WHAT’S THE POINT?
The main idea is to give students ownership and become active participants in learning.
Students should assume responsibility for their own learning process.
Focus on the 3 R’s
Relevance: Why are we doing this?
Responsibility: Ownership for learning
Reporting: To parents and others (speaking in public)

PREPARATION
Since this is something new to the students, we (the teacher), must prepare and provide them with the appropriate conference structure.
Instruct students how to lead the conference
Assist them with collecting and preparing information to be shared with parents
Describe how to explain and interpret any information to be shared
Allow time to collect pieces of work to showcase (both strengths and areas of improvement)
Allow time to practice (this will allow students to gain confidence!)

PREPARATION CONT’D
A letter will be mailed out to parents letting them know of the conference change, and that their child will be the ones leading the discussion and the teacher will serve as the facilitator.

Grades should not be the only topic discussed during the conference. Students should prepare some type of portfolio, and be able to discuss its contents and explain why they chose the artifacts within the portfolio.
