Today’s purpose is for kids to understand and apply how important it is to show love to others–no matter who they are. We’ll do this through exploring a story that Jesus told his followers, the parable of the Good Samaritan!

MAIN VERSE

Matthew 22:39b ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

DATE February 9-10, 2019

SET UP EXPECTATIONS

● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad to have you here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:

○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!

INTRODUCE THE BIG IDEA

● Say: Today, we’re going to hear a really cool story that Jesus told, and it’s all about how we should treat other people! But first, I want to hear from you: How do YOU think Jesus wants us to treat others? (Let a few kids share with the group, or let kids talk to a partner about it for 30 seconds.)

● Say: Jesus wants us to love ALL people, even when we don’t feel like talking to them, or even when nobody else is looking. He wants us to treat them the way WE want to be treated. Which leads to today’s BIG IDEA: Love others as much as you love yourself.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN

● Say: Let’s check out something that Jesus said to his followers in the book of Matthew:

● Slide: Matthew 22:39b ‘‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

● Say: What do you think it means to love someone as you love yourself? (Let a few kids share with the group, or let kids talk to a partner about it for 30 seconds.) To help us understand, let’s watch a video, and check out the special story that Jesus told his followers, to help THEM understand! As you watch, pay attention to how someone in the story shows incredible love to someone very unexpected.

● Video: God’s Story / The Good Samaritan● Ask: First, who did NOT show love and help the hurt man on

the side of the road? (Let kids respond.) Yep, a priest and a temple assistant, which are kind of like people who work at a church! And who DID help the hurt man? (Let kids respond.) Yep, the Samaritan–the one who was supposed to be an enemy.

● Say: Imagine it like this. You’re at school, playing a game in gym class, and you get really hurt. You’re lying on the ground, you can’t get up, and you obviously need some help. Then your principal walks right by you...and doesn't do anything! She just keeps walking. Then your teacher walks by...and he doesn’t do anything either! He just keeps on walking and ignores you.

● Say: Then…the meanest person that you know comes up. Think for a second about who that would be (let kids think). That person actually stops, helps you, takes you the hospital and won’t leave until you’re OK!

SHOW LOVE

● Say: Let’s watch another video that shows how you can have a big impact on the world when you show love and kindness to others, even when you don’t them!

● Video: Color Your World with Kindness● Ask: What happened in that video? (Let kids respond.) Yep:

one person showed love to another, then that person showed to another, and on and on and on! When you love others, it can have a huge affect down the road.

SET UP GAME TIME

● Say: Let’s do an activity to help us remember that we should love everyone, no matter who they are.

LARGE GROUP

Game time

Time: 10 minutes

Big Idea: Love others as much as you love yourself.

Supplies:

Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer● Split into small groups of 6 kids each (if needed, they can

stay in regular sized small groups, or stay in one large group, and have volunteers act out the story on stage).

HOW TO PLAY

● Have each group act out their own version of ‘the good Samaritan’ set in today’s world. Each group will need to brainstorm:

○ Who are the key characters? Who might they be in today’s world?

○ Where is the story going to be set?○ What are the key “events” of the story?

● When each group has created their story, they then need to choose how they are going to act it out. Make sure each group involves each kid!

● You can have each group just do it on their own, or have them all act it out for the rest of the room!

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer.● Split into small groups.

ASK:

● What do you normally think of when you hear the word, “neighbor”?

● Who Jesus was talking about when HE used the word “neighbor”? (Let kids respond.)

DO:

● Say: A “neighbor”could be anyone! A friend, a family member, someone you love, or even someone you don’t like, or have never met before!

● Give each group a large tear-off sheet of paper and set out markers.

● Let each kid draw pictures of 5 “neighbors” (and write their names), then go around and share who those people are. If there’s time, let kids share a way that they could show love to one of those people this week.

COOL DOWN TIME

Time: 10 minutes

Big Idea: Love others as much as you love yourself.

Supplies: ● Large sheet of tear

off paper (1/group)● Markers (1

set/group)

● Brave Ones (youtube.com/watch?v=rU5QhPlhf9s)

TRANSITION STRETCH

● Say: Let’s take a minute for ourselves, and do a special stretch: stretch your feet out straight in front of you, and touch your toes for 5 seconds!

● Play the 10-Second Countdown Timer

JESUS IS LIKE THE GOOD SAMARITAN

● Say: So is it always easy to love our neighbors? (Let kids respond.) Why? (Let kids answer, and then give a personal example about why/when it’s been hard for you to love your neighbor.)

● Say: It’s tough for ALL of us to love others as much as we love ourselves. None of us are perfect, and we all mess up sometimes.

● Say: The thing is, Jesus showed us more love than anyone else could possibly ever do. He loved us so much, that he died for us, to rescue us from all our wrong choices. And because he did that, he wants us to follow him, and love others too. We can love others, because he loved us!

● Say: Let’s watch one more video to help us understand the story in a new way!

● Music Video: KC Raps / The Good Samaritan

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP

● Say: Everyone close your eyes, and think of ONE neighbor that you could show love to this week. Remember, they don’t have to live near you. They can be ANYONE. Even someone you don’t like. Maybe especially someone you don’t like. (Pause.)

● Say: Keep thinking of that person as we watch a worship video called “The Brave Ones”. Do you guys think the Good Samaritan had to be brave to do what he did, and help his enemy? (Let kids respond.) Absolutely. So as we watch this, think about how you can do the same.

● Music Video: The Brave Ones● Pray: Call on a kid to pray for the group, that God would be with

us this week as we show love to our neighbors.

Time: 15 minutes (or until parent pick up)

Big Idea: Love others as much as you love yourself.

Next Step: Show some unexpected love to one person this week.

Supplies: ● Coupon template

(1/kid)● Scissors (1

set/group)● Markers (1

set/group)● Stapler (1/group)

EXTRA TIME?

● Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION

● Go around the group and let every kid answer this question: What’s your favorite movie that you’ve seen recently?

RESPOND TO THE STORY

● Think about how you treat others. Who do you see yourself as in the story?

● Is it always easy to love others? Why/why not?● How do you want to be treated? Do you think that you can treat

others this way too? What makes you happy when people treat you a certain way?

MAKE IT PERSONAL

● This week’s next step is to show some unexpected love to one person this week.

● Give each kid a coupon template and set out scissors and markers.

○ Let them cut out the six coupons and decorate/color them however they like.

○ On the blank side of each coupon: write a different idea on how to show some “unexpected” love to people this week.

○ Discuss examples as a group if kids need help coming up with ideas. Try to think of things that YOU would want people to do for you!

■ doing chores around the house that you don’t normally do

■ saying someone kind or writing an encouraging note to someone

■ Give (or make) an unexpected gift for someone○ After the coupons are finished, let kids staple all of them

together to make a coupon book.○ Kids can physically give these coupons to people when

they do what’s written, or they can keep them in the coupon book.

PRAY

● Have kids find a partner, and ask each other what they need prayer for. Give them a few minutes to actually pray for each other!
