ACADEMIC STAFF

Learning is central to what we do and our teachers are passionate about teaching and learning The full credentials of all of the academic staff can be found on the school website Lifelong learners themselves our

teachers consistently reflect on and analyse their own practice seeking to constantly improve the quality of their teaching and consequently the learning experiences of the students To support this teaching staff regularly attend training courses organised by senior and middle leaders other teachers and by external agencies As well as teaching academic lessons our teachers also run or help students to run our extensive ECA and sports programme They also act as Mentors and deliver our PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) curriculum Many of the teachers also work within the Houses either as Houseparents or as Tutors There is a very strong sense of community at KTJ with teachers getting to know the students extremely well

ABSENCES

We expect students to attend all lessons and to fulfill all of their school commitments As missing school has a negative impact on learning we request that parents refer to the school calendar when booking all holidays and flights If day students are unwell and need to be absent parents should inform their Houseparent as soon as possible preferably the day before or in emergencies by 815 am on the day of absence For both day students and boarders request for one or two days leave of absence on compassionate or personal grounds or in exceptional circumstances should be made in writing to the Houseparent well in advance of the proposed absence If the proposed leave is longer parents should write to the Principal If for any reason a student has to miss lessons due to a pre-arranged absence they must let their teachers know in advance so that measures can be put in place for them to catch up with any missed work Students who are unwell when at school must report to the Health Centre They must obtain a medical note from the Health Centre to show to the relevant member of staff if they are unfit to do sports or other activities All absences are recorded on our iSAMS the school management system

AIR-CONDITIONING

In order to create a more comfortable and conducive environment for learning teaching and living air conditioning has been installed in every classroom and in the Houses In the Houses it is operational when required in several shared areas and from 7pm to 7am in the student bedrooms The Auditorium Arc and Tuanku Najihah Hall are also equipped with air-conditioning units KTJ is an eco-friendly school that champions sustainability so the use of air conditioning is regulated

AIRPORTS

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the main airport of Malaysia It has two terminals KLIA 1 and KLIA 2 It is located 45 minutes away from KTJ KLIA 2 normally receives passengers travelling with low cost airlines such as AirAsia and Tiger Airways whilst KLIA 1 handles other operators The school can organise for students to be taken to the airport and to be supervised checking in if necessary (fees may apply)

Getting to KTJ At KLIA 1 or KLIA 2 there are airport taxis limousines and minivans available for hire Look for the Taxi and Limousine Counters just after customs prior to exiting the arrivals gates Fixed fares according to destination zones are to be paid at the counters Please be aware of touts approaching unwary visitors offering their services as you exit the arrival lounges They operate illegal taxis and often over-charge safety levels for such touts are also a concern On arrival at the airport it is recommended that students take an official metered taxi to the school - Kolej Tuanku Jarsquoafar Mantin is the address to give at one of the official taxi booths Getting to KLIA or KLIA2 from KTJ

The school has a pool of regular licensed taxi drivers who have all had police checks and who service all of its

transport requirements Trips to the airport (and elsewhere) by taxi can be arranged through the Houseparent

The cost can either be paid directly to the driver or charged to parents via the end of term bill

ASSESSMENTS and EXAMINATIONS

Most of the assessment that takes place during the academic year is lsquoformative assessmentrsquo which can happen in many ways Teachers use this type of assessment to consistently check on what their students know understand and can do and then plan future lessons accordingly More formal assessments in the form of lsquotestsrsquo will also take place throughout the year at different times depending on the requirements of each subject Tests are carried out during lessons Formal examinations take place in an examination room which can be a classroom but is more often the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) or the foyer of the Auditorium Students in Forms 1 to 4 sit end-of-year examinations towards the end of Term 3 These examinations are set and marked by their teachers Students in Form 5 sit their final IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations during Term 3 These exams test the students on the content of the entire two-year IGCSE course begun in Form 4 Students who study IGCSE Additional Maths will sit their IGCSE Mathematics in Form 4 These examinations are set by external exam boards and the papers are marked externally The grades for IGCSE examinations are published in August As a preparation for these examinations Form 5 students sit a trial exam in each subject in January Students in the Sixth Form work towards AS (Advanced Subsidiary) levels in the Lower Sixth and their A2 exams in the Upper Sixth Together AS and A2 exams give an A-level qualification AS examinations take place in January May and June (for our August intake) and in November (for our January intake) A2 examinations take place in May and June As with IGCSEs the examinations are set and sent away to be marked by external examination boards and the results are published in August

