Theyre infected, aggressive and show disoriented behaviour.

No, its not The Walking Dead, but it is a cause for concern as several raccoons carrying the canine dis-temper virus have been reported in Stouffville, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville warned in a media release Tuesday.

The virus may be lethal to dogs that arent vaccinated. It affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of canine mammals such as dogs, raccoons and skunks. Cats and humans, though, have nothing to worry about, as it is not transmittable to them.

A rise in aggressive behaviour a common symp-tom of the virus was reported since January among local raccoons. Disorientation, seizures and other bizarre behaviour are also symptoms. Infected rac-coons are more likely to approach people and sleep in public places.

It is very important that residents who encounter raccoons showing bizarre behaviour be very cautious, said Whitchurch-Stouffville animal control officer Con-nie Arnone.

Dogs can be infected upon contact with a raccoon. The virus can be transmitted through runny noses, teary eyes, urine or feces. The town urges dog owners to keep their pets leashed, vaccinated and licensed to avoid any issues.

The most common area of reported cases is in eastern Stouffville, south of Main Street and east of Memorial Park. There have been some reported cases of property damage caused by raccoons, but no reports of injuries.

There have been cases reported in the Thicket-wood Boulevard area and around Summitview Public School, Arnone said. We expect the number of cases of canine distemper in the area to remain level or pos-sibly increase over the coming months.

The day after the release was issued, another sus-pected case was reported on Alderwood Street.

To avoid any incident with infected raccoons, do not approach them, do not feed them and keep all garbage and recycling securely stored. Close off open areas and keep garage doors shut to avoid domestication of rac-coons.

If you see an infected raccoon, call animal control services at 1-855-898-8605.

ello, Stouffville! Im Ali, your new reporter at The Sun-Tribune.

Its been over a week since I started my new job here and Ive already fallen in love with the town and its people.

Youre friendly and you care about this town.

I also discovered someone in town has my name written across their licence plate! In case you see it, know that its not me. But what a coinci-dence, eh?

A little about me, I was born and raised in the Great-er Toronto Area but found myself living in Guelph for the last decade. I attended university there just like our mayor and instantly felt a connection with the city. I hadnt felt a connection like that for a long while, not until I arrived here last week.

My editor, Jim Mason, took me around for a brief tour of the town. He showed me the sights and sounds of the country close to the city and I immediately had a bar-rage of story ideas bouncing around in my head.

After a few walks up and down Main Street, I was impressed by the small town charm. Ive yet to visit the Lebovic Centre for Arts & Entertainment - 19 on the Park, Latcham Gallery or even the Earl of Whitchurch, but from what Ive heard, theyre amazing places wor-thy of being situated in a

town that has become one of Canadas fastest-growing municipalities.

Its a pleasure to drive through country roads and see nothing but farms, trees and open fields. I dont feel the congestion I felt back driving in and out of Toronto for my last job and its a huge relief.

Ive been told of the regions many hiking trails; believe me when I say Im excited to explore them all this summer.

Stouffville, like many towns and cities spread across our great country, acts as a reminder of the warmth, kindness and diversity that make Canadians known throughout the world.

Im proud to be part of a community that shows us what it means to be Canadi-an. Its a pleasure to serve the community and to play a role in keeping us all informed so we can be better neighbours and better citizens.

HAMSHitherto, its been me telling you all the virtues ofour ham, but I now have independent corroborationof my story. At the recent Ontario IndependentMeat Processors Convention, ourMAPLE SUGARHAM won the GOLD AWARD in the ham-makingcompetition. Its not that were so smart, or eveninnovative, its just our stubborn adherence to theidea of not cutting corners and taking shortcuts inthe process of making our hams (or anything elsewe do for that matter). For Easter, ham is the mealof choice, and we offer three types: First, we make agreat TRADITIONAL EASTER HAM. With thebone in, its available either whole or half, and itsslow cooked over oak. Next is a BLACK FORESTHAM. This is boneless, slow-smoked over oakand fully cooked, ready to go. Third, we have ourMAPLE SUGAR HAM. These are boneless andslow-roasted withMaple and Brown Sugar until theyare fully cooked. What is different about our hamsis they are not extended like commercially-madehams are. When you read the label on a supermarketham and see those words protein added, know thatits not a good thing at all. What it means is that notall you are paying for, and eating, is actually ham,and what ham you do get is of a texture far differentthan what ham used to be like, and ours still is.It takes us longer to make these, and they shrinkduring the process rather than grow, but what youget is the genuine old-fashioned article. Its best toorder early!TRADITIONALEASTER HAMS

