S T R I V E • R I S E • T H R I V EALL CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO ADHERE TO THE AISES CODE OF CONDUCT.

“SAFE CAMP”

The AISES National Conference is a “Safe Camp,” meaning this is a welcoming, inclusive, supportive and safe environment for all our AISES family members regardless of race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or gender expression/identity. Safe Camp includes recognizing the AISES Code of Conduct and anyone found violating the code will be asked to leave the conference immediately. Please contact any AISES Staff member or board member if you have any questions.

“CODE OF CONDUCT”

The American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) was established with the goal of developing Native professionals and leaders in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. In light of this goal, the first student leaders of AISES developed a set of principles that prohibited alcohol, illegal drugs, and harassment. These principals have become core values of the organization and are incorporated as the Code of Conduct.

The AISES Code of Conduct promotes professional development and personal growth by strictly prohibiting the use of intoxicating drugs or alcohol and all forms of harassment and discrimination. This code is meant to reflect the ideals of our Native communities by establishing an expectation that we agree to protect and promote the well-being and growth of all people. This code is expected to be honored when individuals are representing the AISES organization and by all persons participating in AISES activities. To this end, each person is asked to adhere to this code and promote its intent by refraining from prohibited activities and encouraging others to do the same.

AISES will continue to maintain the Code of Conduct as a symbol reflective of the teachings and values of our ancestors. The Code of Conduct represents the ideas and visions set forth by the AISES founders and the student leadership. AISES values and respects the rights and privileges of others and asks that you honor the AISES organization, its mission, and the family of AISES by adhering to this Code of Conduct.

Welcome!

A warm welcome to sunny Phoenix, Arizona and the 37th annual AISES National Conference! The AISES National Conference has become the premier event for Native American Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professionals and students and hosts the largest College and Career Fair for American Indians.

This year we invite each of you to STRIVE, RISE and THRIVE to be and do your very best! Please take some time to read through the program in detail so you can be sure to take advantage of the many opportunities presented over the next three days. If you’re willing to engage and participate – and stretch beyond your comfort zone – you’ll discover ways to increase your networks, build your skills, support your education, and develop your career path.

In keeping with our conference theme, Olympic Gold Medalist, Billy Mills, will share a very inspirational keynote address during our opening ceremony leaving you feeling ready to STRIVE, RISE and THRIVE at the conference! The Opening Ceremony will be immediately followed by our networking suites which have now become one of the most popular events of the conference. Be sure to come by the suites for incredible networking opportunities and some great food!

If you’re a student, we hope you’re registered to attend the 3M Plenary Lunch Session on Saturday where you are invited to participate in a fun hands-on inventors’ activity. If you have not registered, inquire with registration as there may still be limited space available.

And, of course, your AISES conference experience will not be truly complete without the opportunity to interact with the amazing AISES Council of Elders. Be sure to attend the Morning Blessing Ceremony on Friday as well as the women’s/men’s, and closing talking circles. These opportunities are what truly makes the AISES Conference experience unique.

The closing awards banquet is always an amazing evening and this year, AISES has invited Native American artist, Bunky Echo-Hawk, to provide us with a live art performance where he will create a painting just ahead of the banquet kick-off. The painting will then be placed in a silent auction with the proceeds from the sale benefiting AISES. During the conference, you will have the opportunity to contribute your ideas to inspire Mr. Echo-Hawk’s painting. The banquet itself will include honoring our student and professional award winners – with the stories of our most inspirational members portrayed though inspiring videos.

Finally, please plan to attend the AISES Pow Wow directly following the closing awards banquet. The pow wow is a wonderful way to close your AISES conference experience and is open to all.

Thank you for being part of our AISES Family. Enjoy the conference and start planning now for Minneapolis in 2016!

Richard “Rick” Stephens Sarah EchoHawk Chair, Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

Who is Billy Mills?

Billy Mills was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Although Pine Ridge is very rich in culture and spirit, it is continually recognized economically as one of the poorest communities in America with unemployment reaching 80%.

Billy was orphaned by the age of 12 and sent to boarding schools. He graduated from high school at Haskell Indian School. Billy became involved in distance running and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Kansas. Never winning a major race in track and field or cross country, he continued to show promise by his performances, making All American seven times. Upon graduation from the University of Kansas, Billy was commissioned an officer in the United States Marine Corps., and continued training for the Olympic Team. He made the Olympic team in two events, the marathon and the 10,000 meter run. He had trained his body, mind and soul for “Peak Performance.” And the world was about to see the greatest upset in Olympic history unfold.

He has received five honorary doctorates, and is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Citation, the highest honor that the University of Kansas Alumni Association can bestow upon an individual to acknowledge outstanding achievement for the betterment of mankind. A major motion picture has been made about Billy, titled “Running Brave,” and has been a positive influence on many of our American youth. Billy Mills was recognized on several end-of-the-millennium lists, including being chosen as Sports Illustrated’s Athlete of the Century for the state of South Dakota.

In 2013 Billy won the second highest honor that is awarded to a civilian - the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Obama. On January 17, 2014 the National Collegiate Athletic Association presented Billy the highest award they give to an individual: The Teddy Roosevelt Award. On October 27, 2014 Billy was honored at the Anti-Defamation League’s Concert Against Hate at the JFK Center. Bunky Echo-Hawk is a multi-talented artist whose work spans both media and lifestyle. A graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts, he is a fine artist, graphic designer, photographer, writer and a non-profit professional. Bunky is a traditional singer and dancer of the Pawnee Nation and an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation.

Throughout his career, he has merged traditional values with his lifestyle and art. He has exhibited in major exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally, including in NYC, Chicago, Denver, Santa Fe, and Frankfurt, Germany, to name a few. His poetry has been published in magazines and anthologies, and his plays have been performed and produced across the nation.

