SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION (SMALL GROUPS, 15 MINUTES)Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Pray that kids would be inspired by today’s message to take on the challenge of telling others about Jesus. ask God to put friends in their path who need to hear His story, and that He would give your few the courage and humility to tell it!

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: Offering container

WHAT YOU DO:• Greet kids as they arrive and encourage them to place their offering in the container. • Ask kids what kind of things do we spend? (Money, time, attention, energy, etc.)• Let each kid respond to the following questions: o If you had a hundred dollars, how would you spend it? o Think about superman and his powers. If you had super strength that would last for one afternoon, how would

you spend that strength? o If you had a whole day and night to do anything you wanted, how would you spend those hours?

2. SIMON SAYSWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO:• Select one kid to be Simon, who will make the rules that other kids have to follow. • Simon will say either “Simon says (jump, sit, etc.)” or merely “Jump up and down.” • The rest of the group must do what Simon tells them when he says “Simon says.” • If they follow his directions when he omits “Simon says”, they’re out of the game until the next round. • Play several rounds, with the last player in the game becoming the new Simon.

WHAT YOU SAY:“You guys are great at doing what Simon says. [Transition] Let’s go hear about how to be great at doing what Jesus says.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

STORY: COMMUNICATING GOD’S TRUTH IN ENGAGING WAYS (LARGE GROUP, 35 MINUTES)Engage kids’ hearts through a dynamic and interactive Bible story, worship, and prayer experience in a Large Group setting.

SFX: Play high-energy music as kids enter.

Leader enters, dressed in a soccer jersey and carrying or dribbling a soccer ball.

OPENERLEADER: “Welcome back to [your environment’s name], everyone! It’s been an awesome month kicking (gently kick the soccer ball from one foot to another, then rest your foot on it) around the idea of humility!

CG: Humility Slide

“Humility is putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. Our Memory Verse says it like this:

CG: Memory Verse Slide

“Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3 (NIrV)

“Putting others first . . . it sounds nice, but it’s not always easy, is it? Thankfully Jesus told us how we can do it, but we have to pay attention to what He said. Before we get to that though, let’s test our listening skills. Who here thinks they’ve got what it takes to navigate this course? (Pause to see who raises their hands.) Keep your hands up if you think you can navigate this course while dribbling a soccer ball? (Pause to see who raises their hands.) Keep them up if you believe you can go through the course, turn around, then come back through it again faster than anyone else? (Pause to see who raises their hands.) And keep them up even longer if you think you can do all that . . . while blindfolded!

Choose three volunteers from the raised hands. Depending on the size of your group and the amount of time you have, you can always give everyone who wants to a chance to play.

SFX: Fun, upbeat music (optional)

Blindfold the first volunteer and give her instructions step by step to make her way through the obstacle course, using your phone timer to track time. Continue with subsequent volunteers until everyone has had a chance. If you need to make it more challenging for the kids, move the cones around each time after you blindfold them.

If you have a prize for the person who did the fastest/best job, you can give that out. Move the cones out of the way.

SETTING UP THE STORYBring out the pre-filled paper bags. Depending on your space and the size of your group, you can either place the bags across the front of your stage/in front of the kids or sit down in front of the kids and place the bags around you.

LEADER: “Last week we celebrated Easter together—the day we celebrate that Jesus rose from the dead! What an incredible day that was for Jesus’ friends. When He had been arrested and killed, His friends felt as though they were living in a nightmare. So three days later, when Jesus rose from the dead, they were filled with joy! Everything that Jesus had talked about was coming true!

APPEARANCESLEADER: “But in some ways, the whole thing must have seemed like a dream—especially when Jesus appeared in the same room with them, even though the door was locked.

Begin opening bag #1.

“Jesus ate with the disciples and showed them the scars (pull out the nails) in His hands from the nails and the whole in his side from the sword to let them know He was real.

“But Thomas wasn’t there at the time. ‘I must see the nail marks for myself! That’s the only way I’ll believe!’ Thomas insisted.

“A week later, Jesus appeared again. This time, Thomas got to see Him as well. ‘My Lord and my God!’ Thomas exclaimed.

“Jesus continued to show up for His friends over more than a month.

Begin to open bag #2.

He walked along the road with two of them, (pull out the fish) and later told Peter where to catch fish.

Open bag #3 and pull out the fish, bread, matches

“Jesus even made breakfast on the beach for Peter and several of the other disciples. He reminded His friends that everything He had done on earth was part of God’s plan to rescue His people. He quoted old prophesy to them that reminded them that the Messiah was going to suffer, but He would rise from the dead on the third day. But Jesus also made it clear the story was just beginning.

get rid of the Romans and finally make Himself an earthly king? After all, He could do anything, clearly, since He had come back from the dead!

