The recent Sports Assembly acknowledged the many individual, team and house achievements across 2016. Our
congratulations to all award winners and special thanks to Mr Kennedy for his organization of this event and the

As a community we celebrated our end of year Mass on Tuesday 13 December special thanks to Fr Joe, Mr
O’Neill, Ms Flocco, Mr O’Donnell, Mr Collins and the many students who took on roles. It was pleasing to see

Congratulations to the many students who received awards on Presentation Day. These awards are an
acknowledgement of the excellent achievement by students across subjects and also in relation to community
based aspects of Magdalene. Special thanks to Ms Foldes and Mrs Forner for their leadership and organization

Farewell to staff
Ms Hynes for the past 17 years has taught Science and has held a number of roles including Science
Coordinator. We wish Ms Hynes every success as she begins her work at Mt Carmel Catholic College
Varroville in 2017. Thank you for the positive impact you have made on so many students during your
time at Magdalene.
Ms Benny has been at Magdalene for 16.5 years, teaching Visual Art across Year 7-12 and more recently
teaching in Learning support. We wish Ms Benny success and happiness as she takes on the role of Learn-
ing Support teacher at John Therry Catholic High School in 2017. Thank you for your tireless dedication
to the students, staff and parents of the Magdalene community.
Mrs Galvin has worked at Magdalene for 10 years as a Support Staff Officer and has been the face of the
school to so many students as they have enrolled at Magdalene. She has also treated and cared for many
students and staff as First Aid Officer. Mrs Galvin will be joining the staff at St Francis Edmondson Park
in 2017, the newest and only K-12 school in the Diocese of Wollongong. Whilst it will be a challenging
role it will be equally exciting as she sees the young people develop over the coming years and we wish
her success and happiness. Thank you for the care and many contributions you have made at Magdalene.
Mrs Gai Pastor will be leaving Magdalene after 6 years working in the role as School Counsellor. Her
work is of a nature where most people do not see the positive impact she has had on so many students at
Magdalene. We thank Mrs Pastor for all that she has given to our community and wish her success in her
new role as she moves around the Diocese supporting other counsellors in their work.
Mrs Harris has been at Magdalene for 3 years working in the area of Support Staff Lab Assistant where
she has supported the work of the Science Teachers particularly in practical Science lessons. She was an
active member of the WHS committee and we thank Mrs Harris for all her contributions and wish her
success as she moves across to Oran Park Anglican.
Mrs Colella has worked at Magdalene for 1.5 years in PDHPE , coaching teams and as an Assistant Year 9
& 10 Coordinator. As she prepares to welcome her baby early in 2017 we wish her joy and happiness for
this next stage of life and thank her for all that she has given to Magdalene.
Mrs Fernandes has worked fulltime across 2016 and we thank her for the teaching and care of students and
wish her success in her teaching role at Mt Carmel Catholic College.
Thank you to Ms Casuscelli as she has worked here full time since Term 2 and we wish her success as she
undertakes a Masters of Occupational Therapy in 2017.
To Mr Webb we thank you for your work this term in replacing Mr Mäe and to the many casual teachers
who have worked across the year, we thank you for your work and support of our school.
As 2016 draws to a close I thank all staff for their tireless work through out the year and all students for
their work and contributions. On behalf of Mr Lo Cascio I thank all parents for your ongoing support.
As I take my leave of this great community I sincerely thank all staff, students and parents for making me
feel so welcome and for the opportunity to share your journey in 2016. Magdalene is a special place and I
feel privileged to have been part of this community over the past six months. I wish Mr Matthew
McMahon success and fulfillment in his role as Principal of Magdalene.
Wishing everyone in the Magdalene community a Holy Christmas, Happy New Year and restful holiday
season. My prayers and best wishes will be with you in 2017 and beyond.

