Christmas Flowers A big thank you to everyone who helped to decorate Stockton Church for Christmas. The Christmas flowers looked wonderful and the beautifully decorated Christmas tree added to the whole atmosphere of celebration! It was lovely to see the Church full of colour. The knitted nativity scene created by the knit and natter team also reminded us on the whole Christmas story. Many thanks to you all. Wendy Turner & Rachel Knight, Churchwardens

VE (VICTORY IN EUROPE) DAY - 8TH MAY 2020 The government has moved the May bank holiday from Monday 4th May to Friday 8th May to coincide with VE Day that celebrates 75 years since the end of the war in Europe. The parish council has called a meeting of the main village groups to share any ideas about how we can mark this event in the village. Nationally it is regarded as a three day event on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These village groups have been contacted individually but any villager is more than welcome to attend the meeting and contribute their ideas at 6.30 pm on Monday 17th February in the village hall (this is before the parish council meeting at 7.15 pm.)

Stockton FC & CC At Stockton FC & CC we are looking to raise funds to aid in the extension of our existing clubhouse. We currently have football, netball, petanque, cricket, darts, dominoes and pool teams which has led us to outgrow our current changing room set up. With this in mind I would like to take this opportunity to offer you or your company the chance to have a sponsorship board on our soon to be installed car park fencing. With the amount of sports that we have, this offers a great opportunity to get your company noticed as there are over 150 people passing through the car park every weekend. If this is something that you would be interested in then please see below: Sponsor boards 2000mm x 600mm with your design on 1-year sponsorship = £200 + VAT 2-years sponsorship = £300 +VAT Plus, the cost of board and branding = £85 + VAT Please contact Luke on 07710864192 for any further info Thanks again for your support

STOCKTON PARISH COUNCIL Meetings held every 3rd Monday in Village Hall 7.15pm.

Full copies of approved minutes available from Clerk to Parish Council Mr. W.J. Robinson Tel: 01926 814094 or

website .www.stockton-warks-pc.gov.uk

STOCKTON PARISH COUNCIL - JANUARY MEETING These are only informal notes. For a full record please refer to the approved minutes on the parish council website. Warwickshire County Council matters - Cllr. Andy Crump reported that he had allocated funds from his highways budget for road safety improvements at Greaves cottages and Stockton crossroads. He would also find more funds from next year’s budget. He was continuing to press Stagecoach over the punctuality of the 63 service and also the poor communications with passengers. It was pointed out that the Stagecoach app can be downloaded onto mobiles phones and this shows the exact position of each bus. Charge for Green Waste Bin - Cllr. Louis Adam reported that he was still objecting to the lack of consultation on the proposed charge of £40 per bin. If the charge is implemented it will take effect from June 2020 and all households will be contacted. Village Facilities: Damage to verges in Manor Road - Cllr. Adam was asked to take up the matter with Orbit to get them to repair the damage. Dog mess - several complaints have been made about the increase in dog mess on pavements. Owners have a legal duty to clean up after their dogs in public places and can face an on-the-spot fine of £80 and upto £1,000 if they are taken to court for non-payment. Please have respect for others, particularly children, and clean up after you. Dog poop bags can be left in all public waste bins around the village. More damage has been caused to the children's playing field fence by vandals. Street lights - the order has been placed for the upgrade of the next batch of street lights from the yellow sodium bulb to white LED units. At present the council has a contract with Eon for the maintenance of the lights, which includes the cost of call outs for repairs and an annual inspection and clean. This costs about £1,000 p.a. but there have only been one or two incidents each year recently so the council will consider at the February meeting using another contractor that charges for each call out. Village Clean-up Day - the litter problem seems to have reduced, perhaps due to those villagers who do a regular patrol, so the council has decided to review the situation in the autumn. Defibrillator - a group has been meeting to take this forward. If you want to get involved please contact any parish councillor. VE Day - 8th May 2020 is VE (Victory in Europe) Day to commemorate 75 years since the end of the war in Europe. The parish council is inviting all the main village groups to a meeting to discuss any ideas on how we can mark this

Page 17: STOCKTON’S NEWS...The Shackleton Connection It has been another successful week here at Stockton Primary. Our new themes and topics are well under way with lots of super learning

