Welcome to Kirklees Safeguarding Week

9 to 15 October 2017

Safeguarding. It’s everyone’s business

Kirklees Safeguarding Week is returning for a second year as part of the West Yorkshire wide Safeguarding Week.

Last year’s week of safeguarding awareness-raising was very well received and this year it is our aim to build on that and make it even better!

This year, the 3 board partnership (Kirklees Children Safeguarding Board (KSCB),

Kirklees Safeguarding Adult Board (KSAB) and Community Safety Partnership (CSP) are doing things slightly differently. Each Board has its own dedicated day

for events:

Monday 9 October - joint 3 Board Launch day

Tuesday 10 October - KSCB day

Wednesday 11 October - KSAB day

Thursday 12 October - CSP day

Friday 13 October – KSCB & YOT

Details: Steve Barnes, Safeguarding Schools Officer will deliver a workshop which emphasises the importance of listening to the voice of the child and how co-ordinated work by a number of professionals can have a huge impact on the child’s life.

What is a Serious Case Review? Decision, Process and Learning

Time: 09:30am-11:00am

Venue: Fantastic Media Suite, John Smith Stadium, Stadium Way, Huddersfield HD1 6PG

Target audience: Professionals, staff

Details: The first part of this session aims to increase delegates’ knowledge of the Serious Case Review (SCR) process including the purpose of SCRs and how and when they are carried out. It will consider the different ways in which practitioners and managers may become involved in SCRs and the opportunities and anxieties that such involvement can bring. The second part will consider local and national lessons that have emerged from recent SCRs and how these lessons can impact upon local services and your work. The session will contain a presentation, discussion within small groups and questions from delegates. It will be led by Peter Ward who has a background in social work and safeguarding and who has been involved in undertaking SCRs since 2005.

the life course

Trans Awareness Session

Details: Helping staff to feel comfortable and confident working with Trans and gender variant people, and to know how to be a good Trans ally and promote Trans rights

Scams, Frauds & Doorstep Crime

Details: West Yorkshire Joint Services (WYJS) SAFER Project talk about the types of scams and frauds in circulation, how to avoid them and where to report them to. They will also talk about doorstep crime and how to deal with cold callers.

The session is interactive and informal and encourages participants to share their experiences, focusing on how to deal with scammers confidently and what the most common scams in circulation are.

Social Media as a Catalyst for Offending by Young People Time: 11.30am – 12.30pm

Details: Huddersfield University Applied Department of Criminology and Kirklees Youth Offending Team are in the process of undertaking a joint research project which aims to explore and explain the breath of the relationship between young people’s use of social media and offending behaviour. This session will report on progress so far, offer some preliminary findings and explain the potential scope for further research in this surprisingly understudied area.

It will cover the following:- • The genesis of the research project. • The potential links between ever increasing prevalence of use of social media by young people and offending. • Research Methodology. • Challenges in undertaking this work. • Preliminary findings – including the development of a typology of social media related offending and its application in the research. • Future scope of the research and its potential application. • Q&A

Details: You and your colleagues are invited to a market place drop in session for professionals to discover how safeguarding is integral to the work of KNH and Kirklees Housing. It will be a chance to put a face to a name and meet some of our safeguarding champions who work with families, vulnerable adults in the community and help to raise awareness with housing colleagues.

Come and talk to our champions to see how we can work together to keep the people of Kirklees safe and achieve positive outcomes.

We are focusing on two events the first “We are the champions” marketplace champions launch event and “Breakfast Banter”- raising awareness around mental health over breakfast. We have joined with the workplace mental health champions in order to have a focus on our own mental health as well as supporting our customers who have mental health issues.