Young Writers Competition
154 students from Years 10 and 11 and 17 Greater Western Sydney high schools took part in the seventh
annual Western Sydney University Young Writers' Day on 16 September 2016 at the Campbelltown
campus. Luke Summers, Maddison Saysanavongpheth, Stephanie Robinson, Mckenzie
Duguid, Siobhan Suters, Danielle Flood, Katelyn Beller, Jayden McAllister, Julia Musico and Brandon
Shaw went with Mrs Antal to represent Magdalene.
The day began with a keynote presentation by Ms Fiona Wright, award-winning author and doctoral
candidate in the Western Sydney University Writing and Society Research Group. The keynote
was followed by a choice of 15 different writing workshops. Each student participated in two workshops;
one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Workshops were facilitated by academics and authors
including Michael Mohammed Ahmad, Richard James Allen, Barbara Alysen, Lilly Blue, Luke Carman,
Louise Carter, Bernard Cohen, Ben Etherington, Lynn Garlick, Dr Rachel Morley, Felicity
Plunkett, Murray Robertson, Candy Royalle, Katie Sutherland and Anna Westbrook. James Roy ran a
workshop for teachers on 'Other People's Secrets: organic, dynamic characters for creative writings'.
There was a post-event writing competition for the students, with prizes including up to five conditional
academic excellence scholarships for future study at Western. The entries were 'blind' judged by a
University-appointed panel.
We are very pleased to be able to announce that Maddison Saysanavongpheth (10D) has been named as
a winner. She will receive a conditional scholarship offer for undergraduate study at Western Sydney
University; $5000 per annum for up to four years. Winners also received an Apple iPad Air 2 16GB WiFi
tablet. Congratulations to Maddison and all of the Magdalene students who had this opportunity to share
their love of writing.
Mr Ewen Sinclair-Kidd
Year 10 students Lauren Avero, Katelyn Beller, Ben Carroll, and Brandon Shaw (pictured
above), were chosen to be part of a Cybersafety initiative in conjunction with the local Police
Department and the CEO Wollongong. The students were asked to design a program that would
be presented to schools across all the Wollongong Diocese on the importance of Cybersafety and
common pitfalls that befall many high school students while surfing the world wide web.

Childrens Hospital Westmead Visit
On Monday 12 December students from the Year 11 Information Process
and Technology class visited the Children’s Hospital at Westmead for two
special reasons. The first was to deliver a cheque for just over $6000
which was raised through this years annual Magdalene Trivia Night
hosted by the Year 11 IPT Class. This money will go towards new
equipment and facilities at the hospital to support sick kids and their
families.
The second reason for the visit was to allow our IPT students the chance
to see what their work and efforts with the Trivia Night and the money
raised means in a very real way for the hospital and the families of sick kids. As well as touring the
impressive facility the sutdents also had the chance to dress in character costumes and interact with
patients in the hospital spreading good tides at this festive season, as well as entertaining the patients
and their families with bubbles, stickers and friendly chat.
The students were a credit to the school and their families and gained a tremendous experience and
several important life lessons form the visit.
Mr Collins
Once again in 2016 the school community has
supported the annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas
appeal by putting together 40 hampers that will go to
people in need in our community via the Picton Bargo
and The Oaks chapters of Vinnies.
The hampers included gifts and food items that we
hope will make Christmas special for the families that
Vinnies help. A big thank you to our entire school
community (students, families and staff) for your
support of all Mission activities this year. We
certainly have done our bit to bring a little more
Mercy, Peace and Hope to our world.

Magdalene Impressions
On the evening of Tuesday 29th November Magdalene Catholic High School celebrated the artistic talent and hard
work of Visual Arts and Photography students at the Annual Magdalene Impressions Exhibition. This event
provided an opportunity to showcase the high standard of artistic work at Magdalene. On display were works from
Year 7 to Year 11 students including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography.
Special guest, Edwina Hill, Education Officer from Campbelltown Art Centre, opened the exhibition and spoke
enthusiastically about careers in the Arts, sharing valuable experiences of her own career path. Ms Hill, along with
Mr John Lo Cascio, Head of School Improvement, Wollongong Catholic Education Office; Mr Chris Patterson,
local Member for Camden presented students from each Visual Arts and Photography class with prizes and
certificates for ‘Excellence in Art’ and ‘Effort and Diligence’.

