Hon. W. Gerard Asher Is At The Head Of The ParadeThe Honorable W. Gerard Asher is better

known to his family and friends as Jerry. Hewas born in Mineola in 1941 and moved toHuntington at age 13. Ever since, he hasbeen thoroughly engaged as a proactive cit-izen in Huntington. He graduated fromHuntington High School in 1959, where hewas president of the senior class, captain ofa championship football team, and teamcaptain of the basketball team. He went onto graduate from Princeton University in1963 and Cornell Law School in 1966.Jerry served two years in the U.S. Army.

As Captain, he was Commander of a HawkMissile Battery in Korea in 1968, for whichhe received an Army CommendationMedal. He is a lifetime member of VFW1469 and Post 360 of the American Legion. In 1969, Jerry returned to Huntington and

began a general practice of law, with an em-phasis in Real Estate, Surrogate Law, Litiga-tion, and Sports Law. He was certified by the

MLBPA as an agent for Major League Base-ball players working for and with Tony At-tanasio. In 36 years of practice, Jerry servedon numerous SCBA Committees, receivedtwo Pro Bono Awards, was a member of theSCBA Board of Directors, and was Presidentof the Huntington Lawyers’ Club from ‘82 to‘83. Throughout his career, he served on nu-merous community charitable and govern-ment organizations. Some of these includedhis 48-year membership in the Kiwanis Club,where he was twice a distinguished Presidentand a Hixon Award winner. He was an initialselection of a Congressional AchievementAward in 1984 for community service toLong Island. He was also a six-year memberof the Board of Directors of the HuntingtonTownship Chamber of Commerce, Chairmanof the Suffolk County Legislature Redistrict-ing Committee, and on several Blue RibbonCommittees for the Town of Huntington.Jerry was a dedicated member of the Hunt-

ington Planning Board for 17 years. He alsohas been a trustee of St. Anthony’s HighSchool for over 20 years.In 2004, Jerry was elected to District

Court, where he tried numerous criminalmatters, and was the Drug Court Judge forSuffolk County for two years. He was se-lected as Judge of the Year in 2009 by theSuffolk County Criminal Bar Association.In 2010, Jerry was elected Justice of theSupreme Court, serving in a Civil Part. The Asher family has been members of

St. Elizabeth RC Church for over 47 years.Jerry has been active in numerous min-

istries at St. Elizabeth’s over the years andcurrently serves as a Lector EEM and mem-ber of the Parish Counsel.Jerry has been married to his high school

sweetheart, Sylvia, for 56 years, and theyare the proud parents of two adult children:Gigi and Lara. Jerry has marched in the Huntington St.

Patrick’s Day parade as an AOH brother for18 years and has been an active member ofthe AOH Division 4. He is honored andhumbled to be the Grand Marshal of Hunt-ington’s 86th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

at this years’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Shebegan as a Wee Colleen at age 6 and has en-joyed marching in numerous parades withthe AOH Div. 4 in Huntington.Kayla is a senior at St. Anthony’s High

School and is involved in many LeadershipClubs and Societies. She is a member of theMath, Social Studies and National Honor So-cieties, and the Future Business Leaders Ini-tiative, St. Anthony’s Leadership Team, FriarFaithfuls, and the Kolbe & Claire Societywhich leads the schools religious retreats.

In addition to the many clubs, Kayla hasenjoyed being on the Varsity Kickline Teamthroughout her years at St. Anthony’s.Kayla’s love for dancing started at age 2. Sheis a senior dancer at Stars of TomorrowDance Academy in Huntington Station andhas been recognized with many dance awardsat the Regional and National level. Huntington Hibernians since being a WeeColleen at 6 years old and has marched inmany Huntington St. Patrick’s Day Paradeswith her family.

She is a busy senior at Smithtown EastHigh School and is the only daughter ofAOH Division 4 Hibernian member andPast President, Greg Kennedy and CathleenKennedy.

Sara has a younger brother Ryan.Sara is currently a National Honor Soci-

ety and French Honor Society senior atSmithtown East High School, and after re-

ceiving many acceptances from diverse col-leges, she has chosen to attend SUNY Cort-land in the Fall of 2020 to pursue her degreein Early Child Development/Child Psy-chology.

Sara is involved in numerous clubs andactivities at Smithtown East. She was Cap-tain of the Junior Varsity Cheerleadingteam and as a current Varsity Cheerleadingteam member, was recently honored tocompete in the UCA National High SchoolCheerleading Championship in Florida.She also has volunteered in teaching ele-mentary cheer to students in grade school

throughout her district.Sara’s interest in Early Child Develop-

ment led her to be an active member inProject Lead The Way, which providestransformative learning experiences forPreK-12 students and teachers across theU.S. She enjoys learning how to create en-gaging, hands-on classroom environmentsthat help empower students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills they need tothrive.

LI’s Largest and Oldest St. Patrick’s ParadeThe Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH)

Division 4 will host its 86th annual Hunt-ington St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday,March 8, 2020. The parade kicks-off at 2 pmnear the Huntington LIRR train station andproceeds north along New York Avenue(Rte. 110) before turning west onto MainStreet (Rte. 25A) and ending at St. Patrick’sChurch.This grand parade has a rich history dat-

ing back to the early 1930’s when the nationwas in the grips of the Great Depression.Finnegan’s opened the day after Prohibi-tion ended to cater to the growing popula-tion of Irish workers. Down the street, Va-lencia Tavern opened on the very same dayto cater to the Italian laborers.Although times were tough, a great com-

munity tradition was started when the entiretown came together to celebrate the first St.Patrick’s Day Parade held anywhere onLong Island.Eighty-six years later residents continue

to celebrate the unofficial start of spring onthe second Sunday of March when the St.Patrick’s Parade marches through Hunting-ton village. On Sunday, members of theIrish-American fraternal organization theAncient Order of Hibernians will againmarch dressed in their distinctive graymorning suit tuxedos.At the head of the parade will be Grand

Marshal Honorable W. Gerard “Jerry”Asher leading bands, schoolchildren and

scouts, fire departments and communitygroups to the reviewing stand at the westernend of Main Street.The core of the parade is of course the

bagpipe bands and no parade on Long Is-land can match Huntington’s lineup. Pipebands from all over the Island and NewYork City consider Huntington to be one ofthe finest parades around. This year the pa-rade will include an impressive 19 pipebands, including Clann Eireann Irish PipeBand, the parade’s lead pipe band fordecades. Brooklyn-based Clann Eireann isthe oldest, continuous independent PipeBand in the United States. New York City’sworld-class NYPD Emerald Society Bandand the famed Northport Pipe and DrumBand are among the kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing marchers that will delight thousandsof spectators on the parade route.This year brings some exciting new pa-

rade participants, and the return of EmpireState Snow Dogs Association with 100snow dogs. “Mush!”Ancient Order of Hibernians members
