through 65 games. Those lofty numbers earned him a spot in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. Although his St. Lucie numbers

come at a much smaller sample size, Boyd is on pace to his Sa-vannah performance. At the time of press, Boyd is hitting for a .393 average, with three home runs, and 12 RBIs through 15 games with St. Lucie. While he isn’t walking as much (just one walk) and his on-base percentage isn’t as high (.413), Boyd does have a higher slugging percentage at .639. “I usually try to hold myself to

high standards on the field, but the success has been way more than I expected this season,” Boyd said. Boyd was selected by the New

York Mets organization in the sixth round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft from Florida State Universi-ty. However, it wasn’t his first time being drafted. The Texas Rangers selected

Boyd in the 19th round three years earlier straight out of high school, but the then-third base-man chose to take his talents to Tallahassee and play collegiately for the Seminoles. Looking back at his decision, Boyd has no regrets. “After you get past the initial

shock and experience of getting drafted for the first time, you kind of sit back and look at the whole picture,” Boyd said. “I’m extremely happy with my decision. I don’t think there was a right or wrong choice. “But going to school, I definite-

ly matured more as a baseball player. I learned a new position. I went to Florida State as a third baseman and ended up moving to first. I played fairly well at that position and ends up that’s where I got drafted.” In his junior season at Florida

State, Boyd helped the Seminoles advance to the 2012 College World

Series. After losing to the eventual National Champion University of Arizona in the National Semifinal, Boyd had a short and hectic four-day turnaround to report to his first minor league assignment.Without an offseason at his

disposal to train for a long sea-son, Boyd was slow out of the gate in his assignment with Class A- Brooklyn. He battled just .239, with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 54 games in a Cyclones uni-form. Boyd believes having time and a

winter to work on strength train-ing is the best possible explana-tion behind his first two years as a professional baseball player. “When I went through my

season in Brooklyn, I was a little tired and sluggish coming straight out of college,” Boyd said. “It was a long season, but afterwards, I finally had an offseason and a couple of months to hit the weight room and get stronger. I can defi-nitely tell and feel the difference for sure.” Boyd doesn’t expect to be hover-

ing around Ted Williams territory for the remainder of his time with the St. Lucie Mets, but whether he continues his success or not, like many players lucky enough to put on a uniform, he just appreciates the opportunity to reach the base-ball mountain top. “Just given the opportunity to

play in a professional organization is something I’ll never take for granted, whether I make it out of high A-ball or not,” Boyd said. “It’s just awesome to be a part of this. “It’s an amazing feeling to be

chasing this dream and to know that you are getting closer with each step you take.”

cities of Fort Pierce and Stuart.Board Chairman Harvey Cutler

said invasive plants, Brazilian pepper trees in particular, have been a thorn in the district’s side for decades. Brazilian pepper trees belong to a vegetation family that includes poison oak and poi-son ivy. There are over 700,000 acres in Florida infested with the tree, which originates from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.Brazilian pepper trees produce a

dense canopy that shade out all other plants and provides a very poor habitat for native species, eventually damaging or killing them, according to the website of the Center for Aquatic and Inva-sive Plants, an arm of the Univer-sity of Florida. People sensitive to poison oak and ivy may also be allergic to Brazilian pepper trees and experience respiratory problems when the tree blooms in September, the website states. “I know myself from previous ex-

perience that you cannot keep up with these exotics,” Cutler said. “It’s one of my peeves.”With the new contract in place,

Cutler said staff can possibly focus their work on other district needs.“That would maybe free up

some of our guys to work on the landscaping which they’ve neglected because the exotics get ahead of them all the time.”During the board’s recent

meeting, Country Club Estates resident Gregg Ney acknowl-edged the contract’s benefits, but

voiced some concerns.“My problem is just that if

they’re going to be working in our community, that they not come close to our residential ar-eas,” Ney said. “I’m ambivalent, but in general, I think it’s proba-bly a good idea. It’s a cost-saving measure.”The board and district staff as-

sured Ney inmates from Martin Correctional Institution will not perform work near homes.“We were assured that where

they would be working would not be in residential areas,” Cutler said.Inmate crews would be pro-

hibited from working inside any H.O.A or within 1,000 feet of any school for the first year of the contract. They may be allowed within H.O.A’s and closer prox-imity to schools on the second year pending approval from the district, according to the agree-ment signed July 2.Pickle said violent felons will

not participate in the program.“According to what we’re told,

these are not hardened crimi-nals. They’re more the DUI cases or the I guess ‘low crime’ cases, as it was explained to me,” he said. The only dissenting vote be-

longed to board supervisor Sal Mancuso, who sees no reason to cease using district workers or local contractors.“My concern is not who does the

work, or who we subcontract to, but we have been doing exot-ic (plant removal) since 1987,” Mancuso said.