nocks on the front door are about as com-mon as phone calls on our land

line these days. Our kids are all living south

of the 401. The basketball hoop is rusting in the drive-way. Any toys still in the house await being declared collec-tors items on eBay or, more likely, a visit from a very young relative.

Do children still ring the front door bell or has that neighbourhood nicety been replaced by all things social media, too? ie. Reminder: Brooklyn, age 6, you have an invitation waiting in your Linkedin profile to fly drones with Chloe after hot yoga class.

When there are young people on our doorstep theyre trying to collect shrinking Canadian dollars for a charity that sounds pretty close to the mainstream non-profits we all know but arent.

2016 would appear to offer us a rare reprieve from election campaigning, including the requisite knocking on doors and knocking of competitors.

And most of us dont knock on the neighbours door to borrow a cup of sugar any-more. We spare the oppor-tunity for social interaction and drive to and from Nofrills or Metro instead. This is not Leave it to Beaver.

So, when a knock came, it was a tad surprising.

The dude on the porch came bearing bad news. Like some sort of Kreskin with a chemistry set, he could tell from the street that our drink-ing water was bad. Real bad.

The better news was that he had the antidote for our prob-lem, if we would just let him in to examine our system.

And probably turn over our VISA number or a series of cheques.

We were busy. We had more faith in our municipal fathers we are governed by an all-

male council than a guy with a clipboard and a well-tuned sales pitch.

Yes, wed heard of Walk-erton, but we still were not interested.

We closed the door with a firm no thanks.

He knocked again. We opened the door again

and said we were disinter-ested. Again.

He knocked again.(Go ahead and hum Knock

Three Times by Tony Orlando and Dawn. I did.)

We did not answer and assumed he left.

Although I did slyly exit the house by a side door, in case salesman of the month was lying in wait behind the hedge.

Would this repeat knocking strategy do well in the United States where firearms are often at the ready?

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville issued a public warning related to the cam-paign last week. They noted the rigorous testing our tap water is subjected to.

They also advised, If the salesperson gets aggressive, the resident reserves the right to call York Regional Police at 9-1-1.

Does that also apply to duct cleaners clogging up my land line?

t Markham High, art was never a favou-rite subject. Truth is, it was a

    study I totally disliked.Even with a ruler, I

couldnt draw a straight line. And my circles looked like eggs laid by a leghorn hen.

Such wasnt always so. On one occasion, I received a red ribbon for a blue bird drawing at an area school fair. But that was in Jr. Fourth, (Grade 7). What lit-tle skill I may have had then obviously disappeared two years later. I was accorded a C in First Form art, (Grade 9).

I still recall the teacher holding aloft one of my completed masterpieces and announcing sarcas-tically to the class this is how not to do it. An embarrassing moment to say the least.

Adding insult to injury, the entire room vibrated with laughter, a response that didnt assist my already deflated ego.

However, time marches on. On entering the field of journalism I was prompted to learn something related to another form of art. It was called balance.

Balance is important, particularly with a newspa-pers front page, former Tri-bune publisher Bruce Annan repeatedly said. Slowly but surely his advice sank in.

Balance, ah yes balance. It was imperative 60 years ago and equally essential today. And not just in the Fifth Estate but similarly so here in town.

While I dislike tak-ing aim at an individual department, I cant help but wonder, when it comes to architectural design, (if there is such a sector), whos in charge, the munic-ipality or the developer? In many instances I conclude its the latter.