“But they also may have been remembering what Jesus had told them before in Galilee. Let’s read that from the book of Matthew. (Read from Matthew 28:19, NIrV) ‘So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ Maybe Jesus wanted to talk to them more about that!

“At last, they reached the top of the mountain, where Jesus was waiting for them. The disciples gathered around Jesus. They couldn’t wait any longer to discover what was going on. They asked Jesus if He was going to give the kingdom back to Israel now.

“Let’s read what He said to them. (Read from Acts 1:7-8, NIrV) ‘You should not be concerned about times or dates. The Father has set them by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will tell people about me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria. And you will even tell other people about me from one end of the earth to the other.’

Begin to open bag #5

ASCENSIONLEADER: “The disciples didn’t have long to consider what Jesus had said. Because before their eyes, Jesus began rising from the ground, up toward heaven. I know, it sounds kind of crazy, right? But it’s true! Jesus continued to ascend until clouds blocked their view, and Jesus was gone! (Turn the bag upside down and shake it.)

“As Jesus’ friends stared up into the sky, two angels dressed in white appeared beside them.

“Let’s check out what the angels said. (Read from Acts 1:11, NIrV) ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking at the sky? Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. But he will come back in the same way you saw him go.’

“Amazed—and a bit dazed—the disciples finally climbed back down the hill to Jerusalem, reflecting on the big job Jesus had left them with. Jesus wanted everyone to hear about Him—people all over the world! It was a HUGE job, but they could do it through God’s power.

WRAPPING UP THE STORYLEADER: “And that’s just what they would do! For the rest of their lives, Jesus’ disciples would set aside their own plans. They dedicated their days to sharing the story of Jesus with everyone they met, both close to home and far from it. They did just what Jesus asked them to do. You and I can do what Jesus asked too. In fact, that’s a GREAT way to put others first.

“Jesus said a lot when He was here on earth, so we’ve got a lot to go on. Of course, the most important thing that Jesus said we should do is tell others about Him, but we also [Basic Truth] should treat others the way we want to be treated and honor God and others above ourselves. All of those are incredible ways to put others first. Let’s ask God to help us do that.”

PRAYLEADER: “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to die for us—for all of us, everyone in the whole world. Help us to stay focused on the mission to share Your love with everyone. Help us to be bold in sharing, but also kind and loving in all that we do so that others see who Jesus is and how He has changed our lives. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

WORSHIPLEADER: “Stand to your feet and let’s get ready to sing. This is a new song for us called ‘Go.’ It’s about us obeying what Jesus told us to do. He told us to go into the world and share His good news. Sing along once you catch on.

SFX: “Go” / track 4 from Kidmin Worship Vol. 5

“Yeah! We will go into the world and share His good news. It’s up to us to choose to live for God. Joshua 24:15 instructs us: Then choose for yourselves right now whom you will serve. . . . But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD (NIrV). Let’s be obedient and follow God with all that we are.”

SFX: “I Will Follow” / track 9 from Zapped

CLOSERLEADER: “The mission Jesus gave His disciples? AMAZING! Jesus told His friends to spend the rest of their lives pointing others to Him. Their neighbors. People they met in town. People in other cities. Even people in the most faraway places they could imagine!

“That’s our mission, too! Telling people about God and showing them how Jesus lived is an incredible way you can put others first. But you put others first ANY time that you live out the things Jesus told His followers.

“When someone hurts you, and you choose not to hurt them back, you’re putting others first. When you comfort someone who is sad or sick, you’re putting others first. When you make peace between two of your friends who are fighting, you’re putting others first. When you take time to pray for someone, you’re putting others first.”

“That’s why it’s important to remember today.

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT (SMALL GROUPS, 25 MINUTES)Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. GOOD NEWS! (application activity / review the Bible story)WHAT YOU NEED: Blank paper; pens, pencils, and coloring materials

WHAT YOU DO:• Divide the group into pairs or trios. They will be working together on a Good News announcement, so either pair older

and younger kids, or group kids together based on reading/writing ability.• Assign each group a way to announce the Good News that Jesus lived, died, and rose again because of God’s love for

everyone! • For older kids some ideas are: a social media update, a newspaper story, a poster, a song set to a familiar tune, a

commercial for a documentary on the life of Jesus, a birth or wedding announcement, an old-timey “hear ye, hear ye” town crier announcement, etc. If possible, bring a recent birth or new-house announcement that you’ve received, or pull up images from Google or Pinterest to show the students.

• Give them the paper and coloring materials so that they can write down or illustrate their announcements. • If you have mostly younger kids, guide them to make a poster that says “Good News!” at the top and a picture of Jesus,

the empty tomb, or the cross.

