Being recognized will be Isaiah Weed, Horatio Smith, Brandon Niccum, Carlos Torres, Jamar Morris, Jason Malae, Jimmie Pace, Kyler Ferguson, Kemoni Rich, Erick Cook, Trey Merritt, Zave Goodrich, Andrew Lesnick and Collin Stork. • Senior Horatio Smith has overcome a slow start to the season and is moving up the conference All Purpose yardage list. Through week eight, Smith is fifth in the GAC, averaging 91.5 yards per game. Dakota Driskill and Maurice Wright Jr. continue to rack up the tackle totals after collecting 10 and 9, respectively, against Harding. The duo are second and third in the conference with Driskill totaling 89 tackles and Wright has recorded 88. • Facing the top defense in the Great American Conference, Northwestern collected more offensive yards against Harding than the Bisons defense had allowed on average this season. • Among opponents in program history, Northwestern has the best winning percentage against Southern Nazarene than any other opponent in which there have been a minumum of 10 games played. NWOSU leads the all-time series 12-2. • Southern Nazarene’s 44-37 win over the Rangers was the first win by a Crimson Storm team on the field of play. The only other win by SNU in the all-time series was via forfeit in 2005. Jimmie Pace was honored by the Great American Conference for his play in week seven against Arkansas Tech as the Co-Defensive Player of the Week. In the game, Pace finished with eight tackles, four solo, a sack, interception and forced fumble. The Northwestern defense has had an outstanding two-game stretch after allowing just a touchdown against East Central and shutting out Arkansas Tech. The last time the Rangers allowed seven or fewer points in two games was in November of 2004 when they shutout Southwestern Assemblies of God, 42-0, followed by a 24-7 win over Bacone College. The Tech shutout in week seven was the first by a Northwestern defense since walloping Panhandle State 56-0 in 2007. Northwestern snapped a seven-game losing streak against Arkansas Tech with its 21-0 victory in week seven. Freshman Tyson Gatewood is making a case to be a go to back for the Rangers after a 134 yard performance in week six against East Central. Gatewood was called upon to carry the ball 27 times, the most by a Ranger since teammate Jacob Peyton had 25 carries against Oklahoma Baptist in 2016. Tyson Gatewood’s recent running success has moved him into the top ten in the GAC in rushing with an average of 65.6 yards a game, eighth best in the league. Harding’s Tristan Tucker has the fourth best rushing average at 80.7 yards a game. When opponents have an opportunity to convert on third down, the Ranger defense steps up as they have only allowed the offensive team to move the chains 30.9% of the time, third best in the league. In week six, East Central was only 2-for-11 in the game on third down. In week five at Southeastern, Horatio Smith took a Savage Storm kickoff 85-yards to the house, the first kick return touchdown of his career. It was the first Ranger kickoff return since Jarion Tudman returned a kick at Southern Arkansas on 9/10/16. After years as an NAIA national power, Northwestern Oklahoma State is now a full member of the NCAA Division II after a three-year provisional period.

The transition began in the summer of 2012 with Northwestern’s formal acceptance into the membership cycle. Invitation in hand, the school severed ties with the Sooner Athletic Conference and the Central States Football League to join the Great American Conference as a provisional member.

The 12-team conference features a balance of six Arkansas and six Oklahoma schools. The move to the GAC rekindles decades old rivalries from the old Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference. Northwestern, East Central, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Southwestern Oklahoma State were all members up until the league split following the 1996 season.

When the latter three schools - along with Northeastern State - bolted for the NCAA in the mid-90s, Northwestern chose to remain with the NAIA and was rewarded with a long stretch of gridiron success. In the 11-year period between 1995 and 2005, the Rangers produced 40 NAIA All-Americans.

The 1999 Rangers finished 13-0 and captured the National Title. The 2000 group - led by three-time All-American Lynn Scott - went unbeaten before falling in the National Finals. Scott went on to play five seasons for the Dallas Cowboys.

Another future NFL standout played on that 2000 squad as a freshman. Patrick Crayton - later a Cowboy and San Diego Chargers - starred for four seasons. He helped lead the 2003 team back to the National Finals and was recently inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame.

Between 1996 and 2010, Northwestern compiled a 120-47 record (.719), winning eight conference titles. From 1999 to 2011 the Rangers posted an incredible 216 All-Conference selections as a member of the Central States Football League with nine trips to the NAIA Playoffs.

2017 | ALVA, Okla. Southern Nazarene 44, Northwestern 37

BETHANY, Okla. - It was one of the wildest games during the 2017 season in the Great American Conference as Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene faced off in Bethany, Okla. for a thrilling game that ended with the Crimson Storm on top of the Rangers, 44-37.

The rushing game was the big factor for the Rangers on the afternoon where the visitors racked up 224 yards on the ground, with Anthony Cota leading the way with 90 yards and a score. Jake McClurg and Jacob Peyton made up the bulk of the rest of the rushing attack totaling yards of 60 and 54 respectively with three TD’s between them.