17

date in the village. This meeting will take place at 6.30 pm on Monday 17th February in the Village Hall. Any villager can also attend. Parish Council Precept - the precept is the amount of money that Stratford collects on behalf of the parish council and then hands over to us as our budget. For 2020/21 the parish council decided at its December meeting to increase the total amount from £25,000 to £25,500 to keep up with inflation. Next meeting - 7.15 pm on Monday 17th February in the village hall. Howard Collerson (Chairman)

Time is flying by - 2020 now, where does it go. I am still very busy dealing with various items in the Southam, Stockton and Napton area. Recently the main ones have been flooding, blocked drains and sewers, overgrown hedges over paths, potholes, school places and streetlights. In a recent survey (Mori survey I think) WCC came joint top in the country for highway maintenance. I am the first to admit that sometimes the roads in our area aren't the best but compared to some (especially some neighbours), they are better. However there is still room for improvement. I am pleased to announce that several Stockton organisations have benefitted from my WCC grants in 2019/20. I will leave those organisation to publicise this. Warwickshire Fire and Rescue (WF&RS) are recruiting for full-time and retained firefighters, please contact me or Southam Fire station for details. I also attended a Passing Out parade for new recruits in Nuneaton just before Christmas. This month I've been all around the County visiting Fire Stations to see all the great work WF&RS does in the community. Finally some money from my delegated budget has been used to get some initial works on Stockton Crossroads and the road to the Blue Lias signage etc. to be included the maintenance programme of WCC. It is hoped that this will be spent this financial year. Best Wishes Andy

Following the District Council approving the Green Waste Charging Scheme I am submitting a formal complaint regarding the consultation around the proposed charges and have coordinated these efforts with my colleagues on the council. I hope this will lead to a review of the decision, which I am opposed to. For EU citizens who need help and advice regarding the Settled Status Scheme, the District Council are working with others to offer support sessions. The next is from 11:00am to 12:30pm at 2 School Road, Wellesbourne on the 5th of Feb. For more information visit www.settled.org.uk. A few local residents are setting up Stoneythorpe parkrun at the Dallas Burston polo ground, set to start from spring 2020. These events are a great opportunity to exercise in an organised setting, regardless of ability. I have pledged my support and would encourage local residents to take part once it is up and running. Kind Regards, Cllr Louis Adam

Southam’s French Street Market – Sunday 5th April Southam will once again be hosting the ever-popular French Street Market on Sunday April 5th between 10am and 4pm.

The traders who visit us annually are mostly based in Normandy and travel across the Channel to bring us a fantastic range of tempting French food and produce to try. ‘France At Home’ have been organising these events for more than 25 years, and together with volunteers from Southam First they will transform Southam’s High Street into a French-style market. Freshly baked bread, croissants, cakes, biscuits and crêpes are things that the French do really well, and there will be a wonderful variety and style of baking to tempt you. Savoury street food, tartiflette, delicious cheeses, olives from Provence, cooked meats, paté and saucisson, will all be there to persuade you to try something a little different from your traditional Sunday lunch. Beautiful French patisserie, tarts, cakes and pastries will make your teatime special too! There will be hand-made crafts, toys, games, baskets, leather bags and purses, fashions and accessories, vintage music and many more French-themed products that are not normally available on the High Street. Southam’s main High Street will be closed to all vehicles, so everyone can enjoy the market in a safe, traffic-free environment. With plenty of free parking, this is a family-friendly event and the organisers are hoping to attract both residents and visitors from around the district to enjoy a very special market day in Southam.

Resisting temptation Have all your New Year’s resolutions gone out of window yet? Have you given up on “Dry January” or “Veganuary” (adopting a vegan lifestyle)? Have you given in to temptation? At the end of the month, Christians head into the season of Lent when we remember Jesus going into the desert to spend time with his heavenly Father before the beginning of his earthly mission and ministry. (Note to self – it is always worth having some quiet time, especially with God, before setting out on a major new venture or project.) But while he was in the desert, it wasn’t long before Jesus was confronted by the devil, trying to tempt him off course. Jesus was tempted to turn stones into bread – to use his power for his own benefit. Jesus was tempted to throw himself off the temple - to test God. Finally, he was offered control of the world if he worshipped the devil – to distract him from his mission and make him focus on worldly power. Jesus was tempted to doubt God, to put his trust into something else, to rely on his own power, to worship something other than God. Jesus was tempted when he was tired, alone and hungry – at his most vulnerable. But Jesus stood firm in resisting temptation. We need to recognise temptation for what it is – something that will lead us to do or have something that we know we should not do or have – something that will ultimately not be good for us. We need to face our temptations, to name, understand and resist them. We know that Jesus understands what it’s like to be tempted and if we trust in him, he will give us the strength to resist temptation. That is why Christians pray every day “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” This Lent, instead of trying to give something up, why not try doing a small act of kindness each day, in response to what God has done for us through Jesus. What a difference it could make to the world around us! God bless, Gillian