ment with a health care manage-ment specialization. The students’ projects includ-

ed: working with the St. Lucie County School Board to develop a plan on emotional eating for school district employees; a team review of Interdisciplinary Com-munication Strategies in a Clin-ical Setting for Sebastian River Medical Center; working with Indian River Medical Center to review Quality Assurance Mea-sures for Arterial Blood Gases and a project with St. Lucie County Communication Services to assess transportation needs of people with disabilities. A capstone project is the final

project IRSC bachelor’s degree program students complete, re-quiring them to work as “consul-tants” with an assigned business or agency to address a specific issue or problem defined by the agency. The scope of the proj-ect is agreed upon between the agency and the supervising IRSC faculty member. IRSC faculties provide guidance to the students throughout the project, and the business or agency provides a staff member as the capstone coordinator for the organization to work with the students.

someone needs blood and 44,000 people would have to donate blood to meet the need. “We recognized that there’s a

serious problem and we have ‘Be a Hero Day’ to underscore that there’s a crisis all the time. Unless a family member needs it, it’s not at the top of your list. Someone, somewhere does need it. We never want there to be a shortage.”Van Duzer does extensive work

with the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County, inviting summer campers to make pizzas. He was that organization’s 2009 Man of the Year. He represented South Florida at the national Jefferson Awards for Community Service and was named Outstanding Small Business Philanthropist by the Association of Fundraising

Professionals. Van Duzer is married to Dawn,

a critical care nurse. He has two sons, Scott and Jordan, and a stepson, Joseph. Joseph is still in school, but the older boys work in the store. He plans to keep mak-ing pizza and to continue to help county residents in need.“We’ll continue to try to make

St. Lucie County better for the less fortunate,” he said. “There’s nothing better than helping oth-ers without expecting anything in return. If we work together, we’ll be a lot better as a community and a nation.” Big Apple Pizza is located at

work for a university in North Carolina, Bremer said. It has also had a hand in developing a town in Connecticut, Bremer said. Bremer said the buyer

plans to turn the now defunct 115,000-square-foot animation studio into either a furniture manufacturing plant or a culi-nary office with retail space. A third option is an art museum with revolving exhibits, Bremer said. “He hasn’t divulged all of his in-

terests to us,” Bremer said. “He’s simply demonstrated the where-withal to purchase the building and have the backing in order to make one of those three areas come to fruition.” Councilman Ron Bowen said

since the city will not partner with the new buyer, as it had with Digital Domain, there is no need to know how the building will be used as long as it complies with zoning laws. “It’s not a public-private part-

nership, so I don’t care what the guy does with the building, as long as it’s not illegal (or) it’s not bringing the moral standards of the city down.” “If he pays $14 million in cash,

he could do what he wants to do with the building,” said Bowen, who added, “It’s time to sell the building. It’s time to cut our loss-

es short.” Vice mayor Linda Bartz echoed

Bowen’s sentiment. “As long as it falls into the

basic city criteria, zoning and all of that, they own it and once they own it, they have the ability to do what they want with it,” she said. “It’s a pretty dynamic building and someday they will turn it around and make some really good money on it. In the mean-time, they will be paying those taxes.” Last year’s unexpected closing

of Tradition Studios was expected to cost the city $3.4 million in an-nual debt costs. A portion of the first installment was due this fall if the building didn’t sell. The $14

million sale will lower the city’s debt to $1.4 a year, which will be paid annually until 2041, Bremer said. The city expects to receive an

estimated $75,000 a year from taxes paid on the building, city attorney Roger Orr said. The rest of the tax dollars will go to the county, Orr said. Should the purchaser file for

bankruptcy after closing, it is un-clear how or if taxes will be paid on the building. “There are too many variables to

