MauriceRavel(1875-1937)composedhisStringQuartetinFmajorin1903.Thesecondmovementisastrikingscherzofeaturingbouncypizzicatopassagesintheopeningandclosing,andcontrastingslow,dreamlike,bowedmaterialinthecenter.Tosimulatethepizzicatotimbreontheharpinthisarrangement,harpistsshouldpressamuteagainstthestringsnearthesoundboardwithonehandwhilepluckingwiththeotherhand.Followthedirectionsbelowtobuildatwo-endedmutethatcanbehungaroundthehigheststringandrestonthesoundboardforeitherhandtoeasilyandquicklyaccess.

Materialsneeded:• Twowoodendowels(.25”x12”,orsimilar)• Twofeltsquares(9”x12”,orsimilar;singlesideadhesiveifavailable)• Elasticcord(1mmorsimilar;• Tapeorglue(ifusingglue,choosesuperglue,orhotglue)

Creatingyourharpmute:

1. Cut35”to45”ofelasticcord.(Ifyouwillbeplayingharpparts1or2,youwilllikelyneedlesslengthduetotheirhigherregisters,andifyouwillbeplayingharpparts3or4,youwilllikelyneedmorelengthduetotheirlowerregisters.)

2. Attachoneendoftheelastictothedowel,around1”fromtheendofthedowelwithglueortape.Attachtheotherendoftheelastictotheotherdowel,around1”fromitsend.

3. Attachoneedgeofafeltsquaretothedowelwithtape,glue,oritsadhesivebacking.Tightlyrolltherestofthefeltaroundthedowel,andsecuretheremainingendwithtape,glue,oritsadhesivebacking.

4. Hangthemutearoundthehigheststringofyourharp,lettingbothfeltpieceshangalongthesoundboard.
