The play Stop Bullying Me! explores issues surrounding verbal bullying and loneliness. It gives the message that bullying is always wrong, that bullies must take responsibility for their actions and that those being bullied must not keep it a secret. You might consider using this play as part of an anti-bullying week, as a PSHME focus or as part of the Year 4 Literacy Unit 4, Stories which Raise Issues or Dilemmas or within Unit 5 about Plays. The support material here gives teachers ideas for class discussions as well as activities that could be carried out linked to the story within the play. EN1: Speaking and Listening Group discussion and interaction • As part of an anti-bullying week or a PSHME session the children could discuss issues surrounding bullying. What is bullying? What would you do in this scenario? Who can help you if you see someone being bullied, or if you feel that you are being bullied? (NC: EN1 3a-f) Drama • This play is designed to be performed and the children could work in small groups or as a whole class to rehearse and perform this play. The children could be involved in every part of the production from set design and prop and costume making, to advertising and marketing their performance. (NC: EN1 4a-d) EN2: Reading Literature • As part of a Guided Reading session or a whole class performance the children should be encouraged to read the text aloud. (NC: EN2 4i) • Use this play alongside other text types to allow children to compare and contrast different text types. (NC: EN2 8g) EN3: Writing Knowledge, Skills and Understanding Composition • Examine the features of a playscript and watch performances/video clips of these playscripts to see how they have been interpreted in production. (NC: EN3 1e) Planning and Drafting (NC: EN3 2a-f) • Give the children an opportunity to write their own additional scene for the play; perhaps they could change the ending or add in an additional character to the dialogue in one scene. • Children should plan and draft their own writing, edit it to make any changes as well as peer and self-assess their own work. Additional activities: • Design a poster for anti-bullying week. • Write a poem that raises awareness of the issues around bullying. • Explore the issue of cyber-bullying and how to stay safe while using the Internet and texting on your mobile phone. • Create a presentation for younger children explaining what bullying is and what they can do if they feel they or someone else is being bullied.