On the defensive side of the ball, Maurice Wright Jr. led the way for the Black-and-Red with nine total tackles one of which was for a loss of two yards.

For the first time in history and 15 tries, the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm football team finished a game in victory against the Rangers on the field. Northwestern did however forfeit the game back in 2006 to the Storm, making it their only win over the Black-and-Red prior to the 2017 victory.

HEAD COACH MATT WALTER

ASSISTANT COACHES

Matt Walter is heading into his fourth season as the Ranger head football coach and Offen-sive Coordinator and is looking for another step in the winning direction.

The 2017 season was a big year in terms of progress for the young Ranger squad where they compiled a record of 5-6, the best mark since joining the NCAA Division II ranks. Under Walter, the team has progressed and gained one win more than the previous in all three seasons under the Ranger legend.

Northwestern had two defensive players make the All-GAC first team after big seasons. Maurice Wright Jr. and Aharon Barnes were two of the best defenders in the league and arguably the best at their respective positions.

The 2017 campaign was no different than the previous years, where the offense under Walter’s direction has progressed and made huge strides. This past season was dominated heavily on the ground, but overall the offense was fairly balanced.

In 2015, Quarterback Reid Miller broke five different season passing records, including pass attempts (515), completions (311), passing yards (3,259), passing TD’s (30) and passing yards per game (296.3). 2016 was even better in one category as he broke his own record of passing TD’s, making the new mark 35.

A couple passing records for single games were broken as well with the most passing yards in a game with 500 against Oklahoma Baptist, Touchdown passes thrown with six against Southern Nazarene, and passing attempts by a team in a single game with 70 against East Central. Once again he broke another one of his own marks on history, in that he completed 7 TD’s in the open-ing weekend in 2016 against Arkansas-Monticello in a 59-56 victory.

In his first season back at Northwestern, Walter coached six All-GAC selections, including a first-team choice in Joby Saint Fleur who was also a First-Team All-Region selection. Year two saw four selections from the team, Horatio Smith (2nd Team), Jordan Norris (2nd Team), Joby Saint Fleur (2nd Team) and Reid Miller (Honorable Mention).

Before returning home to Northwestern, he was at Emporia State for six years where he served as the strength and conditioning coach as well as the Offensive Coordinator.

The Northwestern alumnus was instrumental in the turnaround of Emporia State’s football for-tunes. The Hornets were 2-9 in his first season at ESU, but steadily improved and had a break-through season in 2012. That year, ESU finished 10-2 in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA). In 2013, ESU finished 9-2 and made its first Division II playoff ap-pearance since 2003.

Matt was the Offensive Coordinator the last four years at ESU where his offense was one of the top in the nation for those years.

Walter’s ESU offense ranked 15th in the nation in scoring offense and 20th in the nation in total offense during the 2013 season. In 2012 the Hornets led the MIAA and were ranked 10th in the nation in passing offense. They were also third in the MIAA and 25th in the nation in total offense. Emporia State scored over 40 points in six games that season, reaching 50 on three occasions.

Before going to ESU, Walter spent the four previous seasons as the head strength and condition-ing coach for the New Mexico State football team. Known to his athletes as ‘The Punisher’ for his grueling strength, speed and agility training, Walter guided the Aggies to break numerous school records in lifting, running and jumping. He also implemented a nutrition supplement program as well as the Lifter of the Year Award.

Walter is also recognized as a National Speed and Explosion Association certified coach. He pre-viously served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Southeastern Louisiana University for one year. Prior to that, Walter spent one year at Louisiana Tech University as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Walter was a standout athlete at Northwestern during the glory days of Ranger football in the 90’s and early 2000’s where he was the starting Fullback on the National Championship team in 1999 and was named the MVP of that game. He was also named an Honorable Mention All-American in the 2000 season.

Walter now resides in Alva with his wife, Suz and his two sons, Rowan and Torin.

Northwestern’s football team began the season with “Unfinished Business” as its slogan. On Saturday, Dec. 18, the No. 2 Rangers “finished business” with a 34-26 victory over No. 1 Georgetown (KY) College in the NAIA National Championship Game. North-western trailed 20-0 at halftime, thanks in part to three turnovers, but the its run-heavy option attack eventually wore down a highly touted Tiger defense. The Rangers scored 21-unanswered in the third quarter to take a 21-20 lead. Quarterback Al Hunt ran for a score and then tossed a 71-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to

34-20 early in the fourth, and the Ranger’s “Black Cloud” defense, featuring First Team All-Americans Dustin Loveless, Daryl Rich-ardson and Lynn Scott - took care of the rest. Richardson was named Defensive Player of the Game after recording three sacks and recovering a pair of crucial fumbles. With the win, Northwest-ern capped off a remarkable season that included a school-record 13 victories without a defeat and the first postseason victories in Northwestern history. All but the final game were decided by at least two TDs.