Bunky speaks at conferences, conducts workshops and teaches both art and writing. As an advocate and an educator, Bunky travels extensively, creating live works of art for auction. Through his art, Bunky has raised thousands of dollars for non-profits. Bunky begins the performance by creating a dialogue with the audience, where socially relevant and meaningful discussion takes place. He guides the audience through conceptualizing a painting, which he creates on the spot for the host organization, while participants continue to contribute their ideas, opinions and personal testimony.

In 2006, Bunky co-founded NVision, serving as Executive Director until 2009. NVision is a nonprofit collective of Native American artists, musicians, community organizers, and nonprofit professionals who focus on Native American youth empowerment through multimedia arts.

Bunky is the 2012 Eiteljorg Museum Artist in Residence. In 2008, the First Peoples Fund named him a Business in Leadership Fellow. Bunky was also nominated for the United States Artist Fellowship in 2008 and received the 2008 Boulder County Multicultural Award.

Nike signed Bunky in 2010, to design for the Nike N7 line. Bunky lives and works in Pawnee, Oklahoma.

Technical Excellence:

Sarah Lauff—Sarah, a Shawnee, is a Radio Frequency Wireless Engineer and Mathematician for the U.S. Navy. She is an active AISES member, participating in the National Conference as both a presenter and a recruiter. Sarah has not only proven her technical excellence, but she also gives back to the community, as reflected through her ability to mentor students of all backgrounds and provide a model to show girls and women that they are capable of anything.

Most Promising Engineer or Scientist:

Dr. Franklin Dollar—A member of the Dry Creek Band of Pomo Indians, Franklin was recently named Assistant Professor at UC Irvine. As such, he will be only the second American Indian Physics professor at a top 50 school in the US, and the third in the top 100. Academically and professionally, there is no question that Dr. Dollar has been successful, having completed a B.S. in Engineering Physics at the University of California, Berkeley (2006) and a M.S.E. in Electrical Engineering (2010) and Ph.D. in Applied Physics (2012), both from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. These STEM degrees alone set him among an incredibly small number of other American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN). He has a strong commitment to AISES, beginning as a student representative when he was an undergrad.

The Ely S. Parker Award is the highest honor bestowed by AISES, in honor of the first recognized American Indian scientist/engineer. This award recognizes high achievements and contributions to the STEM and educational communities. The Ely S. Parker Award acknowledges innovative contributions, the ability to overcome obstacles facing minorities in their fields, and the recipient’s scope and level of responsibility. Furthermore, the Award recipient is selected based on his/her potential as a role model. The Award is selected by the AISES Board of Directors. The 2015 Ely S. Parker Award Recipient will be announced at the Honors Banquet on Saturday night; be sure to attend to see who the 2015 deserving recipient is!

Feeding Ourselves: Food Access, Health Disparities, and the Pathways to Healthy Native American Communities - Janie Simms Hipp, University of Arkansas - Room 125B“Feeding Ourselves: Food Access, Health Disparities, and the Pathways to Healthy Native American Communities” is a comprehensive report on the state of food access in Native American communities, and the resulting health disparities in Native Americans. The report – commissioned by the American Heart Association (AHA) and its Voices for Healthy Kids®, a joint initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and AHA – explores the effects of now-repudiated federal policies that forcibly separated Native peoples from their historical land and traditional sources of food, leading to pernicious health problems for all Native communities. The epidemics of obesity and diabetes in Native communities, even among Native American children, are direct consequences of limited access to healthy food. Feeding Ourselves examines success stories from grassroots programs in tribal communities that inspire and educate and provides specific pathways for tribes, the federal government, and philanthropists to empower Native people to solve these difficult problems.

The Role of Mentor: Building a Partnership for Success - Chris Kyselka, Arizona State University - Room 122BWhile endeavors to promote academic success for American Indians in STEM fields continue to emerge, programs are not the only solution available to help students and working professionals thrive in the academic and career environment. Mentoring is another solution that is important to consider as research indicates that American Indian students and career professionals can potentially thrive due to a strong connection with their environment and affiliation with a role model.

This interactive session intends to help attendees understand and appreciate how influential their experience and talents can be to others. By learning more about the impact and process of mentoring, attendees will be able to consider their own mentoring capabilities and advocate for mentoring in their companies and organizations.

Thriving and Resilience in STEM - Agnes Attakai, Center for American Indian Resilience University of Arizona - Room 122C Participants will individually identify stressors and assets that create challenges and help them to succeed in STEM fields. Participants will complete a Wellness Map where they will draw symbols of stressors and assets on paper, then discuss and share their illustrations among their peers. This will provide an opportunity to dialogue about personal experiences and investigate resilient strategies.

It IS All About Who You Know! - Andrea D. Wieland, Community College of Denver - Room 123 An interactive session about learning how to put your best foot forward and network to find jobs and advance your career.

Green & Clean - Energy Projects to Sustain Tribal Communities - Sandra Begay-Campbell, Sandia National Laboratories - Room 125BLearn from tribal energy interns about how tribes can strive to create sustainable communities through use of green and clean energy. Renewable energy development projects are considered appropriate for Native American communities because green and clean energy generation has a lower environmental impact, less carbon intensive, and harmonizes well with nature, which is consistent with many tribal cultures. These types of projects can help raise tribal members’ quality of life through increased access to energy or electricity. Successful tribal projects will be briefly presented to demonstrate how particular tribes are thriving thru the generation of their own energy projects.

Patents: Making your ideas count - Sarah Lauff, SPAWAR - Room 125B During this workshop, participants will learn about the exciting world of patents and that the ability to get a patent isn’t as far off as most would think. This session covers what a patent is (and isn’t), how a participant can go about getting a patent, some likely pitfalls, and interesting examples of patents from the decades.

3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