ATM

There is an ATM on campus run by the Arab-Malaysian Bank (Ambank) All local and foreign cards are accepted The ATM is located at The Arc

CAFE DIEM

Cafe Diem is located in The Arc next to the school shop In the cafe you can buy hot and cold drinks as well as a selection of snacks Drinks can be paid for in cash or with a student card provided there is money in the studentrsquos account Opening hours are 10 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday and 1 pm to 6 pm on a lsquobrunch dayrsquo Hours will vary during exeats and public holidays Students may visit the cafe during break lunch and after school Sixth Form students can also visit the cafe during study periods No food is sold until 30 minutes after the start of lunch

CARS ON SITE

In order to make the school site as safe as possible for pedestrians there are barriers that limit car entry on site

These barriers are all open at the beginning and end of term and for exeats and holidays but at other times a

card is needed in order to open them

Day students should be dropped off by parents in the designated drop off points in front of the admin blocks in

both the Primary and Secondary Schools Should a student from the Secondary School have a lot of belongings

with them on a particular day it is possible for the barrier to be opened to allow the student to be dropped off at

their House In these situations please see the guard at the foyer of the Secondary School

Parents with children in both the Primary and Secondary Schools are able to get a barrier pass from the

Registrars Office in the Secondary School that will allow them to use the internal access road between the two

schools

COMMUNICATION

Students may contact staff using school provided email addresses on Google apps House Staff also carry a duty phone when on duty and can be contacted using that phone or by Google Hangout To communicate with other staff including their teachers students must use only school provided email addresses or Google Hangouts For academic matters parents or students can contact the Head of Secondary (Academic) directly Issues concerning the Sixth Form come under the ambit of the Director of Sixth Form

There are a number of sources of information for parents Besides the school website the Principal writes to parents weekly in his Principalrsquos updates sent by email Houseparents also update a ldquoWhatrsquos Onrdquo document via Google Docs for their Houses which is updated fortnightly Parent-Teacher meetings are also an avenue that is available for parents to meet with teachers to discuss their sonrsquos or daughterrsquos progress For all of our students it is important for parents to feel they can contact the school at any time It is perfectly acceptable to telephone the Principal with any questions or concerns However it may be appropriate to telephone another member of staff The first port of call will normally be the Houseparent

COMPLAINTS

We hope that you will not feel the need to complain about the operation of the school and that any difficulty can be sensitively and efficiently handled before it reaches that stage The Schools Complaints Procedures and Policy can be found on our website

COMPUTERS AND THE INTERNET

In this age of rapid digital technological advancement KTJ appreciates how powerful a tool a computer with internet access can be KTJ encourages the use of technology for the benefit of academic pursuits To this end all school buildings have wi-fi connectivity and we are working towards a lsquoBYODrsquo (bring your own device) programme Each student is provided with a username and password so that they can fully utilise our network As a responsible school student access to the internet is logged restricted and monitored to ensure that inappropriate sites are not accessed Students are advised to be mindful of their internet activity and the amount of time they spend online Game play and access to social media is restricted between 4-6 pm each day to encourage students to spend time off screen taking part in the many ECAs on offer or socialising with their friends lsquoin real lifersquo Students are welcome to use the devices that are located in common areas of the school Printers are also available The ICT department will provide students with details of how to access the school wi-fi when they arrive at school for the start of term

CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

KTJ does not allow any form of corporal punishment This prohibition includes the administration of corporal punishment to a student during any activity whether or not within the school premises and applies to all members of staff

Physical Restraint We hope that the use of any physical force will not become necessary However should this ever be required then the school policy on Physical Restraint must be followed The policy clarifies the power of teachers and other staff who have lawful control or charge of students in house or school to use reasonable force to prevent students committing any offence causing injury or damage to themselves or others or causing severe disruption