These services, which take place world wide every year on the first

Samoa.

This year’s service has been prepared by

Christian women of Zimbabwe.

It includes interesting information about the history, geography and

way of life in Zimbabwe.

Our Christmas party was a great success and many thanks to Denyse with helpers Pat, Diane and Wendy for putting on such a tasty spread and being so organised. Thanks also go to Sandi for her lively game! Santa appeared, goodness knows who he was he must have been the real Santa sparing us a little time in his busy calendar. He handed us our environmentally friendly gifts and I think most of us were happy with them! It was certainly different and there were laughs as a voice shouted “Oh I really wanted dried worms for the birds”. We finished off our WI year at Our Lady Church, Southam for the Carol Service; the mince pies were delicious! On to 2020. Such a futuristic sounding year. We have some interesting speakers coming up and amongst them are a talk on the History of the Joke, one on the Ifakara Bakery Project and Velvet Glove - an entertainment. We also have a session of Kurling in May which I am looking forward to. We won’t be bringing in an ice rink for that I am told! If you are interested in becoming a member you are very welcome, just come along on the night a few minutes early or call our Secretary Joan or President Sue on the numbers above for more information. There is no charge for the first week you attend. Our craft club has settled down nicely and we were very proud of our fabric Christmas wreaths, some of us making a second one. We have since been taught how to make angels and also greetings cards. We tend to use recycled materials as much as we can so this is proving to be very inexpensive. Our present project is working together for the Climate Change, Show the Love campaign during February. We are making fabric green hearts and these can be decorated in all different ways with green buttons, braiding, anything at all and they are given or displayed to raise awareness. The WI has a proud history of taking action to protect the environment campaigning to clean up our beaches, standing up for the honeybee amongst others. Climate change is already affecting the things we love, it can be seen through increased flooding, decline of bees, it is changing the seasons and disturbing the journeys of migrating birds as well as affecting crops and flowers. Our next meeting will be Monday 3rd February at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall when we will be hearing from Anthony Poulton-Smith on History of the Joke. The competition is a small winter foliage arrangement. Photo on page 43

Like me are you fed up of these dark mornings, rain, mild weather and sharp winds? Well how can we cheer you up? At the hall we have some exciting new cinema nights to tempt you. Delicious cake, ground coffee and tea await you at our Coffee mornings. And due to popular demand a spring table top sale. Work at the hall is always ongoing and our latest project is to purchase and in-stall our own screen. With the funds now secured we have been working hard to make the hall sound for the screen. Two of our volunteers went to collect wood from Timber Mouldings, Stockton to fit to the wall upon which the screen will be hung. What a surprise when then very kindly supplied the wood free of charge. Thank you Timber Mouldings, it is acts of kindness like this that keep us going. The screen has now been ordered, and we await our fitting date with an-ticipation and excitement. Our next project will be to renew the lights in the hall to LED; making us more environmentally friendly and cost efficient. The heating system has been cleaned and is much more efficient and really warm. Working with our friendly electrician Seb, we feel confident we can keep the hall toasty from now on. So it just leaves me to invite you all to the next coffee morning which is the first Saturday of the month 10am till 12 noon and to our Cinema Nights which are the last Saturday of the month 7pm. If you have thought of coming but not tried us yet, go on give it a go, what have you to lose? We are a pretty friendly lot and a smile and a warm welcome awaits. Stockton’s Archives