answer that question,” Orr said. The $39.9 million building,

which opened in January 2012, was constructed with millions in city incentives and promised a thriving economy and 500 jobs by 2014. That pact was broken when Digital Domain filed for bank-ruptcy in September, laying off more than 300 employees, leaving the city to foot the enormous bill. The property has been appraised for $13.5 million, according to city documents. “We fell for it, we trusted and

we did what we had to do back then and now we’re paying for it,” Mayor JoAnn Faiella said. “Are we going to do the same thing? Absolutely not.” Since the building went on the

market in December, the city has

received six to seven offers, but none panned out, Bremer said. “It’s a clean sale. It is perhaps

and by far the best of all of the proposals that have been re-ceived and reviewed with the help of the (Economic Development Council),” Bremer said. “This one doesn’t require us to come for-ward as a joint partnership. This doesn’t require us to (get into) leasing the facility ... it presents us with what could be the best of the worst.” Berger contended the deal

needs more thought, especially during a time when the market is mending. She suggested possibly retaining the building for future city use. “I’m just not quite sure what

the rush is to move forward so fast in a changing market,” Berg-er said. “Based on the informa-tion we’re receiving, the market is changing in a positive direction.” “Additionally, why would we do

that with risk of not knowing ex-actly who these partners are that are moving in?” Councilwoman Shannon Mar-

tin said the time to sell is now. “Councilman Bowen is correct.

We’re not going to get the return on the investment,” Martin said. “The market is not going to come back to where this property is worth the construction cost. It probably won’t happen for many, many years.”

Irish music enlivens a hot summer evening

TREASURE COAST — The Rowdy Micks hope to have you dancing in the aisles. The band, which plays traditional Celtic music, will appear at the Blake Library on July 25, as part of the inaugural Sounds of Summer Series. The band, with some changes,

has been together since 2002. Current members are Rowdy Carlton on guitar and vocals; Mick Geever on pennywhistle, flute, pipes and vocals; Kathy Port-Zogran on violin; John Mill-roy on bodhran, banjo and vocals and Peggie O’Neill on violin. Kathy Porter-Zogran, a social

worker and violinist with the group, spoke about the music they all love to play. “Peggy and I are both trained

classically and played the violin in orchestras,” she said. “I was in an Irish band in the Berkshires in Massachusetts and I came with musical arrangements put

together. We all have input. John and Mitch have a whole library of music in their heads.” The group plays everything

from bawdy drinking songs to heart-tugging ballads. The music of Turlough O’Carolan is a favor-

ite. “He was an instrumentalist, “

Porter-Zogran said. “There are no song lyrics. He was a very interesting Irish musician. He

works hard trying to make ends meet, but she always finds time to help others. She is suffering from ocular

melanoma and is in need of a host of surgeries for life-threaten-ing health issues, including cata-racts, herniated discs, and a knee replacement, but on Wednesday, July 17, the Van Duzer Foun-dation and Joyce’s co-workers are coming together to have an evening to REJOYCE and share the gift of love and support with this kind woman who is always there for others. Come out. Share a hug. Eat dinner, donate blood, and REJOYCE! As always with a Van Duzer

Foundation event, 100 percent of

all the evening’s sales, including staff salaries and tips, will benefit the family. Also on hand for the evening’s festivities will be One Blood (formerly Florida’s Blood Centers), accepting donations of blood to help others who are struggling with illness. Each and every blood donation can save up to three lives, so volunteering is the highest form of volunteering, and it doesn’t cost a cent. For the past five years, the

Van Duzer Foundation has found unique ways for everyone to positively impact the community and has raised and donated over $700,000 to St. Lucie County residents in need. For additional information on

was blind and managed to travel around. If he was captivated by you, he wrote a song about you.” The group will play tradition-

al songs such as “Danny Boy,” and songs like “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” and “Take Me Home Again, Kathleen.” “Mick is the most Irish of us,”