DAY STUDENTS

Day students are the responsibility of the Houseparent of the House they are attached to in the same way as all other students in the school A locker and desk will be allocated to each student in the House Day students follow exactly the same daily routine and programme as boarders during the school day and are subject to the same rules and expectations in terms of behaviour and conduct Once day students leave the school site they are the responsibility of their parents However they will remain subject to the schoolrsquos general principles which includes maintaining the good name of the school Daily Routine

1 Day students should arrive and depart from the school in normal school uniform 2 Upon arrival they should go to their House which should serve as their base during the school day They

should aim to arrive at school in time to appear in the House before their first lessons 3 If a day student is unable to attend school for any reason (or is going to be late) the school office or the

Houseparent should be informed by the parents in advance The information will then be registered on the school system so that teachers are notified

4 Day students cannot leave the site before 330 pm except on Saturdays when they can leave at 115pm 5 During the week day students can stay at school if they have commitments after 330 pm but should

leave the site before 615 pm unless permission to stay later has been obtained from their Houseparent Notes

A written request from parents is required if a day student for any reason wishes to stay overnight The Houseparent checks availability of bed space then if possible informs the Director of Boarding parents will then be charged accordingly

Day students are expected to attend all House meetings held during the day in the Houses they are not expected to attend House Meetings in the Senior Houses in the evenings although Houseparents will pass on pertinent information

From time to time they may be expected to attend House activities and events which require them to stay after 330 pm or return to the school in the evening or on a Sunday

Day students are expected to take part in ECAs and Wednesday House practices after school as part of their holistic education

Day students are expected to complete all academic assignments in the normal way It is not expected that any day student attends school on public holidays or over the weekend after 2pm

on Saturdays except when there are House events Any day student parent who wishes their son or daughter to do so must first seek the permission of their Houseparent to ensure that we know who is on campus

Parents are able to top up money on their childrsquos student card which will allow them to purchase items from Cafe Diem the school shop and the tuck shop Money can be topped up by cash at the accounts office or by using the e-purse that can be accessed at httpscalmsktjedumy The e-purse also allows parents to view their childrsquos transactions and monitor how much they are spending Setting yourself up as User 1 Please visit httpscalmsktjedumy to log in 2 Please enter your username (your email address without gmailyahoocom) 3 On your first login you will be required to change your password please click Change Password

END OF TERM REPORTS

Teachers write reports for all students at the ends of terms 1 and 2 and for Forms 1 to 4 and the Lower Sixth also at the end of term 3 Reports contain information about the progress made in each subject along with details of what the student needs to work on in order to make further progress Reports also contain a summary from the Houseparent about their achievements and contributions to the House sports drama music clubs societies and all of the many other activities that take place Students also write a self reflection that is included with their report Reports will also include grades that indicate the academic level of achievement in each subject Grade descriptors are published alongside reports to give an explanation of what the achievement of a certain grade means a student is able to do Reports are published through iSAMS which parents log in to using their own username and password Parents are strongly encouraged to read their son or daughterrsquos report with them and to discuss the comments as well as the grades These discussions are a great time to celebrate progress and discuss next steps

EXEAT STRUCTURE

The word lsquoExeatrsquo refers to weekend leave from school There is an Exeat weekend every three weeks or so throughout the year Students may return home or go to their guardianrsquos residence They may also with parental permission stay elsewhere such as with friends The school remains fully open so students may also stay here Lesson times for a Friday exeat are usually as follows Lesson 1 800 am ndash 830 am Lesson 2 830 am ndash 900 am Lesson 3 900 am ndash 930 am Lesson 4 930 am ndash 1000 am Lesson 5 1000 am ndash 1030 am Lesson 6 1030 am ndash 1100 am Break 1100 am ndash 1130 am Lesson 7 1130 am ndash 1200 noon Lesson 8 1200 noon ndash 1230 pm

Students who need to leave classes early must let the teacher concerned know in advance The Houseparent will also update the attendance management system to reflect this

Parents are allowed in from 1245 pm onwards Students who are in a position to do so are encouraged to go home for Exeats Those who live a long

distance away can with parental permission spend Exeats with friends Going away for part of the Exeat and then returning is not allowed Members of the Sixth Form who remain at the school can with their Houseparentrsquos approval and in

accordance with parental wishes take a day outing They must return to KTJ before 1100 pm or at 800pm if it is the last day of the Exeat

