Welcome to the Regent’s University London Student Activities and Events Guide 2015-16. Studying in London means that you have a fantastic array of opportunities on your doorstep and beyond, offering a rich extension to your studies.

This companion will bring these opportunities to life and help you plan what we hope is a truly a memorable academic year for you. You will find here a range of sports and fitness activities, day and weekend trips, and things to do in London during the academic year. The range of activities is assembled with feedback from existing and past students, so we believe this is the go-to guide to find out what’s going on at Regent’s this year.

The guide is split into three sections: events and activities, sport and fitness and Student Union activities and events. Within each are details of complementary and paid activities exclusive to Regent’s students. With so many fun, enriching and inspiring prospects listed in the following pages, you will not be stuck for something to do in your spare time.

It’s also worth noting that exact times listed within this guide may be subject to change, so please check before booking. Some of the trips and activities in this guide must be booked in advance, so please visit the Regent’s online store, where you’ll receive a booking itinerary by e-mail that gives you the full schedule for the day of the activity you have chosen. store.regents.ac.uk

Student involvement at Regent’s

Regent’s University London exists for students to flourish both academically and socially, and develop the range of skills that will support a successful career. In partnership with the Student Union, the University is committed to exceeding students’ expectations and quality standards. In order to do this Regent’s involves student representatives as members of the important decision-making committees of the University, encouraging them to be actively involved with the inner workings of Regent’s and help to make the key decisions that affect the University and its students.

Why become a student representative?

Becoming a student representative shows others around you that you take the student experience seriously. By becoming a student rep, you learn vital employability skills, such as communication, team-working and project-planning skills. You will be able to use your negotiation and problem-solving skills to influence the decisions made at senior levels by liaising with academics and management and attending committee meetings. Becoming a student rep shows you care enough to take the time out of your studies and other commitments to ensure that your programme is of the highest quality and standards for your fellow students.

What is a student programme representative?

Student representatives act as the voice of Regent’s University London students. They are positioned to give feedback and constructive appraisal of programmes, as well as ideas and suggestions to improve the student experience in Faculties and across the University. Student representatives are elected to present the views of students and act as a conduit between students and the University’s leadership.

How do I become a student representative?

In the days after induction and when your programme begins, a staff member from your Faculty will conduct an election in your cohort. To stand for this election, all you need to do is make the staff member who is running your election aware of your interest. You may be asked to give a short, informal speech to your fellow students, who may also want to ask you why you feel that you should represent them. An election vote will then be conducted within the confines of the cohort. Once the result is announced, and if you have been elected, you will be required to attend a training conference shortly after to prepare you for your role. This will be followed by an invitation to join your programme’s staff and student meeting and your School’s student council.

If you have any enquiries please call into Acland Lounge 1 (AL1), or contact Mark Gillespie, Student Engagement Manager on +44 (0)20 3075 6272 or [email protected]
