Join the VCHS Pink Vail Team - March 25th - Vail at Golden Peak

Our TEAM FUNDRAISING GOAL IS $5,000

Pink Vail is the world's biggest ski day to conquer cancer. Proceeds benefit all patients at Shaw Re-gional Cancer Center through improvements to patient care and by funding the Spirit of Survival program, providing all patients the opportunity to receive free exercise training, nutrition coaching, emotional support, massages, acupuncture, out-door adventures and much more. These unique services can dramatically impact a patient’s quali-ty of life, but are not typically covered by insur-ance.

Even though Vail Christian High School does not have their own hockey team, our students are still able to represent Vail Christian High School and display excellent teamwork and quality sportsmanship while playing with other hock-ey teams. We are so lucky to have two Vail Christian students playing with the Battle Mountain Husky High School team, Freshman Joey Beveridge and Senior Max Clark. Joey Beveridge plays offensively, as a forward, for the team, and Max Clark plays defensively as one of Battle Mountain’s goaltenders. Besides the Battle Mountain hockey team, sophomore Caitlin Bishop plays competitively with a girl’s club hockey team called the Vail Mountaineers. This club team is in the u19 division, which means that girls up to 19 years of age are able to be on the roster and participate in the game. This year, the Vail Mountaineers are ranked in the top three in their league, starting out most of the season undefeated, but ultimately losing two rigorously played games last week. Their season is not over yet, however, with the state championship tournament taking place for them at the end of February and a few more league games still in the future. The Battle Mountain Huskies are also pretty high up there in the standings too, ranking third in their High School league. Their most recent and last home game took place in Eagle on Saturday night, and resulted in a win of 8-1 on the Husky’s part against Columbine. This last home game also happened to be senior night for the Huskies, and six seniors were recognized from the team. It has been a great season for both teams so far, and with a couple of more games to come the lively spirit of hockey will continue on!

The Academic Decathlon State Competition will be held on Saturday, March 4th in Denver. Please encourage the following students who have been studying all aspects of WWII as well as preparing and memorizing speeches: Sophia Branden, Alex Bull-ock, Isabelle Carlson, Hope Dease, Maggie Herron, Rob Hixon, Brookelyn Kraft, Jake Nowicki, Quinn Strauch, Caitlin Bishop, Camille Chicoine, Alexis Ehrlich, Jasmine Hartman-Budnick, Hannah Heckman, Griffin McGuckin, Tommy O'Neil, Tanner Pierce Durance. Go Saints!

Travel Club Update:

A big Thank You to all who support our Food Fundraising on Wednesdays and Fridays. On May 30th, 19 of us will be traveling to Austria, Hungary, Czech Re-public, Poland and Germany for 12 days of touring and fun! The trip(s) for the Summer of 2018 will be announced at the beginning of March with an information-al meeting for parents and students.

So far, the basketball season for the boys and the girls has gone very well. The girls are 6th in the 2A league, with a record of 10-10 overall this season. The Lady Saints have won against, Basalt, Aspen, North Park, West Grand, Hayden, Plateau Valley, De Beque, and Cap Rock. The team has had a couple close games against West Grand on January 7th, Cedaredge on February 10th, and Meeker on January 21st. West Grand, as one of the

team's rivals, made for an extremely exciting game. The girls team came out with winning on their minds after having been defeated by The Mustangs earlier in the season. The game was exciting all the way to end when the energy moved to Vail Chris-tian's favor. Unfortunately, the Lady Saints didn’t end up with win in the other close games against Meeker and Cedaredge. The rivalry game against So-roco was on January 20th, and, sadly, though girls didn't end up with a win, they fought hard the whole game . We asked Junior and Captain Jessie Raitt about the season and she told us, “ This year has been so special as we have grown together as teammates and fami-ly. Our two seniors were such great leaders and will be missed, but we are just wanting to enjoy the ending part of the season and accomplish all of our goals". The Lady Saints end-ed with a win against Hotchkiss on Senior Night with a score of 60-39. Unfortunately, the girl’s lost in the playoff game against Rangely on Wednesday, February 22 which ended a season filled with fun and competition!