Those in Form 1 to 5 who remain at the school can only go out with parents relatives or a member of staff

If House trips have been organised all students of the House are expected to go Houseparentsrsquo may opt to exercise discretion for senior students However they cannot remain in the school unless supervision can be provided for them here

Roll-calls take place in Houses twice a day during Exeats After 1000 pm students in Form 5 and below must stay in their houses Members of the Sixth Form can go out but must be back in their own Houses by 1100 pm

Bedtimes during exeats are the same as they are on normal Saturdays On the last day of Exeat students are not expected to return before 300 pm unless prior notice and

approval has been given by their houseparent Exeats finish at 800 pm Roll-call on the last day of Exeat is at 900 pm and students are to remain in Houses after that

EXPEDITIONS

To provide students with opportunities to develop holistically improving their independence self-management leadership and teamwork in an environment beyond the classrooms and grounds of KTJ students in Forms 1 2 3 4 and the Lower 6th take part in annual year group expeditions For Forms 1 to 4 these usually take place in Term 1 and for the Upper Sixth at the end of Term 3 As the activities that the students take part in are often brand new experiences for example hiking climbing or kayaking the students can get very excited and nervous about these trips beforehand Universally after taking part the students agree that they were the highlight of the year and are very proud of what they have managed to achieve

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (ECAs)

KTJrsquos Mission is to provide a lsquoholistic educationrsquo meaning that we expect our students to extend their learning beyond the classroom There are a wide range of ECAs and sports on offer and students are encouraged to get fully involved in them Participation in ECAs and sports helps students to make friends develop new skills improve their time management to become part of a team to learn the importance of helping other people and to develop leadership skills amongst many other things All Form 1 to 2 students are expected to join at least two sports and one other ECA per week and they are welcome to take part in more as long as they are able to balance their work and other commitments Older students are expected to take part in at least two ECAs per week ECAs and sports are offered in two sessions per day on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday The first session runs from 400 pm to 455 pm and the second session from 500 to 600 pm Students sign up for ECAs at the start of each term using an online system A magazine giving details about all the activities on offer is published online prior to the sign up and students also attend an lsquoECA Fairrsquo during which they can ask questions to find out about what each activity involves As well as ECAs and sports there are many other opportunities for students to get involved in activities Wednesday afternoons (4pm onwards) are devoted to House activities during which preparation for the next House competition takes place At the start of each term there are House Nights (or House Days) when all the students of the House get together either in school or outside school and enjoy doing fun activities together Trips to the theatre lectures museums festivals tournaments (both in Malaysia and abroad) all take place throughout the year and students are encouraged to make the most from what is on offer

FACILITIES

KTJ boasts eighty acres of land for sports and recreation Our facilities include an outdoor swimming pool five fields (2 for football rugby hockey and cricket) four outdoor tennis courts two outdoor basketball courts and two netball courts There is also an air-conditioned indoor hall with a fully-equipped gym three squash courts

two basketball courts a climbing wall and six badminton courts The indoor hall can also be used for sports like indoor football and dodgeball KTJrsquos state-of-the-art Auditorium has seating capacity for 680 people This beautiful building is where the students and the school staff gather for important staged events and assemblies The Auditorium is equipped with a large display screen and the latest lighting and sound system technology A Music Studio a Drama Studio and a Dance Studio are also housed in this building The Arc which houses the school library contains thousands of books and resources Computers iPads and printing facilities are available here too KTJ also has a series of labs specifically for Biology Chemistry and Physics where experiments are performed the school provides all the necessary equipment needed for studying these disciplines The Waterfront building is dedicated to Music Art and Design Technology Each classroom provides students with a spacious working environment modern facilities and a fantastic view over our lake KTJ has four senior boysrsquo boarding houses (Nadzimuddin House Imran House Naquiyuddin House and Nadzaruddin House) three senior girlsrsquo boarding houses (Alia House Irinah House and Jawahir House) and three junior houses (Naquiah Boysrsquo House Naquiah Girlsrsquo House and Naquiah Day House) All houses have a library a pantry and a common room There is also a School Shop on campus where students can buy their uniform and other necessities for school Cafe Diem located at The Arc sells drinks ice creams and snacks There is also a newly refurbished tuck shop where students can buy additional food and drinks KTJ has its own fleet of drivers buses and minivans that are used to transport students on outings and trips To cater for the needs of our Muslim students and staff KTJ has a small surau (mosque) where prayers are performed daily Friday prayers are also performed every week Finally the Dining Hall is where all meals are served for the students and staff

