John Flobbins did not have an easy task of providing an overview on the state of the arts industry for the differentdisciplines represented by the students in our class. I think he took this factor into account and succeeded. John

is very approachable, organized, receptive to questions, took an active interest in the students, and effectivelyaddressed key considerations all artists face when trying to advance their careers. I also appreciated hiswillingness to discuss personal anecdotes as well as bring in an outside expert for our lecture on public policy

as it relates to the arts.

I think John did a great job at conveying the usefulness of the material we covered in class. This courseconslstently reiterated the idea that success in the arts largely stems from preparation, maintenance, and

relationships. John did an effective job at breaking down and demystifying these elements, while giving usadditional information to explore after class.

The only thing I would recommend is offering more topic direction for the discussions that occurred when ourclass broke off into small groups. For this, lcan only speak of instances in my group. With some adjustments, I

believe these small group talks could become a more vital element of the course.

I found the lectures on contracts, taxes, and copyright law to be the most useful. I atso liked having the flexibilityto choose my two texts for the quarter. This allowed me to really direct my learning toward"my field and needs.

ln addition, John offered his support and advice when I approached him about endorsing my application for thecollege's Foundation Activity Grant. I recently received the good news on this application. I very much appreciateJohn's encouragement, and look forward to communicating with him next quarter. This kind of extracurricularsupport is not a given with all instructors, and is a testament to John's dedication to seeing his students findsuccess in their fietds.

After taking this class lam amazed that the School of VisualArts (SVA) in Manhattan charges as much as it

does. Being a professionalartist requires so much knowledge about business, law and networking, ldon'tunderstand how any school teaching the arts gets away with omitting this course. I am extremely thanHul that

John Robbins teaches this class. My only criticism is that I wish the class came in a larger size. The knowledge

provided is necessaryto any one who wants to work in the artisticfield. John covered everybody's needs whether

ihey *er" performance, visual or musical. He gave us both resources and contacts that would enable students

to continue the work after the class had finished'

John Robbins is wonderful to learn from. His performing background lends itself to his teaching as he keeps

everyone engaged during his lectures and stirs up discussion. I found the overhead proiection of the main points

in the lecture to be extremely helpful as well as the hand outs. Much of the information he provided turned out

to be essential tools that I will be using for the rest of my career in the arts.

Thishas been my first quarter at Evergreen State College, and this class exceededall of my expectations' First

a lew words about the class, and how it impactedme. .ltnn nonUlns was a fantastic instructor. Each week he

gave lectures thatwere captivating, and had me jotting notes as fast as I could. He reallyunderstood how business

impacts artists, and I really trusted that he knew whaihe was talking about, as he is in the arts as well' Musicians

are infamous tornot being business minded, and this included me. Before the class, I wasoverwhelmed about

just how littie I knew abolt turning my band into a business. For example, for the last 6 months my band has

been playing shows without aconiract. we never got paid what we were initially told, the venue didn't havethe

right equiprient, and we never knew in what ordei we would perform. TheArtist as a Business taught me the

iriportance of having a contract with eachvenue we play at. Since learning about contracts and having each

booking agentsign one, we have been paid more, and gotten much better promotional help fromthe venue'

lvetruly implemented a ton o{ information from this class. There are still sometopics that I don't fully understand,

sucfr ai taxes, and grants, but I now amactually interested in learning all I can about them.

Itook this class home with me each week. This class was held on a Tuesdayevening, and my band practices on

Wednesdays. Each member of my band wasexcited that I was taking this class, and I regularly relayed to them

theinformation I learned in the leciures and books. My final assignment was a S'yearaction plan, in which I was

to chart out goals and how to reach them. My bandwasthrilled about this assignment, and gave me input about

how to weave all ofour goals together in into the S-year plan. We've printed it out, and use it asmotivation to get

each goal accomplisheo in tt',* imount of time laid out in the S-yearptan. I also was thrilled to network with like-

minded musicians who weretaking this class. My band actually got together with classmate Scoti Taylor'sband,

The Hard Way, and played a concefi together in Seattle

The most valuable thing I learned from this class is that to succeed in thearts, you have to think o{ yourself as

a proiessional, rather thin .iust ahobbyist. I suspect a large pafi of me previously leeting like a hobbyist wasdue

to my tack of business knowledge. Now I feel empowered, knowledgeable, andnot at all intimidated by the

business of music. I have a new sense ofconfidence, and the tools that will keep me from being taken advantage

of inthis industrY.

Through his experience as a long-time pedormance artist, author and faculty member who brings local and

touring artists to campus, John has extensive knowledge about art as a profession. John gave thoughtful lectures

on the state of aft-related industries, changing technology, compensation for arlists, methods of promotion,

intellectual property, funding sources, and contracts. He also provided us with many resources for fuftherresearch and and brought in a wonderful guest speaker from the Washington State Arts Commission whoinformed us about many local opportunities for funding and further inquiry. I'm thankful for my opportunity to

work with John this quarter and will recommend him to future students who are interested in strategizing and

John did an excellent job tying real-life examples of business models for both non-profit and for-profit

organizations. His knowledge in the field of business, afi and theater is abundantly clear. I enjoyed his lectures

immensely. John has a greit facilitation, presentation and teaching style. lt made learning feel more like an

event than a lecture or seminar. Jon's fantastic teaching style enabled peer-to-peer critique which allowed new

and innovative perspectives on student work.

John added a unique and memorable learning experience to our class meetings by establishing a -networking

breakfast,. This designated networking time allowed for students to meet each other, discuss their class projects,

common interests and potential contacts. Allowing this time was extremely beneficial and a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed taking the class "Art as a Business" with John Robbins. He explained everything that I' and the

other students needed to know, as new artists going out into the business world-

There was never any wasted space in any of his lectures, and he was very empathic and helpful. I feel that his

class will benefit me in many areas of business in my future art and writing endeavors'

John is extremely knowledgeable and well spoken, he is easy to understand and provides an excellently

structured class. His presentations and guests are interesting and informative.

I also appreciated that the notes, presentations, and resour@s were not only provided to all of his students

verbally and visually, but that they were offered in hard-copy at the end of eactr session. Additionally they were

available through e.mail upon request. lt would be next to impossible to miss anything he taught, no matter what

your situation.

I look forward to attending future classes taught by John Robbins; he is a top rate professor-

Professor John S. Robbins made Summer Quar"ter an interesting, challenging, and

enlightening experience for me. He possesses excellent serninar facilitation skills and his lectures

were informative and thought provoking.

His explanation of complex event production processes and problem solving were clear

and easy to comprehend. I was able to apply his teachings in practice when I participated in the

writing of a grant application for my new theatre company.

I appreciated his lectures on strategic planning, organizati.onal strucfure, and management

in arts-based projects. Additionally, Mr. Robbins delivered very well prepared lectures and

presented an av/esome line-up of speakers who enunciated the topic of each lecture.

I am very impressed that, in this course, I learned so many practicalapplications that

directly impact my work as ail artist and as an arts maoager. I found this course and professor

Robbins to be a highlight of my time in the MPA Program at TESC. I would welcome another
