Introductory Remarks
• It is an honor to serve the TC as chair for the 2014-2016 term!!
• We have been blessed with outstanding leadership over the past decade Jeanette Domber, Steve Engelstad, Michael Hyer,
Mary Mahler Roybal have made numerous and ongoing contributions to the TC
Tough acts to follow!
• My plan is to build on their successes and accomplishments
Personal Approach to TC Chair Role
• Management by consensus• Open and frequent communication• Big tent policy
Diversity of backgrounds and interests Give everyone a chance to apply their skills and
talents
• Facilitator for TC members and friends
Subcommittee Structure
• The existing subcommittee structure will remain in place Steering Awards Procedures Education Student Papers NEM Transition
• One additional subcommittee suggested Strategic Planning
• Will reach out to current subcommittee chairs individually and schedule rotating telecons
• Contact me if interested in Strategic Planning subcommittee opportunity
Strategic Planning Subcommittee
• Document the long term goals of the TC (5 year horizon) Educational outreach to current students Continuing education for professionals Liaisons with other technical committees (TCs), program
committees (PCs) Publications, communications with the aerospace community Interactions with other industry-wide working groups (e.g. CMH-
17, MMPDS)
• Living document - update every 1 to 2 years• Input to be solicited from entire TC
Communication
• Email communications AIAA announcements, TAC guidance, TC bulletins Items of special interest
• Telecon meetings (4 to 6 week intervals) Rotate through subcommittees Others welcome to call-in Start in March 2014 Triumph call-in numbers available – will also research AIAA
options• Mid-year meeting at selected site
Some Near Term Goals
1. Provide input to Harry Hilton for the annual Aerospace America article
Forward structures news items, links to more detailed information
Review your organization’s public communications to work around the approvals issue
Consider writing a longer article on structures developments for the AIAA community
2. Update the Structures TC Guidebook document to reflect the new event model (NEM)