STOCKTON’S WAR DEAD - WORLD WAR II The year 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of the end of WW 2 and it is my intention to follow up on my stories of the men of Stockton who died in WW 1, by researching the eight men who died in WW 2. The research process is likely to be quite different. Both start with finding the men’s details on the War Office records. In the case of those who died in WW 1 this was followed up by tracing them on the 1911 online census records to find their family history. Tracing any articles from the old Stockton Parish Magazines and local newspaper stories filled out their stories. But because so many of these men died in their late teens or early twenties they never left any direct descendents so there were not many personal recollections from families in the village. However, in the cases of the WW 2 men it will not be possible to find them on the census data as 1911 is still the last published record and none of them will have been alive at that time, but it is likely that there will still be some memories of these men or their families amongst older villagers. The men’s names are Albert Arthur Ayriss Dennis Bennett William Clement Cleaver (see below and who died 76 years ago ) William Edward Greene William Thornicroft Peter Henry Taylor Denis Wall George Herbert (Bert) Wright So if you have any photographs or knowledge of these men or their families, please get in touch so that we can put their stories together as a tribute to their service and bravery. WILLIAM CLEMENT CLEAVER

27

Lance Corporal William Cleaver was born in July/Aug/Sep of 1920 to William C Cleaver (born 1894 at Elmdon Heath) and Eleanor Beasley. They also had a daughter, June, born 17 July 1933. William married Rachel Gunthrop (born 23 June1920, died November1991) on 5 May 1944 at Stockton. Rachel remarried in 1946 to Walter Righton. In 1939 the family lived in The Square, Stockton, William senior was a locomotive engine driver and William junior was a capstan lathe hand. William died 5 January 1944 at the age of 23 and is buried in Bari Cemetery, Puglia, Italy (plot II.B.36). His service no. was 7650125 and he served in the REME. Article from the Leamington Spa Courier, 21st January 1944. “Solider’s Death - News of the death from a tropical disease when serving in the Middle East of William Cleaver. elder son of Mr & Mrs W Cleaver came as a great shock to the village on Tuesday. William went through the North African campaign and recently wrote to his young wife and parents that he would be expected to be coming home on leave and would probably be home before his letter. His father, who served in the 1914-18 War, is an energetic worker for the Stockton branch of the British Legion, a sergeant in the Home Guard and prime mover in the Stockton Soldiers’ Comfort Fund.” In Memoriam notices from the Leamington Sap Courier, 29th December 1944 “Cleaver - In loving memory of a dear husband, Bill, who died on active service, January 4th 1944. Loving wife, Rachel. “Some may think that you are forgotten when they see me smile, but they don't know what lies behind that smile”. “Cleaver - Treasured memories of our dear Bill who died on active service, January 4th 1944. Always remembered by Ruth and mother-in-law. “We often sit and think of you, of the things you used to say and do and wonder why you had to died the chance to say Goodbye”.

Taken from Stockton News April 2002 Stockton Co-Operative Society 20th February 1893 To the Editor of the Midland Times SIR, The above Society is just now passing through a critical period in its existence, the stock-taking and balance at Christmas last having revealed the fact that the profits on the quarter’s trading were absolutely nil, or even worse, for there was a small loss. Although the committee had some reason to complain, they had never anticipated such a disastrous result, seeing that they were able to pay 2/6 in the £ dividend to their members out of the profits made during the previous quarter ending September, and carry forward a small balance. After a series of exhaustive investigations the committee took steps to secure a change of management. Recently a general meeting of the whole members was convened to hear the report of the committee and fill the places of the retiring members, when, as far as could be judged, the general body of them were satisfied the committee had endeavoured to make the best of a bad job. Two or three of the younger men, however, had evidently attended intent on finding fault and to tell the committee things they ought to do and things they ought not to do, but as is usual in such cases, they were all of them individuals who had a very small interest (if any) at stake, and who would have broken the back of the Society long since, if only their counsels had prevailed. Several good and practical suggestions were made by other members, which will be sure to receive due consideration by the committee, who hope shortly to secure the services of a suitable manager and return to their former prosperous career, which desirable result can only be attained by the members pulling all together (as the chairman pointed out), and by avoiding, instead of striving to introduce partisanship. Taken from Stockton News November 2002 Snow Causes a Motor Car Accident 17th February 1906 On Tuesday night, as Mrs. Emmett and Miss Enos, accompanied by their driver, W. Smith, were returning in their motor car to Warwick from Melton Mowbray, the car was driven full tilt at a gate at Stockton Turn. The car, which was a new and valuable one, sustained considerable damage and embedded itself in the ditch with such force that two horses could not dislodge it, and it had to be left until next day to be dug out. The driver knew the road, but the snow which had accumulated on the glass screen of the car and on the gate gave the appearance of an open road, and consequently he did not think he was so near the turn. He managed to stick to his wheel and was unhurt, but Miss Enos was thrown from her seat and sustained injuries to her head, necessitating medical treatment. Mrs. Emmett was also badly shaken. The car is the property of Mr. Robert Emmett, The Priory, Warwick, and has only been running for about a fortnight.