FIRE PREVENTION AND FIRE DRILL

In a community like KTJ we recognise fire prevention as a priority We have taken various preventative steps to ensure a fire does not start at the school but should one occur we have appropriate response steps in place All buildings at KTJ are equipped with fire-fighting equipment There is also an emergency response team comprising of staff who have been trained to handle fire Many of the House staff have also been trained to use the water hoses and fire-extinguishers The fire-extinguishers are checked for their functionality and inspected by external professional companies Smoke detectors are also strategically placed including in each bedroom Fire escape route layout maps are posted in every building in the school School-wide and house-based fire drills are conducted at least once a term In the school-wide fire drill the whole school is involved and it takes place during school hours The local fire brigade regularly comes to inspect these fire drills and to make their recommendations House-based fire drills are conducted late at night after bedtime or very early in the morning These are overseen by the relevant Houseparent the Health and Safety Manager and the Director of Boarding

As responsible citizens of KTJ it is important that everyone ensures they understand the fire response procedures as well as the escape route layout from wherever they are Equally paramount is an individualrsquos responsibility to ensure that items that can cause a fire are not used such as candles incense and matches Heat-emitting electrical equipment is also a hazard that must be avoided Heat-emitting items that are prohibited for students to bring into school include kettles cooking equipment televisions and portable air-conditioning units

HEALTH CARE

Within the campus there is a Health Clinic which is open at all times (around the clock) to cater for all of our studentsrsquo medical needs It is staffed with full time nurses and a doctor who is there throughout the school day There are a number of clinics and private hospitals on KTJrsquos panel of medical care Our resident matrons also provide medical attention to students in their Houses In the interest of safety parents are advised to inform the Health Clinic if their children are taking any type of medication Similarly any existing illness or condition whether contagious or not should be communicated A full disclosure will allow us to respond appropriately to the medical needs of the student All prescription drugs must be handed over to the matrons who will supervise proper dispensation In the event of an outbreak of any kind of disease here or elsewhere the school will take all possible precautions to safeguard the wellbeing of those on campus This may include conducting health checks on all visitors employees and returning students as well as enforcing measures among others When there is a medical need Before school hours (700 am ndash 830 am) Boarders report to the House Matron Minor problems will be treated in situ severe cases will be referred to the Health Centre Day students who are unwell are expected to remain at home During school hours In the event of a student being unwell in class the following procedure should be adhered to

1 The student is given a medical note from the teacher excusing him her from the lesson and sent to the Health Clinic

2 The duty nurse will decide on the best course of action This may be to admit the student to the Health Clinic or send the student back to class

3 If a student is admitted to the Health Clinic the nurse on duty will enter the information onto the schoolsrsquo management system

4 In the case of an emergency the Houseparentsrsquo will be informed immediately and they or the matron will inform the parents In less urgent circumstances the Houseparentsrsquo will be informed by the Health Clinic duty nurse at the earliest opportunity who in turn decides on the best course of action

5 If a student does not feel well during break or at lunch time he she can report to their duty matron in the boarding house or go directly to the Health Clinic

4 Emergencies will be dealt by the Health Clinic duty nurse who can be called to the houses or sports field 5 In the event of an emergency where a student is in need of hospitalisation the duty nurse in the Health

Clinic will arrange for the appropriate transport The patient will be accompanied by the duty Matron the Houseparent or the House Matron

HOUSE BANK

The House Bank run by the Houseparent of each boarding house is a facility for students to deposit and withdraw money It provides a safe and easy way for students to ensure that they do not run out of money throughout the term All Houses have a House safe where money passports and other valuable items can be stored safely Parents may give Houseparents a certain amount of money to be added into their childrsquos House Bank or transfer an amount to the schoolrsquos account which can then be transferred into the House Bank The opening times of House Bank are determined and published by the respective Houseparents