WHAT YOU SAY:“These announcements sure get the point across! You used a lot of creativity to make your announcement. (If applicable to your group, point out the diversity in the announcement styles and formats. Talk about which format would be the best to announce the Good News to various audiences.) I’m sure there are plenty of other things you could have done with these coloring materials and paper. You could have written a poem telling the world how great you are for taking out the garbage this week, or you could have sung a song about your favorite shape of pasta. But you decided to give up what you could have done to tell other people the best news in history—that God loves us and came to rescue us! When you share the Good News with people instead of just talking about other things, you’re putting them first. This is something that people really need to know!

[Make it Personal] (Share an age-appropriate time when you shared the Gospel, especially if it came at the cost of either another opportunity, or your own personal embarrassment or shyness.) I decided then to put that other person’s need to hear the Good News before my own feelings. That was a time that I saw [Bottom Line] I can put others first by doing what Jesus said.”

* 2. ONE HOUR HUMILITY (application activity)WHAT YOU NEED: “One Hour Humility Certificate” Activity Page, pens or pencils

• For younger kids, suggest that they do an extra chore around their house, or make a card for someone who is sick or lonely. They could make their favorite treat to give away, or take some time to sort through their toys and give some really great ones to younger family or a charity.

• For older kids, suggest that they do a hard chore around their house or neighborhood; that they volunteer at a nursing home or senior center; that they give up a favorite pastime in order to spend an hour with a much younger sibling or friend as a “mother’s helper.”

• For all kids, encourage them to be as realistic and specific as they can be in planning their hour.• When they’ve decided what to do, guide kids to fill out the One Hour Humility Certificate.

WHAT YOU SAY:“What great ideas for putting others first this week! Just like the disciples put aside their plans to tell everyone the Good News, you’ve decided to put aside your plans for an hour to live the Good News. I’m going to be so excited to hear all about this next week! Whether you’re giving away your favorite treat to someone who needs cheering up, or you’re doing yard work for a neighbor instead of beating Level 6,000 in your best video game, you all are really going to show that [Bottom Line] I can put others first by doing what Jesus said. How can showing humility and serving others help them understand the Good News of God’s love? (Allow for answers.) When we set aside our own plans and put others first, we are showing God’s love, which is why Jesus came. People will want to know why you’re doing this, and don’t be afraid to let them know: God loves them and you do too!”

3. NAME PASS (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: The memory verse soccer ball from last week

WHAT YOU DO:• Gather the group in a standing circle and look up Philippians 2:3 in the Bibles. Say it out loud together so kids will

remember it. • Hand the ball to the child on your right. She should say the first sentence of the verse, and then call someone’s name

across the circle. She will kick the ball to that person, who needs to stop it with their foot and say the next sentence of the verse before calling another name and passing the ball across the circle. Repeat this and say the verse as many times as necessary for all the kids to get a turn passing the soccer ball.

• For younger kids, you may want to sit in a circle and roll the ball instead of kicking it. • For older kids, they can speed up their sentences and try to catch each other off-guard. If someone misses the pass, they

have to start the verse over again. Play goes until the verse has been said completely 10 times.

WHAT YOU SAY:“This verse is talking directly to us, reminding us not to do things just to show off or get ahead. As we live the idea that [Bottom Line] I can put others first by doing what Jesus said, we will do less to get attention for ourselves, and more to show others how great God is and how much He loves the whole world.”

Optional Additional Discussion Questions for Older Kids• When was the last time you saw or heard about someone putting others first? Can you tell us more about that? Who was

there? What was happening? How did the actions of that person change the situation?• What is something that Jesus said to do that you can do to put others first?

• What are some ways you can begin to make doing what Jesus said something that comes more naturally or automatically to you?

• Are you typically aware of what’s happening when you don’t put others first? What about when you do put others first? How do you feel when you’ve put someone else first in a big way?

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: • Gather the group in a circle. • Tell them that they’ll be repeating this part of the prayer when you point to them: “I will do what Jesus said.”• Pray together, pointing to the group when it’s their part.

WHAT YOU SAY:“Dear God, please help us this week to remember our commitment: I will do what Jesus said.Even when I have big plans and showing humility would mean missing out: I will do what Jesus said. When I want to spend my time the way I want: I will do what Jesus said. When I want to spend my money the way I want: I will do what Jesus said. When I want to spend my energy the way I want :I will do what Jesus said. When it means doing something I don’t really like: I will do what Jesus said. When it means eating something I don’t care for: I will do what Jesus said. When it means loving someone who is different: I will do what Jesus said.Even when humility is hard: I will do what Jesus said.Because He is here to help me: I will do what Jesus said.Amen.”

Thanks for praying that with me, guys. Remember your part of the prayer this week when you need help because [Bottom Line] I can put others first by doing what Jesus said.”

As adults arrive to pick up show them the One Hour Humility Certificates and make sure they are able to help their child complete their hour. Display the Good News Announcements somewhere in your small group area and encourage kids to share their announcement with their parents as they pick up.