On Sunday morning Charlie Gardner, a lad about 12 years old, was returning home after taking a message to Birdingbury Wharf by way of the canal towpath, when he slipped up off a stone into the canal opposite Nelson’s Works. Two of his ‘pals’, who are about the same age - Arnold Shaw and Arthur Gardner - had accompanied the unfortunate lad on his journey, but were some distance in front when the accident happened. They rushed back, but could not tell the whereabouts of the lad till his hand came above water, when they at once set about getting him out. By their united efforts they rescued the boy - who was unconscious - and at once set to work to render first aid as they had been taught at Boy Scout meetings. About ten minutes afterwards a boatman, who came up, said that the lad was dead, but the Scouts continued to pump till they were successful in bringing their comrade round. They then carried him to the nearest house (Mr. Cooksey’s) one of Scouts running home to the village to fetch dry clothes, and later on they took the boy home. It is extremely fortunate that the boys knew how to render first aid. On arriving home the lads were each offered a substantial award by the parents of the rescued lad, but they would not accept, stating that they had only done a Scout’s duty. It is interesting to note that this is the third lad Arthur Gardner has been instrumental in saving from drowning. He rescued a lad who had got into some disused quarries a short time ago, and previously rescued his brother, aged 18.

Taken from Stockton News August 2002 Shooting for a Fat Pig 1st February, 1913 This event, which took place at Stockton on Thursday last week, attracted a large number of spectators and shooters from a great distance around, many old shooters being present from Birmingham, Coventry, Rugby, Leamington, Warwick, Daventry, and all the neighbouring villages. Two sweepstakes were first shot off, the first being won by Mr. T. Eadon (Napton), and the second by Messrs. Sherrard (Coventry), Yates (Rugby) and T. Jeffs (Long Itchington). There were 24 entries for the prize of a fat pig, given by Mr. John Cleaver of the Barley Mow Inn, the enterprising organiser. Each competitor had seven birds, but after shooting off, there were 11 shooters left in, each having killed five birds out of a seven bird sweep. As all the birds (276) had been liberated and it was getting dusk, the 11 shooters decided to divide a £9 money prize instead of shooting off. The following were the successful competitors:- Messrs Day (Birmingham), Sherrard (Coventry), T. Jeffs (Long Itchington), P. Cleaver (Stockton), Garlick (Coventry), Lees (Birmingham), Howard (Birmingham), Vernon (Coventry), Hodges (Stockton), F.W. Neal (Stockton) and Sanders (Rugby).

STOCKTON’S WEATHER STATION (Your weather monitor has been on holiday and so apologises for the delay in reporting the November weather and also for using the readings from a nearby school weather station in place of the Stockton readings) NOVEMBER 2019 Headlines - the wettest November since 1970, although we managed to avoid any flooding locally The average minimum temperature was 2.9 deg. C, one degree above the average (1.9 deg. C).The lowest temperature was -1.2 deg. C on the 29th. The average maximum temperature was 7.6 deg. C, half a degree above the average (7.1 deg. C). The highest temperature was 13.1 deg. C on the 1st. Rainfall, at 118 mm, was nearly twice the November average of 63mm, with heavy rain on three days (6th, 10th and 14th). It rained on 19 days. With all this rain its not surpris-ing that sunshine totals are below average at 76% of the normal levels. The wind blew mostly from the south-west, south and south-east (18 days) DECEMBER 2019 Headlines - the wettest June to December period since 1880 The average minimum temperature was 3.5 deg. C, nearly half a degree below the average (4.1 deg. C).The lowest temperature was -1.9 deg. C on the 2nd. The average maximum temperature was 8.3 deg. C, again one degree above the aver-age (7.2 deg. C). The highest temperature was 12.2 deg. C on the 10th Rainfall, at 84 mm, was a third higher than the December average of 62mm, with heavy rain on three days (12th, 18th and 20th). It rained on 19 days. This month the sunshine levels were 13% above the normal levels. Unusually for December the wind blew mostly from the west, south-west and south (19 days) Trivia of the month Amount of rainfall so far this year 758mm Amount of rainfall in 2018 by end of Dec. - 568mm Number of rainy days so far this year - 131 Number of rainy days in 2018 by end of Dec. - 111 ANNUAL SUMMARY FOR 2019 Hottest day 34.7 deg C on 25th July Coldest night -5.8 deg C on 3rd February Wettest day 29 mm on 14th November. Wettest Month - June 112.5 mm Driest Month - April 17.5 mm Although the weather in the same month varies from year to year, over the year things stay remarkably consistent . So the average maximum temperature in