LAUNDRY

There is a laundry service available every morning except on Sundays public holidays and Exeats The usual pick-up time for laundry is approximately 730 am Fresh laundry is returned by break time normally 48 hours later in the laundry room in each House Laundry books and specific house-coloured laundry bags will be provided by the House Matron Students should approach the House Matrons for details Although the charge of the laundry service for clothing is included in the boarding fees older boarders in senior Houses have the alternative option of using the washing machines available in each House to wash their own clothes Each House has an external contractor that deals with laundry All clothing should be clearly labelled and students should complete the laundry form accurately and should report any missing or damaged items immediately Students will not be asked to pay for laundry but items that are dry cleanedhandwashed or towels comforters and bed sheetsmattress protectors over and above the weekly allowance set by the school will be chargeable to parents

LEADERSHIP ROLES

There are many opportunities for students to take up leadership roles at KTJ These opportunities provide students with avenues to develop and enhance their organisational managerial and teamwork skills Students are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities to fully realise their talents and abilities These opportunities contribute significantly to the building of an impressive curriculum vitae and provide skills that will allow students to hold their own in our increasingly global community

LEGAL GUIDELINES

It is important for all our students to be aware of the civil legal requirements that are applicable in Malaysia This is especially so when they are out of the school We particularly advise all our international students to familiarise themselves with the following guidelines

1 Age of Criminal Responsibility

18 years If you are above 18 years old and found guilty in a court of law you will be sentenced as an adult If you are below 18 years old you can be fined placed in a reform school and expelled from the country among other punishments However in some cases you can still be sentenced like an adult

2 Age of Legal Smoking

18 years Smokers under the age of 18 can be fined up to RM1 000

3 Age to Enter Nightclubs Legally

21 years If you are under 21 years of age you will be detained and your parents guardians or houseparent will be called You will not be released until one of them comes to take you home If you are a Muslim certain Syariah laws may also apply

4 Age to Stay in Hotels

Depends on the hotels management You are advised to check with the hotels directly before making reservations

5 Illegal Drugs Illegal for all ages If you are caught taking or in possession of illegal drugs you can be fined placed in a reform school and expelled from the country among other punishments However in some cases you can still be sentenced like an adult

LIGHTNING SAFETY

Lightning safety is of paramount importance at KTJ Awareness of its dangers and knowledge of safety measures are necessary in order to minimise the risk All students parents members of staff and visitors must take note of the following guidelines When you hear Three long bursts of the siren Evacuate open areas immediately One short burst of the siren It is safe to be outdoors In between the two siren sounds If the schoolrsquos flashing lights are switched on it is not safe

to be outdoors Notes

It is advisable to seek shelter as soon as dark thunderclouds are observed Lightning can strike up to 20 kms from the edge of a thundercloud

As soon as thunder is heard seek shelter immediately Do not wait under a tree or inside a small unprotected wooden building Go inside a concrete building or a metal-roofed vehicle Keep well inside tall buildings at ground level If a safer shelter is not available stay away from high or open ground Find a safe drain and get into it to

avoid being the highest object around Squat with your feet close together and hands on knees Do not lie down on the ground or touch anyone nearby Do not touch metal objects Wet clothes increase the chances of survival in case of a lightning strike The danger period continues for about 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard

LOCKDOWN

A lockdown is necessary when students need to remain in their rooms due to any incident or threat such as a dangerous person(s) on the premises dangerous animal(s) on the premises missing child and the need to contain all students and staff major incident on our or at nearby premises

Upon hearing the alarm all students staff and visitors must get inside the nearest building as quickly as possible The door should then be locked Once inside a secure area staff and students should

go into your storeroom or under the desks if you do not have a storeroom in your classroom lock your doors stay away from doors and windows turn off lights and close blinds be aware of lines of sight if there is a window into the classroom consider covering it remain absolutely quiet teachers to take attendance no phone use unless necessary to communicate regarding the incident Phones should be shut off or put

on silent mode

If the lockdown alarm goes off outside lesson time ie break or lunchtime students should go to the nearest lockable area not back to their House or to the next classroom Staff members nearby will assist the students in getting into the nearest lockable area A lock-down is terminated by the Principal or in his absence a member of the SLT who will inform the Health and Safety Manager to switch off the alarm Students and staff must remain in rooms until a member of the schoolrsquos SLT who is on site advises them that the lockdown is over

