Xavier High School Student Life 7

Have you ever wondered why just about every room and field at Xavier is names after someone

or something? Almost every day, students at Xavier utilize rooms and sports fields that are

named after people that have contributed time, talent, or treasure to Xavier. Below are just a few

of these and how they got their names.

Tom and Diana Stortz donated funds to Xavier and dedicated the

Baseball field to Diana’s father, Ken Charipar, who passed away about a year ago. Ken was a respected

baseball player and coach for most of his life. The Softball field was named after Bob Erusha as a result of Erusha and his

wife making a generous donation to the school. Bob passed away a few years

ago and there is a memorial held every year for Ken and Bob.

Fun Fact:“The Chapel is the heart of the school, it provides a quiet place for reflection and a place to celebrate mass.”-Mrs. Esker

Fun Fact: Bob Erusha helped put the sod down on the new fields and attended nearly every home softball game.

The gymnasium was named in memory of Ron Thillen, a long time

supporter of Xavier High School. Ron Thillen was born in Waterloo in 1926. He loved

sports and had a lot of friends that cared for him very much. Donating to Catholic

and charitable causes was very important to Ron

and to his parents, and he made a large

donation to the

school.

The Chapel was dedicated by the Seifert family to Monsignor Sodawasser, a priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque who served as a pastor

at St. Matthew’s parish. The Chapel features beautiful stained glass windows, along with many items from both Regis and LaSalle’s chapels. It is always open and anyone is welcome to come for prayer.

The theatre was named after Regis and LaSalle in order to give these schools

recognition and as a way to bring tradition of both schools to Xavier. Xavier

did a campaign called “Take a Seat” and asked Regis and LaSalle Alumni to

purchase a seat in the theatre in order to get Regis and

LaSalle alumni involved in the

dedication and creation of Xavier High

School.

The soccer field is named after the Highway Equipment Company which is owned by Rocki and Bill

Shepard. The Shepards have had four daughters that have attended Xavier, all of whom have played soccer for

the Saints. Rocki is the assistant coach for the Saints and helped

plan the layout of the field and how it should look.

Fun Fact: “The walls in the theatre are painted red and green in order to represent Regis and La Salle.”-Mr. Cervantes