Take many subdivisions for example, particularly those south of Hoover Park and north of Millard Street, I see rows and rows of bor-ing uniformity. The only visible differences would seem to be some homes have two-car garages and others have one.

This form of standard-ization has become so com-mon, ones prompted to believe builders are merely handed a single plan and told take it from here Joe, the rest is up to you. And so it goes, street after street of look-alikes. How monot-onous!

    ... exteriors that are

    boxy, tedious and

    boring

Little wonder so many home-buyers are investing big bucks in houses here, only to tear them down and replace them with what they want, most larger than originals.

On Rupert Avenue, where weve lived for the last 57 years, a single block of homes, including ours, was constructed by one contractor. And all, with a few minor exceptions, were the same shape and size. This was OK back in 1954.

But not today. Indi-vidualitys the name of the

game. And last fall it reared its belated head. A primary house was demolished and replaced by a two-storey structure, much to the amazement of onlookers. While its dimensions tend to minimize those within its surroundings, the effect breaks structural repeti-tiveness on our side of the street.

Its not the first of its caste and it wont be the last.

Home-buyers in much of rural Whitchurch are saved this expense. With most lots sized at two acres or more, houses in all shapes and sizes are universal. Its interesting to travel the back roads and view the beauty of these works of art.

But one has no need to scrutinize the residences of our country cousins when we can appreciate the same individuality here on Main Street, with many homes dating back more than a century.

Check out, if you will, OBrien Avenue and Church Street, where builders of years gone by obviously took pride in distinctive-ness and originality. Not so today.

But why stop at resi-dential endeavours? Many Stouffville commercial and industrial locations also show a woeful lack of archi-tectural initiative.

There are sites where our town could have risen above the ordinary and become a regional show-place. But we failed.

Take, for example, the newest of our arenas, Soc-cerCity and some town-houses and condos, per-haps attractive on the inside but exteriors that are boxy, tedious and boring.

    We can do better.

    Lights out for Earth Hour

In one year, the world consumes approximately 15 terawatts of ener-gy enough to power 150 billion light bulbs.

Thats an enormous amount of energy and although Whitchurch-Stouffville only consumes a frac-tion of that amount, the town joins countless towns and cities across the world in Earth Hour 2016 to power down for one hour this Saturday, March 19 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

During that hour, the munici-pality will reduce its electricity con-sumption by turning off most lights at municipal offices and facilities. Lights needed for essential programs and public safety will remain lit.

Earth Hour is a worldwide grass-roots movement and an annual event supported by the World Wild-life Fund. Its purpose is to raise awareness about energy conserva-tion and climate change.

The town encourages residents and businesses to participate in the initiative by powering down on Sat-urday night on the designated hour.

Its not just Earth Hour that can reduce a heavy carbon footprint, but also taking transit, unplugging unused electrical appliances and washing clothes in cold water.

So, for at least an hour, turn off those computer screens, put down the smartphones and go for a walk, have a chat or play a game with friends and family, the town urges.

Selling a used car? Well, Ontario will soon release an exhaustive update on vehicle inspection standards that drivers will have to comply with before they can take that set of wheels out on the road.

The new changes will be effective July 1, 2016 and in anticipation of the update the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) in collaboration with AARO (Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario) is hold-ing information sessions in cities and towns across the province.

An industry info session was held Mon-day at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 459 in Stouffville. About 180 area auto shop owners and employees registered to attend the meeting.

This really hasnt been touched for 30 years, said Rick Callaghan, owner of 410 Auto on Sandiford Drive and member of the AARO board of directors.

The new changes are the first overhaul to Ontario Regulation 611 in the Highway

Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990. Callaghan believes the standards have been changed to adapt to the 21st century and indeed his point is reflective in the new updates.

