Exhibition StatementJoy is defined as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. The use of color and subject/location seem to have a large impact upon whether or not a piece is considered joyful. For example, a painting of the sun in comparison to a dungeon or cave could be considered joyful.
Bright colors in particular have an influence on the emotions a painting might give off, such as bright blue, yellow, red, or green hues. The use of positive emotions and specific types of action take part in defining joy within a work as well – outstretched arms, smiles, embraces, and jumping are examples of this.
Many of these traits can be found in the following works of art, which collectively utilize location, color, facial expression, and action to express a feeling of joy.
