To avoid disappointment and to assist with Staffplanning, all Prep 2020 enrolment forms need to be received by the due date. Prep Transition- Story telling, Music and ArtLast Monday 6th May, I had the pleasure of providing storytelling, music and art for some of our 2020 Prep children and some of theiryounger siblings. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the future students of St Michael’s and their parents. The next session will beWednesday 15 th May at 9:30am. Morning tea will be provided after the session in the staffroom. I hope to see you there. School Enhancement MorningI extend my appreciation to the families who have nominated the 18th of May Enhancement Session. We need a strong turn out to cleanall areas in preparation for the St Michael’s Parish day. Thank you for generously giving your time. Winter UniformPlease ensure all students are in Winter uniform by the end of May unless otherwise discussed with me. As members of St Michael’sstudent take pride in wearing their uniform correctly and neatly. Thank you to Mel W and Belinda O for their continued hard work andorganisation of the uniform shop. We are truly grateful. NAPLAN TestingNext Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16 th May is NAPLAN (National Assessment Plan for Literacy and Numeracy). Weapproach these assessments like any other assessments provided throughout the year. Please encourage your child to be punctual andconfident in their own ability and strengths. These assessments provide us with valuable information about your child’s ability to applyknowledge in Literacy and Mathematics. Please contact Jo Mannix, your child’s classroom teacher or me if you are requesting awithdrawal, exemption or disability adjustment. Further information has been sent out this week. School MaintenanceOver the school holidays St Michael’s administration building was repainted. The paintwork has freshened up our beautiful 1933 buildingwhich was long overdue for restoration. The remainder of the school will be repainted overtime as part of a painting maintenance program. The ramp area outside the Office and tiles near the Wellbeing Room were also resurfaced. Both areas were an OH & S issue as they hadbecome extremely slippery especially when any rainfall hit the surface. All heaters and air-conditioners were serviced in readiness forWinter and our dead silver birch tree was replaced with a healthy tree. All carpets and vinyls were steam cleaned and windows washed.

Learning and Teaching NewsThis term teachers are working with students to further improve student ownership of learning. Our focus is on enhancing opportunitiesfor student voice, choice and direction in learning, as well as providing learning opportunities that develop learner skills and dispositions. Knowledge, facts and figures are only part of the learning equation, learners must also acquire skills and dispositions in order to applyand transfer knowledge across all areas of the curriculum and fields of working. For example it is one thing to know the automaticresponses to times tables, however it is another to be able to transfer this learning to everyday problem solving and application. This isalso the case for reading comprehension knowledge, when exploring big concepts such as Freedom, Expression and Diversity, studentsneed to apply the comprehension skills and strategies learned during literacy times to critically reflection on new learning. This term our focus for learning is applying the skills, strategies and dispositions we learn in one curriculum area to other learning areas. Year 5/6 Camp MeetingOn Wednesday 29th May the Year 5/6 teachers will be having a Year 5/6 Camp Information Meeting for parents and caregivers. Theinformation meeting will begin at 5.15pm and will be held in the 5/6 rooms.

On May 19th we will hold our inaugural St Michael's Parish Day. Archbishop Peter Comensoli will celebrate Mass at 10:30. This will befollowed by a barbecue and sporting activities for the children. Please bring a plate. Come along to help us celebrate our wonderfulparish community!Did you know? Our school began in 1946, just after the end of World War Two. Class was held in part of the old church building. The school wassurrounded by paddocks. The first teacher was Miss Sheila Evans (Dalton). In 1947, the school was placed under the care of thePresentation Sisters. Ashburton grew rapidly as couples wanted to leave the war behind and start families in new homes in theAlamein Estate. A two story school building was constructed in 1948-9 and more classrooms were opened in 1959. The new buildingwas blessed and opened in 2017. In the 1960s, students were able to undertake secondary education at the school. This was phasedout in the early 1970s. The school has long been an integral and vibrant part of the our parish community. If you would like to see an aerial photograph of how the suburb has chanced since 1945, check out the followingfascinating link: https://1945.melbourne/

The Sustainability Team have exciting news to share! This term we will be implementing two different recycling bins to helpdo our part for the environment. The first bin will be from TerraCycle to help us recycle out dental items (it does not have to be Colgate branded) This includes: Tooth brushes Toothpaste tubes Floss containers Toothbrush packaging We suggest keeping a small bin at home to collect any dental items, then simply drop them off at school once you get the notification that the bin has arrived at the office! The second bin to be introduced will be for soft plastics. Before we have the bin for members of the school community todrop their soft plastics, it is important we all know what can and can't go in this bin. Here are a few examples of what CAN be recycled Here are a few examples of what CANNOT be recycled: Plastic bottles Plastic containers Any rigid plastic such as meat trays, biscuit trays or strawberry punnets Glass Rubber Paper and cardboard Tin cans Food waste Collect your soft plastics at home, bring them to school and drop them into our coloured wheelie bin that will be found nearthe office. One of our staff members will take all the soft plastic at the end of the week to a soft plastic recycling station. The wheelie bin will be brightly coloured and lots of signs! The school community will be notified when the bin is set up andready to take your soft plastics. Please join us to make small changes to save our planet! Leftovers Make Great Lunch Why reinvent the wheel every morning when you are packing lunch? Leftover food from dinner the night before not only saves time but also saves food waste! Roasted chicken from dinner can be turned into a chicken salad sandwich or wrap. Soups and pastas can be heated and sent in a food thermos.
