ADVENT COMES . . . ADVENT GOES

My, my, my . . . I look so forward to Advent each year . . . and then it's over before I know it. Hard to believe this is the last

Sunday of the season, and Christmas is just a matter of hours away. But Advent did its thing, and now's the time for it to fade away.

And that's the way a lot of things work, don't they? We look forward to them, and then they finally come . . . and then they

are over. But then you will notice there are some things that we wait expectantly for, they arrive . . . and then they stay. And

sometimes the "staying" is harder to deal with than the regret of having them fade away until the next time around. For example,

couples look forward to their wedding day, it comes . . . and then they have to live that marriage from thence onward. A seminarian

looks forward to ordination day, it comes, he becomes a priest . . . and then he has to live that priesthood from thence onward.

Parents so look forward to the new baby, the birth-day arrives . . . and then they are responsible from thence onward for that life. Oh,

it's all good, and we would never not have those things for the uninterrupted responsibilities they will now bring, but as much as

sadden ourselves over the fading of good things that do go away (like Advent and Christmas each year), it can also be (not sad) but

challenging when other things never fade away.

So what can we do? Nothing. This is all the Lord God's plan, and He know what's best. The things that fade, no matter how

much we like them, must be better for us that they do fade, and we have a chance to look forward to them once again in the future.

And the things that don't fade, no matter how challenging, must be better for us that they are never gone from our lives, no matter how

trying that might be sometimes.

One interesting "hybrid" of all this: our faith. It's meant to be a permanent thing that never fades once it is received, but

that's up to us. It can fade if we let it. Let's just not let it. If we keep up on it, it will stick with us to the end.

* * *

Our Advent Giving Tree was once again a source of great almsgiving in our parish family. You may not always notice the

blurbs we put in the bulletin about our almsgiving projects in the parish, and that's okay – we're not doing these things to congratulate

ourselves. But I thought this time I would highlight this year's Advent Giving Tree project so that you might better realize what this

brings about. And – perhaps if you haven't taken part in this in the past you may want to jump on that bandwagon in the future.

This year our parish family returned 800 of the tags. They brought in over 900 gifts, and 191 gift cards totally $5,100 – and

65 packages of diapers! The recipients of these gifts were St. Gianna's Maternity Home, our sister parish at St. Michael's Indian

Mission, Churches United for the Homeless, Women's Care Center, the Dorothy Day House, and our own parish outreach program to

those in need for the year to come.

Thank you to all who took part! Our parish has a lot of resources at its disposal, and I am so happy we are actually sharing

our God-given gifts with others who need them.

Now in just a few days we will celebrate our Father's biggest gift to us – the gift of His Son among us as a man – or should I

say a little baby? In any event, our God is the First Giver, and we imitate Him as best we can with our giving, too.

Stewardship Moment: 4th Sunday of Advent

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.” MATTHEW 1:24 Putting our complete trust in the Lord without expecting anything in return. Striving to put God first in all things and follow Him wherever He may lead us. As we prepare for the birth of our Lord, pray for the strength and courage to be a model of discipleship, just as Joseph was.

A healing-prayer team has been organized at Sts. Anne & Joachim Church for the purpose of praying with individuals for healing. People will be available for healing prayer on Tuesday, January 7, from 7–8:30 p.m. in the church. Individuals who desire healing prayer can meet in a quiet setting with two members of the team. The prayer time is confidential. Email questions to [email protected].