New requirements have been added to powertrain, suspension, brakes, steer-ing, instruments and auxiliary equipment, lamps, electrical, body, tire and wheel, cou-pling devices and road tests. Additional details can be found on the MTO web-site: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/motor-vehicle-inspection-stations.shtml#passenger

This really hasnt been touched for

    30 years.

Most notably, there are new require-ments for newer technologies such as air-bags, ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control)/

Regulation 611 was amended last in Jan-uary 1992.

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is holding a pub-lic meeting Tuesday regarding a proposal of a 10-storey apartment building on Main Street.

The plot of land proposed for the location of the new apartment building is at 5531 Main St., located on the south side of Main Street between Sandiford Drive and Ringwood Drive.

The two-and-half acre site is under a zoning bylaw that will be changed during the meeting to allow for more housing units per hectare and a reduction of width for parking spaces and driving lanes. The proposed apartment building is expected to have 162 units with a ground floor commercial space for shops and services.

The zoning bylaw for the area would also need to be amended to increase the height allowance from 20 meters as it currently stands to 34 meters, the height of the proposed apartment building.

Currently, the land is being used for car sales from a small house and barn. Both buildings are proposed to be demolished to make room for the new building.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at council chambers on 111 Sandiford Dr. If you are not able to attend, council will accept written submissions of support or opposition until the meeting begins.

Its not every day you can travel from Stouffville to the Caribbean over to the British Isles making your way to the Middle East and back to Main Street again.

But on April 9 youll be able to do just that, without even leaving your seat. All thanks to a concert organized by Stouffville Cares, a local organization that brought a Syrian refugee family the Fandis to the town.

No passport required for this musical jour-ney at the Lebovic Centre for Arts & Entertain-ment - 19 on the Park.

It features four acts: two-time Juno-nominated Jason Wilson & The Perenni-als, Stouffvilles own alternative folk musi-cian Greg Mashinter, York Regions chorale The Tudor Consort and legendary musician George Dimitri Sawa, specializing in tradi-tional Arabic music.

The concert is in support of Syrian refu-gees and particularly acts as a warm welcome for the Fandis. The family can finally settle down, send their kids to school and live a dig-nified life after four years of being displaced from their home in Syria.

Its a struggle that more than 3 million Syrians have experienced since the civil war erupted in 2011, with 6.5 million still inter-nally displaced in the war-torn country.

The cause is great, our first family is won-derful, said Jason Wilson, who will perform with his band and is a member of Stouffville Cares. We are just as lucky as they are to have a wonderful family like them in our com-munity.

Wilson and The Perennials offer a jazzy-reggae sound. With his Scottish background and love of Caribbean music, hes melded the two worlds together in his music. The result is a sound like no other, taking you back and forth across the Atlantic.

Reggae is our go-to sound, Wilson said. Ive got a real affinity for folk music from Scotland, Ireland and England. Weve been fortunate enough to play in Canada, UK,

International sounds team up for refugees

    COMING UP

Jason Wilson & The Perennials are on the bill at a Stouffville Cares benefit next month.

Jamaica and lots of festivals.Hometown artist Greg Mashinter just

released his three-song EP Out Of Our Minds with fellow musician Dylan Walsh in Novem-ber. Hes also played a number of shows in Toronto.

The 14-voice Tudor Consort, which has performed sacred and secular music, will accompany the other three acts.

Sawa, dubbed as the legendary master of Arabic music, has a career spanning his whole life ever since he first learned piano in his native Alexandria, Egypt. He came to Canada in 1970, obtained his doctorate in historical Arabic musicology at the University of Toronto and specializes playing the Qanun, a traditional Arabic stringed instrument that most resembles a harp.

Aside from the Qanun, Sawa plays a num-ber of Arabic stringed and percussion instru-ments. His performances range from tradi-tional folk music from Egypt and Syria to popular contemporary Arabic songs.

Its a bit all over the map, but that makes for a real fun evening, Wilson said.

Youre not getting the same thing for a few hours.

Tickets are $35 + HST and are available online at nineteenonthepark.com or at the box office. The show starts at 7 p.m. on Satur-day, April 9.