Porter-Zogran said. “He refers to them as New Irish-Ameri-can tunes. They were written in America for people remembering the homeland. A lot of people, especially the World War II gener-ation, like to hear these kinds of songs.” For Porter-Zogran and her

colleagues, the band has become more than a group of musicians. “We all have full-time jobs,

except for John, who is a retired firefighter. It’s a hobby for all of us. We love it so much and we have become great friends. Irish music is all we’ve ever played together. It’s been my focus since I left college. “It was an opportunity to play

with a contradance band, which is traditional English dancing, to Celtic music, similar to square dancing. I didn’t know the wealth of material out there. People know the same songs. You can sit in with a group of strangers and you all know it. We all hope to go

to Ireland together and play in the pubs.” Although many of the songs

are audience favorites, the group doesn’t stand pat. “We’re always trying to add new

material,” Porter-Zogran said. “We have an extensive set list to keep it fresh. (The show) is upbeat, with some storytelling, too. Mick is quite a storyteller, in the true Irish sense of the word. Hopefully, people will get up and dance.” The Rowdy Micks play at Shin-

digs in Port St. Lucie several Sundays a month and are also available for private parties and weddings. “A couple had a blind date at

Shindigs and they had us play at their reception,” Porter-Zogran said. “John played at his own daughter’s wedding.” The Rowdy Micks appear at the

Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Mon-terey Road, Stuart, July 25 at 6 p.m., as part of the library’s Sounds of Summer Music Series. The concert is free and tickets are not required. For more informa-tion, call (772) 221-1403 or visit the website, www.library.martinfl.us. The Rowdy Micks appear at

Palm City Grill II a dining delight

ST. LUCIE WEST – When you dine at Palm City Grill II in St. Lucie West, it’s a good idea to pace yourself. If you don’t, there’s a good chance you’ll fill up on the delicious home-baked bread, served with a dipping sauce of melted butter and garlic. It would be a shame to do that, because

you would miss out on some wonderful food. My dining companion and I started off with an appetizer of Portobello mushrooms, stacked tall with eggplant Parmesan and layered with chunky marinara sauce and mozzarella and ricotta cheese. A balsamic glace was drizzled over it. It looked like a

dessert and was enough for a meal. Other appetizers include Palm City escar-

got, calamari chipotle, lemon garlic mus-sels and jumbo coconut shrimp. Appetizers range in price from $5.95-$12.95. Soup, including the special New England clam chowder, is $2.50 a cup and $3.75 a bowl.We each had a house salad that was crisp

and fresh. All of the dressings are home-made; I had vinaigrette and my friend had the house dressing, a dill ranch. She said it was light and zesty, with a little tang. One of the most popular entrees at the

restaurant is the horseradish crusted grouper, but my friend and I opted to eat from the Sunset Specials menu, available

from 4-5:30 p.m. Two dinners, with bread, soup or salad, potato or vegetables and beverage, are $22.95. I had pan-seared salm-on, served with a side of dill, and fresh vegetables. My friend had baked stuffed shrimp with vegeta-bles.The presentation was lovely.

The vegetables, obtained locally, were fresh and steamed. Carrots, squash and onions were a colorful foil for the pink salmon, cooked just right. It’s very easy to over-cook salmon, but this was perfect. My friend said that the stuffed

shrimp was also perfect. Served in

a casserole dish, the shrimp were stuffed with a seafood stuffing and cream sauce that included bread-crumbs and crackers, crab and butter. It was as rich as it sounds.Other entrees on the Sunset

Specials menu include eggplant Parmigian, coconut shrimp, sirloin steak and stuffed basa. Justin Blodgett is the general

manager of the restaurant, which is part of the Prawnbroker Group that owns five restaurants on the east coast of Florida and several more on the west coast. He began his career 15 years ago as a cook and worked his way up. Many of the employees have been there for years and there is a family-like at-

GRILL from page 23

mosphere. While the restaurant is a success, Blodgett is not content to stand pat.The restaurant has begun serving

prime ribs for $16.95 on Saturday night and is inaugurating Friday night steamed Maine lobster at $17.95. While they keep signa-ture entrees like the grouper and appetizers like Palm City escargot, they are not afraid to add some-thing new and see how the diners receive it.My friend and I did not have wine

or beer, but the restaurant has a nice wine list and serves a variety of draft beers. We also did not have room for dessert, but could have chosen from key lime pie, chocolate peanut butter pie, choc-olate cake, Florida orange sun-shine cake and heated brownies

a la mode. I have no doubt each would have been delicious. On its website, the restaurant

says “We serve it fresh or we don’t serve it at all.” That was certainly our experience. I hope to have the opportunity to dine there again and sample something else. For more information about the