2019 was 14.2 deg C. just higher then the 30 year average of 14.0 deg. The aver-age minimum was 6.7 deg.C, higher than the 30 year average of 6.4 deg. Rainfall has been the big difference in 2019 with 758 mm compared to the 30 year average of 692 mm. This was due to the June to December period re-cording the highest levels for decades. This year has been slightly sunnier (4%) than the 30 year average.

It's a bit late but here are my predictions for 2020.

There will be some extremes of weather, it will be the hottest, driest, wettest, or windiest and records will be broken. At least one of your favourite plants will be destroyed by either rabbits, mice, deer, aphids or the family dog. You will lose (mis-place) your secateurs/trowel/gloves at some time. There will be a new pest or disease (from abroad) which will threaten a well known, well-loved group of plants. Taxonomists will reclassify another group of plants amid much raising of eyebrows from the general public. We will all be a little bit older and some of the garden jobs will be harder to do. I often wonder why so many of us are so keen on gardening when there are so many potential set-backs. Most of us use far too much plastic, many of us are wanting to cut down our use of it. Our aim this year is to try to reduce the amount of plastic we buy in. If our customers were to return the pots which had our plants in (washed and not broken) we will pay 10p per pot. We can then re-use them. Please don't bring us pink/purple/blue pots or those with sticky stickers on which can't be removed, just the ones bought from us.

2019 finished with some great competitions, the crowning of the Annual Singles Champion and two new members – Sally and Rick Hayes, who we warmly wel-come into the fold. 21 players turned out for our Annual Beaujolais Nouveau melee on Saturday 23rd November, all expecting rain but very happy when it held off until the last few minutes of the afternoon. After three rounds there were just two unbeaten players – Dave Hancox and Perry Stevens, with Dave taking the honours on +22, well ahead of Perry’s +11. There were seven players with two wins, the best of these being Becky Rushton on +13, who took third place. At the end of play everyone adjourned to the club house for a French themed buffet and a taste of the 2019 Beaujolais Nouveau. The wine was very drinkable and the buffet was excellent, particularly the French Onion Soup made by Rich Rushton, so everyone had a great afternoon. This was followed by the December melee on 7th December that was contested by ten players. After three rounds there were just two unbeaten players – Dave Hancox and Perry Stevens, Dave winning with a better points difference. The 2019 Singles League finished on 28th December, with Sarah Jerger’s 23 wins putting her well ahead of Dave Hancox on 19 wins, giving her the Singles Champion title for the second year running. The 2020 season has also started well with two new members – John and Anthea Sansom, welcome to them, and a hard fought melee on 4th January involving 14 players. After three rounds there were just two unbeaten players – Paula David and John Emberton – who tied for top place with a points advantage of +10 each. Five players achieved two wins each, the best of these being Rita David with +12 who therefore won third prize. The Stockton Pétanque Club 2019/20 Winter League started on 5th October based upon the results of the Saturday Club. Just half-way through John Ember-ton is leading with 50 points followed by Perry Stevens on 47, Dave Hancox on 45 and Sarah Jerger on 44 – so all to play for in the second half! Our next melee will be on Saturday 1st February commencing 1.00pm, and is open to anyone who would like to join us. We will provide the boules and tuition on the rules of the game.
