Please follow the following l ink to access the Profile for your
placement area:
https://www.iow.nhs.uk/Working-With-Us/learning-zone/practice-
placement-profiles_2.htm
Placement Visit Opportunities – f ind out about potential
learning opportunities that may be available to you whilst on
placement. For example if you have a placement in theatres,
you may want to spend time with a special ist nurse i.e. Acute
Pain Nurse, Tissue Viabil ity Nurse etc.
https://www.iow.nhs.uk/Working-With-Us/learning-
zone/placement-visit-opportunities.htm
Ensure that you know what you are expected to wear. You
must also wear your identif ication badge at all times, and
adhere to the Trust’s uniform policy. This includes removing
facial piercings, when you are in the placement setting.
Find out about parking or transport l inks for your placement

you contact the following people:
- Your placement area – make note of the shift co-ordinator’s name

- The Clinical Education Team, work alongside the various universities
and will have a Learning Environment Facilitator attached to each
specific area. This is to ensure that you feel supported by the Trust.
The Learning Environment Facilitators act as a bridge between the
universities, yourself and the Trust. We are always happy to help you
and you will be able to contact us on the following email:
[email protected] or ext. 5410 or 5354
Working hours on placement. Make sure you find out your
rota/shift patterns in advance – this wil l vary between Clinical
areas and you wil l be expected to work the normal shift
pattern of the area.
Students are reminded that best practice and the working time
directive states that you should not work more than 48 hours per
week on average, in both your placement and a job if you have
one. In addition you should have at least 11 hours rest in any 24
hour period. Remember that as a health professional you have a
duty of care for patients and that working more than 48 hours per
week may impact negatively on patient care and as such you
may be subject to a f itness to practice investigation.

Accountability and Delegation
Students have a duty of care and therefore a legal l iabil ity , you
must:
Ensure that you perform competently.
Inform a member of staff when you are unable to perform
competently.
In order for anyone to be accountable they must:
Have the abil ity to perform the task
Accept the responsibil ity for doing the task
Have the authority to perform the task within their job
description, and the policies and protocols of the
organisation.
If a registered practitioner has delegated a task they must ensure
that the task has been appropriately delegated.
This means that:
The task is necessary and delegation is in the patient’s best
interest
The student understands the task and how it is to be performed
The student has the skil ls and abil it ies to perform the task
competently
The student accepts the responsibil ity to perform the task
competently.
Remember your NMC Code of Conduct & HCPC Standards of
Conduct!

Managing issues in practice
It can be a stressful time for you when you are l iving and working in
an unfamiliar place. We want to ensure that you have a wonderful
placement and are well supported throughout.
We believe that it is important for any issues or concerns to be dealt
with as quickly as possible. Each University has ‘Managing Issues in
Practice’ guidelines, but we have summarized below the process
you should follow:
Take your individual concerns directly to your Pract ice
Assessor/Supervisor/Educator and/or the Learning
Environment Facil itator/Clinical Education Team/ Ward
Manager.
You may also want to consider contacting your
Academic Assessor/Practice Liaison Lead from the
University.
Refer to the Trust’s ‘raising concerns policy’ which you
can access via the Intranet see l ink below:
http://intranet.iow.nhs.uk/Home/Corporate-Support/Human-
Resources-Development/Raising-Concerns-Whistle-Blowing
In the Trust we use the Datix system for reporting incidents in
practice. You may need support with fil l ing in the form, from either
your Practice Assessor/Supervisor or the Clinical Education Team.
You will find the Datix form on the intranet homepage, or click on

Learning Resources
You are welcome to use the Oliveira Library whilst on placement, alongside
your University resources.
We are located in the centre of the Education Centre and staffed 9-5
Monday to Friday. Out of hours you can access the library using the security
door code, available on request.
Please complete the registration form to join, and show us your blue SWIMS
card if you already have one – these can be used at all NHS libraries in the
South and West of England.
How do I find things in the library?
For books, search the library catalogue, and self-renew at:
www.swims.nhs.uk – you will need to restrict to ‘Isle of Wight’ (I01) as
you are only eligible to borrow books from our own stock.
Journal literature, a few e-books (including the Royal Marsden Manual
of Clinical Nursing Procedures) and point-of-care resources are
available online – you will need to register for an OpenAthens login to
access these.
Although we do not have access to University resources we are happy
to help guide you through them if you need help.
Can I use the computers?
Wi-Fi is available free throughout the hospital site – look for NHS WIFI on
your phone/laptop. If this does not work well you can register for Guest
Wi-Fi in the library.
Trust networked computers can be used during staffed hours, or 24/7 if
you have a Trust login
Printing is available from the computers at 5p per side.
A self-service photocopier is available in the front of the library, also
charged at 5p per side of A4.
Please observe current NHS Copyright Law when photocopying or printing
(see the poster by the photocopier/printer).
See various leaflets in the library, or our website at www.iow.nhs.uk/library for

Familiarise yourself with popular websites including the RCN, Nursing Times,
NMC, HCPC etc.
The following link was created by a student nurse who has been in your shoes
and has created a website to support student nurses in practice. He states:
‘It is a long tough bumpy road filled with blood sweat and tears. Look after
your physical and mental health. Be kind and keep plodding onwards. Love
to you all x’ (Student Nurse 2018).

Socialising
We know for some students it can be a daunting and somewhat
lonely time being on placement in a new area, so advise the
following:
To create a social media group e.g. Messenger/WhatsApp to
keep in touch with other students on placement, the groups
must adhere to

nications%20Policy%20.pdf
Get out and meet others – there can be lots to do, so go out
and explore when you can . Visit the following site for the Isle of