Boys basketball has had a great season, even with the loss of two seniors who had a ma-jor impact on the basketball program. They are ranked 5th in the 2A league with a record of 8-12 overall with wins against North Park, Vail Mountain, Hayden, Plateau Valley, Soroco, De Beque, Rangely, and Caprock. Some of the team’s biggest achievements this season include beating rivals Soroco and having Sebastian Moritz beat the school record for most shots made in a game when he scored 45 points against Rangely. Even though this a personal step forward for him in his Junior year, teamwork helped make this happen, with amazing assists from Bryan Trujillo, Zach Makeever, and many other teammates. Sadly the boys lost their last home game against Hotchkiss along with their playoff game on February 22nd. Overall, though, the season was marked with milestones and teamwork!

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE: By: Jordan Puntel & Sally McDonnell - Yearbook Staff

Clara Cappel and Sally McDonnell participate in high school swimming as their winter sport. Since Vail Christian does not have a team, they swim for Glenwood Springs High School. For their practices, they have to travel about 45 minutes in each direction, and they

do this about 3 or 4 times a week. Their team has been very successful over the course of this winter season, winning every normal-season meet by more than 50 points. The team had grown a lot in the past few years, and now has 44 girls participating. The Regional meet was two weeks ago, and there, the team won by more than 100 points. This is the sec-ond year in a row that they have won that meet. When participating in the state competition, Glenwood came in 3rd overall. Clara has swum on that team for her junior and senior year in high school, and this is Sally’s first year on the team. Both girls have been very successful. They both competed and placed top 15 in the Regional meet, and this year Sally qualified to be on the state team for a relay. The season officially ended on February 15, 2017.

“Having a strong bond with my class and teachers that became a home away from home.”

“Small class sizes and incredible teachers made Vail Christian really special. I transferred in for support and

community and was overwhelmed by what I found.”

“The community that VCHS has built - not only was I close to students from all grades, but I was close to

certain faculty and staff as well. Vail Christian had a unique atmosphere that I don’t think can ever be fully

recreated somewhere else.”

“VCHS had a supportive culture that cultivated each individual while also keeping a focus on Jesus.”

"My love for writing and passion for rhetoric was celebrated in English class, and my interest in environmental studies was re-ignited through Environmental Science while at Vail Christian. I found my interdisciplinary inter-est and focus while at college, yet this basis in these two subjects has definitely informed my interest in being a professor of environmental philosophy and/or politics. Also, the familial feel of the teachers at Vail Christian has shown me the potential fulfillment of guiding students, helping me to realize the kind of educator that I would want to be."

"Teachers that taught the critical disciplines for engineering, (science and math) had a profound impact on me,

and solidified my decision." "Vail Christian helped form who I am today. It showed me what I am passionate about and how I can form that

into a possible career."

"The benefits of a small school such as: attention, accountability, community, and extra guidance." "I would never want to see changed the array of exceptional staff members, including both teachers and faculty.

They are what made Vail Christian such an incredible school for me." "The size of the school, the sports, and the faculty to student relationships." "The Christian focus, and the strength of the college advising program ."

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE: By: Blake Layman - Yearbook Staff

The Dance team has continued to flourish throughout the years as it gains more and more talent each year with many students joining, such as in-coming freshmen. This year our Vail Christian Dance team took home the state title, once again, in the 2A Division making them six-time state champions. As Mr. O’Neil said, “Our dance team is a dynasty” This term, “dynasty”, was also used in the Vail Daily, when an article was written to congratulate the team on their accomplishments. With excite-ment and enthusiasm, the team was able to show the school their dance during one of our chapel Wednesdays and during a basketball game at halftime. This year, some of our students involved with dance team were hurt during states, including Camille Chicoine who was unable to dance in the competition due to her recent hip surgery. “It was a disappointment not being able to compete as well as a hard time for me to watch every-one practice and compete in States, but I was glad I was able to support my team by praying and cheering with and for them, even if I wasn’t on the dance floor.” Camille said. Dance team has been at every home game cheering on our teams and leading the student sections to cheer. As dance team slowly comes to an end with the basketball season, we thank them for their endless support!