was presented to Bronte Perigo at our school assembly last week.
The Visual Arts Department would like to thank our very talented musician Renee Ryan for providing live music on
the night supported by music teacher Mr Brandon O’Donnell. Also members of Magdalene’s Student
Representative Council ensured the smooth running for the evening by meeting and greeting guests and catering.
Finally we would like to thank parents for recognising their child’s enthusiasm for the Visual Arts by attending the
Magdalene Impressions Exhibition and supporting their child’s burgeoning talent by allowing creativity to flourish
in their homes.

Science Fair
On Wednesday 30th November five students and Mr Chris Whicker journeyed to the University of
Wollongong to participate in the Illawarra Science Fair. The Year 7 team consisted of Christina David, Vince
Arcadi and Joseph Bampton. The students examined the role of temperature on the growth of mould on
strawberries. Their experiment showed that if you left strawberries out at temperatures of around 20oC it would
take on average 360 hrs for them to be completely covered in mould.
The Year 8 team consisted of Hayden Richards and Brayden Taylor. These boys used the school’s 3-D
printer to create a prosthetic hand. They then tested it’s suitability as an alternate to the ones created from
specialized occupational therapists and technicians.

Dear Parents/Carers
SCHOOL FEE MANAGEMENT 2017 The Catholic Education Office has released a new Diocesan School Fee Management Policy for the management of school fees across all systemic Catholic schools in the Diocese of Wollongong. This policy will take effect from January 2017 and will be made available for you to view on our school’s website. This document provides schools and families with detailed information regarding school fee administrative processes including invoicing, payment mechanisms, sibling discounts, how to apply for fee concession and actions in the case of non-payment.
A summary of the main features of this policy that affect our school is as follows: INVOICING AND DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOOL FEE STATEMENTS As of 2017, schools will move to annual invoicing of accounts. This will replace our usual method of invoicing over the first three terms of the year. It is anticipated that the annual invoice will be distributed in late February or early March each year. Accounts are due 30 days after the date of invoice unless a periodic payment arrangement is made with the school. In-voices and account statements will still be distributed to all parents/carers, either by email or sent home in hard copy via Aus-tralia Post.
SCHOOL FEE AGREEMENTS Paying school fees periodically over the duration of the school year is still offered and families who wish to take advantage of this flexibility, rather than pay within 30 days, will need to have in place a current School Fee Agreement to advise their pre-ferred method of school fee payment, amount and frequency. For your convenience, this Agreement will be emailed to you with school fee statement and will also be available on the school’s website.
The School Fee Agreement requires you to advise the amount of your periodic payment. An online ‘School Fee Calculator’ will be available on the school’s website to assist in the determination of the payment amount. School Fee Agreements may also be accessed through the school’s administration office. Please return the agreement to the school office as soon as possible with any applicable payment authorities. Families who do not return agreements will be subject to payment within 30 days.
As offered in the past, there are a range of flexible payment options open to Parents/Carers as follows:
If you are currently paying periodically, it is necessary to review your payment using the ‘School Fee Calculator’ as the amount invoiced varies from year to year with increases in fees, and the changing profile of your family. Please submit an amended School Fee Agreement for any new payment amount or change in method of payment. Naturally, Direct Debit and Centrepay payments will require an amended authority.
FINANCIAL HARDSHIP
If your family is experiencing genuine financial hardship, please contact the school’s finance office to make an appointment with the Principal to confidentially discuss your situation. Please do not hesitate to contact the school finance office if you require explanation or assistance in relation to school fee matters.
METHODS OF PAYMENT OFFERED:
BPay Payment Biller Code and Payment References on statements
Direct Debit Available on the school’s website or school office
Credit Card Facility is printed on statements EFTPOS Available in the school office
Cash/Cheque Payment at the school office Centrepay Available from the school office
FREQUENCY OF PAYMENT: Periodical Payments may be made Weekly, Fortnightly or Monthly on a date that suits the family budget.
