he holiday shopping season, and all that comes with it, is almost upon us – the crowds, the line-ups, and the stresses of finding the ideal gift can take away from the

joy of the season. With all the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to forget that there is an easier way. Downtown St. Catharines offers you an alternative shopping venue this season, with bright warm boutiques, cozy cafés and restaurants, and a variety of great gift ideas, products, and services that you won’t find in any single venue anywhere else in Niagara. The crowds are smaller, the pace is slower, the lines are shorter, and the hospitality is unsurpassed. Downtown St. Catharines invites you to visit anytime – you’re always welcome – but be sure to drop by between December 4 and December 15, during our 12 Days of Christmas promotion

and contest. Make a purchase at any of over 100 participating shops and restaurants, and you’ll be entered to win one of twelve $200 daily prizes, or one of three grand prizes of $1500, $1000 and $500 in Downtown Gift Certificates. The variety is exceptional: Top notch fashions for men and women, personal electronics and cellphones, home theatre systems, unique housewares and furnishings, designer jewellery, rings and watches, and a wide range of specialty boutiques for collectors, artists, and hobbyists of all kinds. Between the shops, enjoy a light lunch, a warming beverage, or stay for dinner in Niagara’s premier culinary neighbourhood. Take your time, explore Downtown St. Catharines, you’ll be impressed.

We hope you’ll join us, and we wish you Happy Holidays, and Good Luck!

t is not unusual to have people hang around until 9 pm on a Friday night talking about model trains and RC’s with our employees,” comments Mark Lounsbury, who

currently operates the store with his wife Cheryl, “Since the beginning, Niagara Central Hobbies has just been that kind of place.” Niagara Central Hobbies first opened its doors in 1947 on King Street. Jack Stewart, Mark’s grandfather, and his friend Henry Bartel actually began it as a retirement project. Both worked at McKinnon’s (now GM) and would work at the shop after their shifts and on the weekends. Jack’s wife Billie and their daughter Marie ran the business during the week. Marie’s husband Ray Lounsbury joined the business and the two partners retired shortly after. The couple moved the business to 395 St. Paul Street in 1974 and eventually expanded to include the building next door. Marie and Ray owned and operated the store until 2010 when they sold the business to their son Mark and his wife Cheryl. Luckily for those who have made Niagara Central Hobbies their “go-to” for hobby and art supplies, Mark and Cheryl have kept many of the store’s unique features alive. Where else can you sip a cup of freshly brewed coffee while browsing the merchandise? Ray’s tradition of starting the first pot of coffee every morning for employees and customers alike

lives on. Many of St.Catharines’ children fondly remember the Thomas & Friends display and play table. Kids, both big and small, still look forward to putting their hand to a very particular spot on the storefront’s display window, making the model train move! The hand and the train have been around since 1967. “When I was a kid, my siblings and I would run over to the store whenever we could to make that train move,” says Cheryl fondly. Of course, it is not just fond memories that keep customers coming. The select stock of high-quality art supplies also means Niagara Central Hobbies is the place where local artists come to replenish their paints, brushes, canvas and more. The store also carries a wide range of model train and RC (radio controlled) supplies. In fact, an entire side of the store is dedicated to all of the items a model train or RC hobbyist could ever require. The central downtown location is also a plus as it is convenient for hobby enthusiasts from St. Catharines and across the globe from all walks of life and professions to visit. In fact, it is this group of loyal customers, coupled with longstanding service excellence and outstanding products, that have made Niagara Central Hobbies what it is today.

a modelof successFor 65 years, Niagara Central Hobbies has been doing business in St.Catharines by providing customers with a combination of superb customer service, a welcoming retail environment and an excellent selection of hobby, art and craft supplies.