PARENT PORTAL

At KTJ we recognise the importance of communicating our studentsrsquo progress with their parentsguardians to help students learn effectively and gain the most from their education The iSAMS Parent Portal is an efficient online tool that we use and it allows parentsguardians to keep up to date with their childrsquos school progress A username and password will be provided by the school via email and the Parent Portal can be accessed from the school website or at httpsktjparentsisamscloud The Parent Portal features include

Access to new and historical student school reports The ability to view student timetables and attendance The ability to view events and post notices to teachers The opportunity to view school fee information and to print past and present invoices The option to make changes to your contact information to update information on our iSAMS database

PASSPORTS AND VISAS

Overseas boarders are expected to hand their passports to their Houseparents for safekeeping upon arrival During outings students are advised to carry a copy of their passport for identification purposes by authorities

Student visa applications or renewals are arranged by the Registrarrsquos Office The procedure normally takes approximately four to six weeks to complete by the Malaysian Immigration Department Any renewednew passports need to have visas transferred to them from the old passport The passport must be valid for at least 12 months in order to apply for a new visa or for a visa renewal

RELIGIOUS WORSHIP

The school community respects all of its membersrsquo rights to practise their religion We also strive to develop our communityrsquos understanding of different faiths through a wide range of activities societies and ECAs We have an active Christian Fellowship and an Islamic Society these groups and others organise a number of school-wide events and activities annually On Fridays we have an extended lunch break and our Ustaz leads prayers in our Surau for our Muslim students On Sundays there are a number of options for students to visit local churches The school celebrates all major

SECURITY

The safety of the students is a top priority for KTJ The school has a Guard House situated at the main entrance where the school-employed guards will monitor the movements of everyone passing through The guards also patrol the campus on a regular basis day and night When leaving the school each student is given an official departure card or an official permission slip signed by the studentrsquos Houseparent or a House Tutor The student has to hand the card or slip in at the Guard House to be allowed to leave When parents or visitors wish to come to the school the respective Houseparent must first be informed of their arrival preferably 24 hours in advance so that they can inform the Guard House In the interest of safety parents and visitors who turn up without prior notification can expect to be held at the Guard House until their identification has been verified before being allowed in

SMOKING VAPING AND ALCOHOL

The school views these as serious breaches of conduct Students are informed that consuming or possessing alcohol or smokingvaping while they are at school on school trips or on school-sanctioned outings are strictly prohibited This includes Sixth Form day outings Clear step-by-step procedures are in place to deal with offenders The sanctions range from a loss of privileges to suspension from school for a period of time

SPORTS

Sports play a very important role at KTJ They are an essential component of the all-round education that the school espouses Active involvement is encouraged so that students maximise the benefits they can get from the various games on offer A wide range of sporting activities are available both in Physical Education classes and in Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) Some are organised for recreational purposes while others take on a more competitive approach The school squads have their own training slots and students are encouraged to attend participants will be identified in PE lessons or in the relevant ECAs (the selection sessions) Students who join part-way through a term or those who have not automatically been selected can make their interests known to the Head of Physical Education who can assess their abilities It is compulsory for each student to choose at least one sporting activity a week (two for Forms 1 amp 2) but they can choose many more Sports sessions - Monday to Friday (except Wednesday)

KTJrsquos Student Support Services team includes teachers who help with English as an Additional Language (EAL) Learning Support and Counselling The Student Support Services Team recognises and values differences in individuals believing that when students develop a sense of respect for and take pride in their uniqueness they are able to make wise choices regarding their individual paths to success develop their full potential and maximise their own abilities and learning Counselling is offered as an integral part of the schoolrsquos pastoral care system The service aims to offer studentsrsquo support with their academic social and personal lives Counselling can help with any new ongoing or intermittent issues that may impact upon the studentsrsquo lives and studies Counselling is a safe confidential space where a student may go to talk about whatever it is that is troubling him or her Counselling more specifically may be about making choices coping with change gaining insight and understanding growing as a person adapting to transitions improving relationships resolving problems or discussing developmental issues The role of Learning Support is to provide students with the skills and techniques required to overcome challenges which may be preventing them from accessing the curriculum to the best of their abilities Learning support may take on various forms depending on the needs of each individual student
